Memorial for Sandy ( Zooke ) chosen.

NOTE: The message immediately below superceeds the rest of this post.

Ok, here's the particulars of how to contribute to the Zooke Breast Cancer Research Memorial Fund:

1. Visit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation's Website at http://www.bcrfcure.org/sup_howyoucan.html ( which is the "How to donate page." )

2. Decide what method you want to use to donate. As far as I know at this point, they accept personal checks and international money orders, in addition to all the usual methods of donating: credit cards ( not sure about debit cards ), USPS money orders, etc.

3. To make sure that they know your contribution is in Sandy's ( Zooke's ) memory, write "In memory of Zooke" on your check or money order, or just tell them if you make your donation by phone.

NOTE: "When you make a donation online, after filling out your information on the first screen, you will have the opportunity to make a donation in memory or in honor of a loved one, and you will be able to request that we send an acknowledgment of this gift to whomever you designate." [ From their Website ]

Do NOT request that an acknowledgement of your gift be sent to anyone on NS, including me! The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has graciously agreed to compile a total and let us know what it is.

If you have questions/problems you can either let me know or call them direct, toll-free at 1-866-FIND-A-CURE (346-3228). For those who live outside the US, just let me know and I'll ask them.

Please keep in mind that all contributions are welcome, that this is a very worthy and important cause, and that any contributions we make will be in loving memory of a very wonderful woman. Our little contribution could be enough to put some researcher on the right track to beat this terrible disease.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The results of our poll are final now: the option of contributing to some sort of breast cancer research has been selected.

NOTE: Do NOT send any contributions until this is all finalized!

Here's one organization I think meets all the necessary criteria: The Breast Cancer Foundation (http://www.bcrfcure.org/).

The criteria I used:

* Better than 80% of all contributions go directly to breast cancer research.

* Endorsed by known, prestigious organizations/people.

* Run by those who are either involved directly in breast cancer research, or by survivors of breast cancer, or both.

* Ongoing programs and in existence for a year or longer.

* Relatively small paid staff.

Please take a moment and let me know what you think. Without strenuous objections to this organization it will be the one to which we will send contributions in our Zooke's memory.

I have taken the liberty of calling them to ask a few questions. They can accept Visa, MasterCard and America Express credit cards, and will accept a check or money order as well ( they cannot accept debit cards ). They can also send us a total amount for all our contributions so that we can say, "Hey! The people at NS General donated X amount of money as a memorial to Zooke!"

Please let me know here what you think so we can get the ball rolling on this memorial for Sandy ( Zooke ).

NOTE: Do NOT send any contributions until this is all finalized!

I loved her. It's the very least I can do. Thank you.

I'll post all the particulars as soon as everyone has had a chance to check out the proposed organization.

You would have to contact them directly and ask. They don't subscribe to PayPal, so it might get a bit iffy, but there might be a way. They have an 800 number: 1-800-346-3228.

Keep me posted. If we can't find one way, we'll find another. I would hate for anyone who truly wanted to contribute to Zooke's memorial to be unable to do so. If push comes to shove, you could transfer your contribution to my paypall account and I could include it in my own, but I'd rather not do that, for obvious reasons.

The only way I could really donate anything is via. Paypal...

Otherwise I would probably be slugged a lot of fees, since it is a US based charity.

'mmm, I think international ones cost a fair bit, though (since it'll have to be in US dollars as well, and there is pretty much always a conversion fee. maybe not though, i've never sent one.).

Perhaps I can donate to a local charity of a similar nature instead. I'll figure out something.

Since The Breast Cancer Foundation ( should there be no strenuous objection ) has indicated that they will compile a total for us, there's really no reason for running the individual contributions through a middle-man. The reasons for not using a middle-man:

* There are no good mechanisms for doing so without questions/concerns arrising.

* It makes the entire process unnecessarily lengthy.

* It means that contributions will not be anonymous.

* I personally do not want to be placed in that position.

Tomorrow, or as soon as is feasibly possible, I will post detailed instructions on how contributions can be made, the address to where they can be made, etc. The instructions will include a short statement to be included with your contribution, so that The Cancer Research Foundation will know they came from an NS General member. They will let us know, after a reasonable time, what the total of contributions from NS General members was, and I will post it here.

For those who cannot send a check or use a credit card, we can work out some other method.

Is this acceptable?

I think this is the best method. It keeps it simple and safe with no possibility of "questions" coming up. You are doing a wonderful job on this. Thanks!
Can I suggest that we do a memorial sevice here on NationStates sometime soon.

