Kayla started to go a little red when she finally caught on that she had gone to the wrong person and area. She was looking to find the Chancellor like the Assistant had asked, however she had gone to the Presidents office. Following the Aide. she shrugged off the embassassment and continued, at least she hadn't made a complete fool of herself.

"Yes, I was hoping to see the Chancellor to offer my condolances and find out who it would be best to speak to..." Kayla sighed, bringing her hand up to her head looking a little stressed. "I don't know, I suppose I'm a little pre-occupied, I won't let it effect my judgement again." Kayla stopped short of explaining any further, the death of Elisa Day* brought mixed emotions to mind, the woman who opened her eyes to possibilities she had never before imagined now dead as part of the troubles in the GMC protectorate.

Instantly Kayla put it in the back of her mind, returning to the simply beauty of professionalism, getting lost in her work to drown out her emotions until later.

Footnote: * I'm assuming this thread is prior to the press conference made by Elisa Day which confirms she never actually died.

Aurora von Konigsmark rose from her desk and warmly bowed to Kayla. "Hello Ambassador. I don't think we've met in private yet. Would you care for some refreshments?" she nodded to her assistant.
The Foreign Minister's Volksraad office was small but cozy, and in fact most of the information that Kayla could visibly see was regarding the constituency, voting schedules and maps showing voting tendencies in various parts of Lavenrunz' major cities and provinces.

Gregory watched the news from Lavenrunz on satellite TV and when the story of the Neptune's Daughter came and went he turned off the TV. Sitting down and back in his chair he slouched slightly. "So are we an international joke or what?" Bill Mitchser shrugged his shoulders abit and took a seat across from the massive oak desk leaning forward to rest his elbow on it and then his head. "I dont know Greg..we havent recieved any word back from the Lavenruzians."

"So we dont even know if the Archduchess will respond to it or not?" Greg ask slightly annoyed now.

"So far no acceptance of the apology..but it kinda made the news..and I think it even made the front page of some of their local papers. If anything it at least means your a romantic eligable batchelor..if Sophia doesnt want you their are plenty other female dignitaries in the sea." Mitchser sat back in the seat and turned the TV back on with the remote. "So far we'll wait and see..the Captain of the ND has said no one from the Lavenruzian government has even ask if he had any other message for the Archduchess. We told him to sit tight in Zwoll and wait. Want me to hire a messager through our contacts in Hofburg?"

Gregory thought about the idea for a few moments before waving his hand at the idea. "Not just yet. We'll wait alittle bit."

"I have a short statement to make. It is true that King Gregory and I had a brief and awkward courtship. It is true that I left in exasperation, but I have to give this to him: he is a man who knows how to apologize in a big way. And it is accepted. My response is to say that I am, at this stage of things, open to suggestions. No further comment."

To: Empress Aurora von Sachshausen

From: Foreign Minister Paul Stahlecker

Imperial Majesty,

If it so suits you, we should like to begin sending the ten million barrels of oil, for free, as promised, to your nation... They will arrive on a Mississippian super tanker, if this is deemed appropriate and approved by your most wise judgement. We would also like to thank you for the opportunity to deal with your nation.

I would consider personally overseeing the delivery of the oil and subsequent negotiations for future oil shipments and sales, were it not for the recent passing of my father, whose funeral I will be attending in South Africa in several days.

Although after the funeral, if you require my presence at any negotiations, I will attend.

I hope this letter finds you in good health.

Sincerely,

Paul Stahlecker, Foreign Minister of the Mississippian Federation

Kayla returned the bow to the Foriegn Minister and relaxed a little, her face no longer a little red from her previous mistake.

"Greetings, Foriegn Minister. I hope I'm not interupting anything." Kayla replied, glancing around the room. She then turned to the assistant. "Just a glass of water place, thanks."

Kayla took the glass of water offered and had a sip before continuing on to business, the room gave Kayla the impression of a busy workplace as though Aurora could work her comfortable for hours on end.

"I came up here to speak to you about the possibility of an Embassy exchange between our two nations, so far we've been rather busy intergrating our network with the others on Unity Island, however we've not had a chance to arrange such an exchange with Lavenrunz yet, despite our enterance into the NDA."