Those in Sweden who want to avoid the hassle in donating to a US charity, and want a more flexible form of payment open directly to one's Internet bank, can donate to Rosa Bandet. (http://www.rosabandet.se/) It is a breast cancer charity that is part of the Swedish Cancerfonden (http://www.cancerfonden.se/), and they fulfil all the requirements that Eutrusca mentioned. They also fulfil all the requirements for a "90 account (90-konto)" which means that they meet Swedish government standards on the percentage of each donation that goes to the cause championed.

Yes, but one has to create a "group" on the site and those who want to donate to it have to join (it ends up looking like this (http://www.rosabandet.se/Templates/RosaBandet2005/CampaignPage.aspx?id=492)), making the procedure somewhat messy. Seeing as the Swedish community on NS is quite small indeed, I don't know if it would be worth the effort. :\

Ok. Then I suppose that will have to do. I just think it would be highly informative to see how much we as a group donate. :)

I really do appreciate it muchly, but I honestly don't need or expect any thanks. So enough of this thanking me. I'm doing it because I loved her, because she was a truly kind and gentle soul, and because she loved all of us. If you loved Zooke, or even just liked her a bit, and if you appreciate the effort, donate to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation when we get everything arranged.

Just think ... what if it's our little bit that helps some young, dynamic researcher with new ideas find the final cure for this dispicable illness and saves countless women from heartbreak, pain and/or death? That would be the very best memorial for our Zooke that I can possibly imagine! :)

Here's the text of an email I sent to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation:

We have selected your organization as the one to which we want to send our contributions as a memorial to Sandy, whose nickname in our group was "Zooke."

As I mentioned in our telephone conversation, we are an international group of role-players and general discussion group participants.

You can see the sort of role-playing we do here: http://www.nationstates.net/eutrusca

This is the General Forum where I have kept everyone up to date on what we are trying to do for our deceased friend: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=1227

As I also mentioned, we would appreciate your compiling all the individual contributions to Sandy's memorial so that we could have an approximate total.

We have a few questions: a number of our members are international ( not residing in the US ) and do not have a credit card. What is the best way for them to contribute? International money order? Do you accept checks drawn on foreign banks?

Thank you for your help with this, and thank you for working for an organization which addresses such a great need.

Of course there are, but anything from 26 and on is the "end of the month." Two days here or there will hardly make a difference, and if they will, you've already lost large parts of Europe where they tend to be paid around the 25th or 27th.

I was finally able to make my donation to the BCRF. I had to wait until after the end of the month because that's when my military disablity check comes in. If you've not yet made your contribution and can afford to do so, please make it as soon as possible so the BCRF can send us a total of all the contributions from NS people.

If you've already made your donation, thank you, thank you, thank you! May God or the universe simle kindly upon you for having done this in memory of a wonderful woman.

Zooke, wherever you are now precious lady, I know you're smiling to realize how much you were loved. Rest in peace, darlin' girl, and know that I'm still dancing in the rain, just like you taught me.

Thank you, PM. You realize that she loved you, yes? :)

For those of you who have yet to contribute, here's a copy of the email I got after I made mine [ personal information deleated ]:

Mr. Forrest Horn
Kernersville, NC 27284

Dear Mr. Horn:

On behalf of Evelyn Lauder and our entire organization, I would like to thank you for your thoughtful contribution of ______ to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in memory of Zooke .

Our investment in the most brilliant minds in breast cancer research is moving us ever closer to our objective of prevention and a cure. Three important new advances in breast cancer treatment recommendations, all announced in May 2005, were made possible by research funds from BCRF. Two of these are new developments in the use of Herceptin and Avastin in breast cancer treatment, represent targeted therapies – drugs that attack tumors directly, often without the side effects of normal chemotherapy. The third is demonstration through a long-term trial that a low-fat diet can decrease the chances of cancer recurrence. These advances will radically improve breast cancer treatment and prevention and save the lives of thousands of women and men. We are proud to have contributed significantly to these life-changing research developments but we know our journey to a cure is not yet over.

This year, we have strengthened our efforts to fund research that produces results. We raised a record-breaking $25.5 million that is supporting the work of 110 researchers worldwide in 2005-2006, as we continue to receive the highest ratings from charity evaluators including Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy. In December of 2004, Money magazine named BCRF one of America’s top eight charities. We are proud to be recognized for providing our donors a direct line to the very best clinical and genetic research.

None of this would be possible without your steadfast support. We thank you for believing in BCRF and in the promise of a world without breast cancer.