Many of the crew could answer honestly they didnt know the answers to the questions, restriction of information and secrecy were common place. The XO gave no information but her name and rank, but the captain tried to answer as best as he could.

What were you doing in Lavenrunzian waters?
"We went off track due to a massive systems failure, we strayed into your waters by accident."

What did you jettison before you surfaced?
"In a attempt to surface, we were forced to jettison supplies. It was a matter of crew saftey"

Why did you destroy your submarine?
"That was my choice as captain. after your unprovocated attack I had to make a quick decision. Perhaps I was over hastly" He looked around the room "or perhaps i wasnt"

Are there any Iesus Christian personnel among you?
"No. but I am unaware of the full lineage of my crew members. Perhaps some have Iesus ethnic background"

What were your orders?
"Standard patrol. That is all I can tell you, and retain my honor"

Why did you come so close to the shore and then retreat out to see?
"As I said we had a massive systems failure. Once we knew our location, we tried to withdrawl at best speed"

Why did you ignore orders to surface?
"Our communications systems were also down, and again for the record, I would like to protest the fact we are being treated like criminals"

"no reply?"
A very frightened courtier nodded his head "no sultan. She has not replied to the request, from she whom is adored by heaven"
Rolling her eyes, very indecent thoughts flicked across her mind. "those people seem determined to make us enemies. The clerics will love finding this out."

The stout security guard said, "That way and turn right, then there are several, Ma'am, which also include a couple of privacy booths. Hey, you kids! No spitting on the floor!"
Someone blew a horn right near Lenore's ear, while a pair of young women wearing little more than shorts, neon pasties and body paint raced by shrieking excitedly.
"Madhouse." muttered the guard.

She thanked the guard and begun to walk towards the booth. She never saw if the beer pint was thrown on purpose or if it was accidentially dropped from the seats upstairs. Actually she never saw it at all, she was just minding her steps in the stairs down towards the phone booth when everything turned lightning bright and then black. She slumped to the floor and a pool of blood begun to form around her head encircling the pint glass that had survived thanks to having its fall cushioned by Lenore.

The officer interrogating the Captain looked amused. "Treated like criminals? Well, let's see...clearly we tried to communicate with you, and you tried to run. You went close to our shore, you acted in an entirely suspicious manner. Of course, we expect you to say these things, Captain. However, I can assure you that you are being treated no differently from personnel captured in conflict, for instance. Believe me, if you were being treated like criminals, you would find we would have no compunction about using drugs or torture to obtain your confession." he laughed quietly. "Anyway, you are going to all be sent home in a couple of days."

Meanwhile, at the hospital, the bodies of the commandos were examined to see if there was anything to distinguish their nationality or their service.

Dear Sultan Hatusu

I am glad to hear from you. To be honest, I felt awkward about sending a letter till I knew the facts of the matter. Your submarine seems to have had a lot of technical difficulties. You might want to look at getting some better ones, or crews that do you more credit. They couldn't even get a simple radio working on their boat!
At any rate, we are sending them back to you.
I agree that we don't talk enough, but frankly when the Reich leaders so often do an about face on policies regarding Lavenrunz we have become a bit wary. If you would like to discuss other matters in future please do not hesitate to contact me.

"Oh God, did you see that?" a young woman exclaimed.
"Creep, I'll teach you to throw things at women!" cried a burly young man, grabbing a protesting goof in a stag hat which had fallen over one eye, saying, "I was throwing it at the wall...and that damn foreigner got in the way!"
The young woman knelt by Lenore and bit her lip in chagrin to see the huge swelling lump and that she was totally unconscious. "Hey, you idiots, stop brawling and call an ambulance!" she cried.

Gregory watched the press conference and raised his hand to his chin. Replaying it once more he smiled abit and nodded his head slightly to himself. So far so good in his mind and as he picked up the phone he knew exactly how to take it next...

Harley Earl was an NYNJ expatriot living in Hofburg. A tall fellow he was an ex-OSS officer and dealed in missing and abducted individuals. On ocassion he'd do an odd job for the embassy whenever they needed to find a fellow citizen in Hofburg and the home government didnt wish to go through proper channels. This was though most certainly an odd job in the sense of the word odd. Harley was being asked to track down a citizen of Lavenrunz. And not just any citizen, but an Archduchess and heiress to the throne. This was to say the least something he hadnt expected to be doing. However he kept up with the news, and the pay was decent enough to accept the job. The embassy had iven him a Black Spartan creditcard with a limit of 400,000 federal dollars to squander. However he was under a contractual obligation to do his job..otherwise he'd be impressed into working in the embassies kitchen staff till his debt was paid.

And what nagged him the most..he was under a week time limit. So purchasing a new vehicle for himself, paying off his bills and getting some comfortable winter clothes, Harley was quickly on his way toward where the Press Conference had taken place. It was the best place to start looking for the Archduchess.

Down in Zwoll, the Neptune's Daughter had gathered a small hint of fame from this entire process and because of people flocking to see the romantic gesture in port the Captain decided to keep the ship in harbor for another day. They'd eventually raise anchor and head out to sea to dump the dying flowers in the ocean but for now with the flowers still rather fresh looking there was no real need to hurry out of port.

Aerigian Ambassador Karen McCauley sighed as the commotion continued around her. Workers were busy moving furniture into the consulate compound, and were busy furnishing the office next door.

While she was trying to compile a report to the President...

"....officials are holding a North Star submarine..." the TV news cast announced.

She listened as the news report continued regarding the latest tensions with The Reich, as well as the ongoing Syskeyian conflict...

Pretty similar to her report, the President might now have information on the situation, but what will the country do? She herself isnt quite sure if The Federal Republic was ready to jump onto any conflicts on the international stage. Then again, there was always the whole issue of the Ineptian Prime Minister calling Iesus Christi "a friend" of his nation. Quite strange coming from a Heartland neighbour. She knows that President Yang has personally called Schtoopstadt to ask for clarification.

Sending the report electronically back to Aerigia, Karen closed the screen on her laptop, she better get some rest. They have a trade meeting with the Lavenrunzian Agricultural Committee tomorrow about beef exports.

"Well. The fact that we weren't taken in combat seems to have little impact on your actions. God help others who may require your aid." The captain tried to keep his growing disgust from his voice. "and I do not doubt you, and what you say about torture. I always hoped to meet a lavenrunzer, and hear him dispel the myths about their nation. Sadly it appears there are no myths to dispel. my crew and I have nothing else to say."

I will take your advice, clearly the equipment needs upgrading. Isn't it a shame my soldiers cannot conduct themselves with the same honor and dignity, your men do. How is Count Mirbach?
I am glad to talk whenever possible, surely we can avoid much bloodshed. Of course the ebb and flow of lavenrunz whims always makes this hard. Schizophrenic approaches to state affairs are hardly our sole dominion.
Still I hold great ideals, and I don’t wish to see random words destroy them.
I remain hopeful.

Sent to the Lavenrunzian Foreign Ministry:

A videotape of the Czarina making her apology to the people of Lavenrunz, the Empress, and any else offended by recent incidents and remarks from Mississippi.

A letter was enclosed, “Please broadcast this to your people so that they may see firsthand our sincere regret over recent occurrences.”

The tape began, the Czarina was sitting down in a red armchair, a painting of the female personification of Mississippi, was in the background, the flowing blonde hair and innocent and sweet blue eyes were a stark contrast to the ominous storm clouds painted in the background of the painting, a sign that Mississippi always had to be on guard and folks ought to be ready to protect her.

It was rather odd, Mississippi was always referred to as a “he” put was always painted as a female and personified as such. It made sense if you analyzed it from the fact that most in Mississippi considered women more in need of defending than men, besides, a female representing the nation seemed more aesthetically pleasing than a male.

Alice finally, after several seconds of silence, spoke. “People of Lavenrunz, hear this message, I beseech you. I speak to you as one who is admitting grave wrongs having been perpetrated against your national honor, and one who wishes to most humble beg your forgiveness.”

She took a deep breath before continuing, “Recent events that have occurred in the Western Sahara, have been regrettable at best, and atrocious and rotten at worst. I am personally overseeing the investigation into this matter and I can assure you that it will be dealt with in a manner that is timely and fair to all parties involved. Rest assured, the matter will be handled and will not simply be ignored and left to be forgotten.”