Sincerely,

Myra J. Biblowit
President

Perhaps she is, but I suspect she would be more concerned with the effect not donating when they have the means to do so would have on them than anything else. :)

I'll call TBCF tomorrow and check. It may still be a bit premature though.

Though I'm in the UK, and it might prove difficult to contact and donate, I'll find a way. I donate to Cancer Research monthly anyway, so I'm used to donating...I'll give anything that I can. :)

One problem would be the actually donation, as I'm in the UK. However, I could donate to a specific breast cancer charity here in the UK, if that would be easier- I give £10 a month to cancer research as a whole, but I can donate some more to the breast cancer charity. It'd be an honor. :)

And you're a good man for doing this, Eutrusca. *pats on the shoulder*

haha...yeah, she would have loved it. I think she might have enjoyed the outpouring of love and fluffles they've created as much as their relationship.

As for why I'm mad at the world, I was walking with some friends last night and saw some muslim guy getting harassed by three guys...so I told my friends I was gonna go walk with the muslim guy and make sure he was alright and they could come if they wanted. So I did and one of my friends came, let the muslim guy know we were friends, not coming to harass him some more...the other guys backed off when they saw that they were no longer more in power. I then got a lecture from my friends about how I put myself in danger. They didn't seem to understand that if I hadn't done something, then I was responsible for whatever happened to that guy, and that if something had happened to me, it would be their fault.

I like to think our little Zooke would have been backing me up. And that is enough to make all the problems worth while.

Made it back home this afternoon to see if I had any ice damage here at the house. All is A-OK. Living and working in Mississippi in the hurricane area. More work than you can shake a stick at down there. The mutts and I are living in a cabin in some of my families deer woods. We've settled into a new routine and are basically happy except for not having Sandy chirping around and organizing everything. I swarmy that woman could organize a herd of cats. I know what you mean Forrest. I go along just fine for several hours then there she pops up in my thoughts and it all goes to hell. It will get better. Sarkhaan you may not know this but she spent several months last year taking up for some Muslim friends we have here who were having legal problems. One of them ended up getting shipped back to Kashmire about a month before the quake destroyed his town Muzafabadd (not sure about the spelling) and killed and injured some of his family. She managed to raise a several thousand dollars to send to him and he has all of his family in real houses and is helping house others. I bet she was walking right along with you and probably flipping the bird to the assholes. If PM is Pure Metal I know she was really taken with that kid. She worried herself silly over him and got tickled as hell whenever he had good news. She would be so excited to see him happy. Maybe shes walking with him too. Sandy ( Zooke ) had been fighting cancer for some time and seemed to be gaining on it. However, she had a heart attack shortly after a little dog she had for 18 years had to be put to sleep. We suspect it was a combination of the chemotherepy and a previously undiagnosed heart condition.

I still miss her ... a lot!

I generally don't donate to cancer funds because there's better ways to save lives. Giving $100 to some breast cancer research fund is going to go a short way towards a project that is going to take decades and millions of dollars to complete, while donating the same ammount to some third-world charity helping to prevent easily curable diseases will save many more lives.

( shrug ) Your choice. But since Zooke died of complications from breast cancer, perhaps that was a fitting memorial for her.

No. They would only give me an approximation. Sorry.

BTW ... they sent me a survey about their organization and Website. I gave them very high ratings, but doing the survey brought back all of the sad feelings I had when Zooke died. This time, I changed the memories to kind and funny things she said and did. Helped a bit, so I must be getting over grieving for her.

mm i wasn't sure whether to post that or not cos i didn't want to dredge up feelings that might have subsided by now. sorry :-S

but that's a shame... we know it was over 2k USD, so thats still impressive :) (and may well be more by now - hence my asking)

No, all those who were going to contribute had done so after about a week, apparently. Nothing since then.

BTW ... it was the survey that brought back the feelings, not you, dude. Now I see one of the reasons why Glitziness is ga-ga over you: you have a good heart. ( I knew that, but just hadda say it! ) :D

don't worry about not being able to throw any in. Eut threw in a general donation, as did I to a few different groups.

I don't know if you were around when Zooke was with us, but no one was as sweet as she was.

this thread was a charity drive in her honor, and very much in her spirit. Her memorial thread was moved over to the archives, and those of us who were so inclined said our part over there. Sandy wouldn't want us mouring her endlessly. She'd much rather we go out and dance in the rain.

However, if you do have something that you'd like to say about her, you are always more than welcome to