The Czarina then decided to address another matter, concealing a frown as she uneasily spoke, “As for Joseph Mladic and his baseless, false, and totally uncalled for remarks and accusations about your nation, your national religion, and your empress… I have canceled his program for the next few weeks, pending the Czar’s review of what Mr. Mladic said and the Czar’s final decision on the matter. At the very least, he will be chastised and closely monitored in the future, and he will, if permitted, be making a trip to Lavenrunz to personally apologize to the public in the center of Hofburg. If he refuses to go, not only will he be punished, but also I will, if permitted, personally make the apology on his behalf. His remarks were disgraceful and totally uncalled for. Your empress is a living testament to Christian morality and virtue, and indeed our Foreign Minister, Paul Stahlecker, has reported that Lavenrunz is a land that values Christian morality and holds virtue in the highest regard. Thus the horrible accusations of Mr. Mladic cannot be allowed to go unpunished, although right now, with this very broadcast, I am assuring they are not going unanswered."

Alice’s expression changed to a slight pleasant smile, happy to be ending this tape on a good note, as she said, “And finally, the matter of the much promised oil. As we speak, Mississippian KC-10As are transporting the first portion of the promised 10 million barrels of oil to Lavenrunz, and they will be entering Lavenrunzian airspace once permission is given… We are a nation that sticks to our word, and it is an honor to deal with such noble and upright people as the Lavenrunzians have shown themselves to be. Good night, and God Bless.”

Ooc- Each KC-10A can carry about 1300 barrels worth of oil (going purely by weight, a 55 gallon drum weighing about 440 pounds when full) Thus we will be sending 1,000 planes on about 8 roundtrips, to deliver the promised oil.

She was lying in a boat on a river watching the water dancing and sparkling in front of her eyes. A man was talking to her, or was it a woman? , in a slow guttural voice ín a language that she couldn't place but she still understood.

Slowly everything turned and she saw the city of her childhood, burning after the orbital bombardment, people screaming and running with faces contorted in pain. In a corner a small girl hugged a dead woman, still bleeding and still warm. Lenore recognised that girl, she knew her!. A man came running and picked up the girl, saying something about to let go. She knew who that girl was´, it was her! Everything swirled and she watched as the sky turned green and then slowly red. The red mist seemed to embrace her and she felt warm and comfortable.

She saw a light in the distance and the light called to her. It was a friendly light but it still scared her so she tried to run away from it but her legs seemed to be weak and have no power. She felt the ground underneath her feet turn into dough and suck up the power of each step. The light came closer and she tried to scream but no sound came from her mouth.

The interrogator looked at the Captain with narrowed eyes. "Take him away." he said thoughtfully. The marines marched him out.
What the Captain did not know was this: Empress Aurora was enraged by Sultan Hatusu's note and had changed her mind.
"Schizophrenic this, you stupid arab bitch." she had muttered, shocking her courtiers, and further shocking them by instructing Baron Shein to use all means necessary to get the North Star scum to talk.
In the Captain's case, having him tossed into an oubliette in which he could barely do more than crouch was the start of things. He was first "softened up" with the skillful aid of batons and boots.

Harly Earl found himself on a plane heading for southern Lavenrunz. The soft rolling country of the central area gave way to largely mountainous territory, sometimes with high valleys with some small pine forests. He was bound for a rather exclusive ski resort. Among those travelling with him on the small plane were a few journalists, who were mostly tapping away on laptops or chattering on mobile phones.

Empress Aurora replied to Mississippi in a public broadcast:
"To Czarina Alice Fabus
Your gracious apology is welcomed. It would be a shame for our nations to have poor relations so early in our mutual histories. We gladly accept the offer of friendship and of the oil resources. Your planes will be cleared to land in Zwoll, and your people received as friends.
You have our thanks and are in our prayers."

As soon as permission was granted for the planes to cross into the Lavenrunzian airspace, they did so. The first of the KC-10As began their descent as they were rapidly approaching their destination. It seemed that the local weather was rather un-Mississippian, they weren't used to such cold temperatures. But then again, they were not in Mississippi, they were in Lavenrunz, a land known for snow.

One of the pilots in the lead KC-10A radioed in as he was touching down on one of the designated runways, "We're here... Now what?"

Aurora von Konigsmark smiled, and said, "Yes, Ambassador, an exchange of embassies would be most welcome. But you know, we haven't had much contact outside of the NDA matters, your nation and ours, and it would be beneficial if perhaps we also exchanged some cultural information. For instance, I've noticed that you seem, if you'll pardon me, somewhat hesitant about our form of government...could you tell me if that is true, and what you are used to?

Meanwhile, Ambassador McCauley received two gorgeously attired equerries bearing a basket of flowers, which were white and yellow roses, and a statement of welcome from the Empress written on cream coloured paper in golden ink. One of the equerries, who was wearing the crimson, blue and gold uniform of the Imperial Mirenburg Hussars, said respectfully, "Ambassador, I also convey from the Court that anything you require, do not hesitate to inform us."

And in a hospital, in her delirium, Lenore might have seen the worried faces of the doctors over her thrust aside by a man with a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses, who looked at her expressionlessly, and then went away.

Beyond the airport, which was large, they could see a big city. There was a faint smell of the sea. From the air they had seen many factories beyond the borders of the airport itself.

The most white crewman had long been mentally preparing himself for what he was sure would happen. His arabic was almost totally perfect.

Harley Earl climbed off the aircraft when the plane landed and as quickly as he got off, he was quicker in picking up his luggage. Mount Vanaheim was a cold place..then again ski resorted werent exactly warm. With luggage in one arm he moved out of the jet set airport..having seen more of the local celebreties then he'd ever figure he'd see before or again. Well everything hinged on whether or not he got a message to the Archduchess. Raising his left arm once he got out to the curb he picked up a taxi and went to the most expensive of the nearby resorts.

If it was one thing he knew about the royalty in this nation is that they spared little expense on luxury. So he'd start big and work his way small. It didnt seem so hard. This kind of town was expensive enough to only have several celebretry catering resorts and the rest would obviously be for the bumpkins who vacationed in the area. Not concerned he knew he'd find her eventually. The thing that concerned him though would he be able to relay the message in the some five days he had left in his contractual obligation.

Her interrogator, a cold eyed man with short hair that seemed a fine fuzz on his skull, nodded to the two burly goons who forced her into it and locked her ankles and wrists into place.
Then her mouth was forced open by means of straps and a skullcap.
Meanwhile, a man in a white lab coat arrived with a humming apparatus which happened to have a coiled device rather like a dentist's drill, save that it was pronged and smooth at the end.
"Electricity breaks everyone down." said the interrogator. "Now. Make a single aaah sound if you wish to confess."

Mount Vanaheim, Lavenrunz

"Taxi Sir? Taxi?"
The taxis up in the mountainous ski resort town were actually like hackney cabs except they were sturdier and pulled by pairs of shaggy stocky ponies, heavily bundled drivers shouting in English at Harley competing for his business. He saw a cheerful, rosey cheeked young couple get into one, the driver closing the door behind them with a fluorish, hopping up onto the seat and lashing the reins so that the ponies trundled off up the road towards the palatial resort.

RE: Current Situation
TX:

Empress,

Ah, I wasn't entirely sure the extent and nature of your need, and figured monetary considerations would be a good place to start. However, we are more than willing to help with your IT infrastructure. I like to think that our reputation speaks for itself, so I will simply mention that we will be willing to help in any way you need; be it telecommunications upgrades, server upgrades, training programs, or workshops. I am more than willing to send consultants, free of charge, to help your various corporations streamline and improve their profit margin.

I am also willing to offer the young citizens of your nation up to five thousand grants for further education in the Hack at our premier technological and engineering universities. These grants will pay for transportation, room and board, books, tuition, as well as a modest monthy stipend for miscellaneous expenses. The only stipulation for the grants is that they complete their education and return to Lavenrunz to help improve your nation. This way, you will have a solid base of professionals to help your country in its march towards the future. We can work out how many years these grants will be available later, but I'm thinking for about five years.

Also, there is nothing naive about your outlook. Improving the ability to raise capital is one of the best ways to improve the nation, which is why I'm so willing to help. "Teach a man to fish..." and all.

I am enjoying my life, aside from the occation assassination attempt. Luckily that is behind me, and things are going wonderfully well. I wish you all the best, and look forward to visiting.

End Message

This is the letter sent officially.

To her Excellency, Speaker for the Oligarchy Elisa Day

I can scarcely convey my gratitude for this generous offer. Education certainly is the key to moving forward, for information is power.
If possible, I would like you to give me a list of your educational facilities and send a comprehensive report on how the consultancy matter would work.
In turn, I am going to make sure that the Education Minister sends you a report on the current state of our universities and polytechnical colleges as well as the military academies so that we can have some basis for comparison.

With the greatest affection
Aurora von Sachshausen
Empress of Lavenrunz

Aurora had always been the least lofty of Joanna's children, and had never suspected that she would rule. So she was sometimes embarassed to have to be instructed in the smallest details of writing official letters. For instance, learning to write "the consultancy matter" rather than, "This consultancy thing".

Meanwhile, Helga Dresden met with key members of the CPL's Central Secretariat to plan to meet the envoy from Constantinopolis. It was decided that they must play The Internationale and have a group of schoolchildren meet the august foreigner. In addition, they would travel through an ordinary neighborhood and not avoid the people. Helga (who was no fool) had already picked the neighborhood, making sure that it was one which was full of CPL supporters, mostly disgruntled out of work factory families who were eager to see some change for the better--for grim practical reasons of survival.

Yasmina spat, stared into the goons eyes and quietly spoke “Lieutenant Commander Yasmina Durrani. Serial Number 75826”
A sharp agonizing pain jolted through her body, taking her breath
away. She looked up; her green eyes filled with pain, and the desire to live. Again the jolt came, longer this time, her body arched as the power ran through her, and at that moment she would have done anything to make the pain stop. She screamed till her lungs felt like they would burst. At last her tormentors turned the power down, she mumbled incoherently until finally she found the words. “O God of love, who gave us a commandment that we should love one another*”

I have received no word of Captain Farid, and the crew of the IRV A'ishah. I am saddened to come to the conclusion you intend to hold them indefinitaly, and treat them as your whim desires.
I therefore ask, in whatever spirit of peace remains within our relationship, that you do not go down the road that would lead to further dishonor and tensions between us.
We do not need to add further fuel to the already inflamed relationship between us, what good further hate? I am not my husband; do not assume anything of the past.I hold the life of my soldiers and their treatment as sacred, they live and die on my word, they are my children.
You hold a unique chance here .for good or for ill, the power is in your hands. I simply beg you treat those men, as you yourself would want be treated. Treat them as if they were you own.

Do you really expect me to believe that nothing was working at all on your submarine? That none of the radios were working, that you could not surface or even tap out morse code with a hammer on the hull? Moreoever, why can't you actually tell us what kind of accident or misfortune happened?" he shook his head. "The most annoying thing about this is how unprofessional it is. Now: I'm going to ask you again. What was your mission on the coast?" he benignly held up the instrument, waiting.

I am preparing to send the crew back, of course, and they are, I can assure you, being well treated. It is just a matter of doing it properly.
To be perfectly blunt, you did not begin well by mentioning the man accused of my mother's murder and who attempted to puppetize me. Nor is insulting our manner of government wise.
I am not my mother any more than you are your husband. I am not someone to play games with. If you would like to have a serious discussion I will welcome it, but do not play with me and suggest that sending spies into my country in this clumsy manner will be taken lightly.

Aurora shook her head, glancing up at her secretary. "Who is she kidding? She lands commandos who have poison pills in their teeth and she yatters on about friendship and such? How can you possibly understand these people?"
Baron Ehrfurt shrugged eloquently. "It is impossible to fathom the Reich nations, Majesty. Many have tried, none have succeeded."

Empress Aurora
I await the return of my children, and am eager to find out exactly what ‘doing it properly’ means in Lavenrunz.
I have never intended to insult, just replied in kind to your remarks about the Reich and the islamic realm. I fail to understand why you have taken a adversarial role in our discussion, I have only attempted to be honest. I am not blind to my nations past, nor am I blind to my regions failings when it comes to your country. But then I assume you are familiar with YOUR nations approaches to us haven’t been always moderate or balanced. Lavenrunz fluxs in its desire for peace with the reich as much as much as we do. Plus Lavenrunz is no innocent. Mirbach is a example of this. His warcrimes against our citizens have never been acknowledged by you to us.
With our common history of tension and violence I don’t believe either of us have a right to the ‘high ground’ of morality, yet I offer again the chance of peace. We are both new rulers, we do not need to be tired by the blood debts of the past.
I am willing to talk openly, and honestly.

Hofburg, Lavenrunz
Aurora von Konigsmark smiled, and said, "Yes, Ambassador, an exchange of embassies would be most welcome. But you know, we haven't had much contact outside of the NDA matters, your nation and ours, and it would be beneficial if perhaps we also exchanged some cultural information. For instance, I've noticed that you seem, if you'll pardon me, somewhat hesitant about our form of government...could you tell me if that is true, and what you are used to?"

Upon hearing the question Kayla smiled and then replied, "Well I wouldn't say 'hesitant' as such, more like 'fasinated'. I rarely get the chance to witness democracy at work on just a high level... don't get me wrong, Iuthia has long understood that other nations use different methods to govern their nations we've noticed positive things in other democratic nations, a number of which we have good relations with."

Kayla paused for a moment to have a sip of water and then continued. "However, Iuthia has always been a dictatorship... we could give it a nicer name as I understand many nations don't look to fondly on it, though it doesn't change our history. Leadership is a prized quality in Iuthia, the people love to see a leader take charge with complete and utter confidence. Our stories are filled with powerful role models. To us a dictatorship represents a decisive strong leader, weak leaders tend to fall as the military simply will not permit it. All this aside however the deGritz family have stablised this process. Though I imagine it may seem a little odd to outsiders."

"Of course, Excellency." he nodded and a nurse brought her a glass of water.
"Your aide was not with you when you were found, and your embassy is being contacted now."
And in fact this was so: as the Undersecretary at the Foreign Ministry called up the Charge d'Affaires with the good news. It was explained that the Ambassador had had some kind of odd accident.

The interrogator wanted to hold his head. He shook it instead, saying, "You're being very stupid, Commander. Your computer failure made it impossible to use morse code? You had no failsafes? And how then did you manage to use propulsion from our shore towards our waters' limits? How is it honorable, Commander, for you to be so amateurish that you have no reasonable explanation for being there? Now, I'm going to ask you again. What was your mission?" he nodded to the tech, who gave her another jolt. Then he waited for her answer.

Dear Sultan Hatusu

I find it very interesting that you know your submarine was found in our waters, that you know that it had some kind of 'malfunction' and yet you insist that it is I who am instigating a problem.
However, be this as it may. If you would like to have peace, I strongly recommend that we start by exchanging embassies.
As for Count Mirbach, I had thought that by pulling out our troops, by expressing my sorrow over his actions that I was acknowledging his crimes against your country. I am not really sure what more I could do. That man is a murdering fiend, and he is in prison for it and is awaiting trial. If you would like to have an opportunity to accuse him, publically, you could send an envoy or publish a written statement about the effects of his policies in your country.
Sultan Hatusu, although I'm very angry over this incident I am also still grieving for what was done in North Star. I am sure you are as well.

Howling in pain, Yasmina tried to concentrate.Colors swirled before her eyes "I am a military officer , and do not deserve this treatment. I cannot tell you any more. Oh God why are you doing this?"

Empress Aurora von Sachshausen
It is a rulers duty to know what is happening on her vessels.
Again, I state that I have been told by navy command, that the submarine was stricken by techical failure. They were unable to use short range communications and their locator system was for a time offline. I understand this is strange but this is the story I have been presented by my admirals.
If you believe it, or not is now your choice. I myself am not sure if I believe it, but it is the Admiralties story.
I would gladly exchange emissaries, and perhaps once a level of trust has been reach, we would even seek the extradition of Mirbach to North Star to face trial for his crimes. I have imposed the divine will upon my generals whom were involved in that horrid event in tovin, I would like to see the same justice carried out on Mirbach. again I remind you I am not my husband.
I hope this tiny incident will not sour our entire future relationship. I for my part promise to honor, but move on from the past. I hope you will too.
I trust my children into your care.

Elisa smiled as she read the letter, before checking her schedule. It seemed she had quite a bit of free time ahead, so she quickly arranged for a flight. There was no need to monkey around, after all, and it would be much easier to hammer out the details in person. She sent a quick e-mail to Sarah before heading for the airport.

Empress,

Just a quick note.

I'm on my way over to hopefully visit with you in person. It seems that it will be much easier to work these things out in person. When your schedule is open enough, you'll be able to reach me at our embassy. I have with me the lists you've requested, and we can easily go over them together.

The trick with the Captain was not to let him sleep, nor let him know what time it was. What little food they had given him contained a drug that was in fact an anti-sleep drug. He was watched carefully.

Meanwhile, Yasmine was given a break, and a drink of water to regain what she had lost. The interrogator sighed and said, "You know, apart from physically, Commander, these torments pain me as much as you. Do you think I enjoy doing this? Why can't you just tell me what your orders were? After all, if you were in distress in our waters, surely you could have done something to let us know...even now, if you'll just admit it, the pain will stop."

Sieger was somewhat understanding of the Charge d'Affaires passion...after all, he would be freaking out too if an important personage had gone missing on his watch. Harley Earl knew the folks of this nation led oppulant sometimes decadent lives, but this was something really that exceeded his thought of them. It would be good to vacation up here though for a week as he had intended once the message was out of the way. It was no wonder why Gregory was attempting to court Sophia, she was rather pretty. Looking over the picture of her she certainly was cute, not his type but cute none the less. He rode in the first taxi he could find, and he wished it had been a closed car.

He'd have the taxi take him to the largest hotels in the area..that would be his first stop. Checking over his diplomatic credentials he had been issued a temporary offical looking badge to show the locals and even had the number of the main embassy in Hofburg. Of course things would have been much easier if the Embassy had contacted their counterparts in the Imperial Palace as to the location of the Archduchess but as things came from back home requested, it was to be done in secrecy so that absolute surprise could be achieved.

The hotel he had arrived at normally required an advance reservation. With good reason: it cost about the equivalent of fifteen hundred NYNJ dollars a night. The staff wore period costume: in imitation of the Imperial Palace they had powdered wigs, embroidered coats, stockings and heeled shoes. The elevators had attendants, and each hallway had a staff member whose job was to attend any immediate concerns. (such as a lack of ice for drinks)

Dear Sultan Hatusu

I think I've figured out what happened, and you'll be glad to hear it. Your officers are embarassed to admit this, naturally. The executive officer was, for private reasons I guess, dressed as a woman, and during the emergency, which was really slight, he forgot himself and rushed out of his quarters to assist the captain. Well, imagine the consternation on a submarine full of men, seeing what they thought was an attractive woman! And this riot was, naturally, not very flatering to discipline or the Captain's authority.
Understandably, the officers would like to remain in Lavenrunz until this blows over, and I think that would be best. However, I will be sending the crew back ASAP.

I firmly agree. I am also recently informed of the fact that since your submarine had massive computer failure--it turns out that the reactor of course was maintained by computers and the inevitable happened. Your crew are all radiation poisoned and must be quarantined.

The clerk was barely able to keep from wincing at this crude gesture, and wanted very much to take the money, which even for this place was a nice hefty tip. However...greed won over integrity and he did take the money, saying, "Look, I'll be honest with you, friend. None of the real class stay here--it's way too obvious. A group of trucks were rolling up. It was raining, and cold and misty. (Zwoll is in north central Lavenrunz) The radio tower replied, "A group of personnel are here to unload the plane. If you require anything or the opportunity to refresh and relax, please do so."
Beyond the airport, which was large, they could see a big city. There was a faint smell of the sea. From the air they had seen many factories beyond the borders of the airport itself.

Harley nodded his head and left the tip with the man, he'd have to rent a helicopter now, it was no wonder why he had been given the the credit card with an expentional balance and told to keep what remained..at this rate he'd doubt any would remain. Of course he cursed himself for buying that car while still in Hofburg. Leaving the hotel he'd once more find himself in those quaint open air taxis heading toward the nearest heliport for a ride up to Mount Jotun. Renting a helicopter was not a huge chore to someone with a huge amount of credit; it just required patience. But soon he was inside the aircraft, whose rotors were warming up and then taking them soaring over the mountain...he could see that the paths perhaps were suited to a burro or a mountain goat but not a car by any standards...and the slopes below looked dangerous save for the most practiced of skiers. The lodge hung on a great shelf of the mountain, lonely and inviting all at once, wood and stone combined to look almost rustic. Landing in a swirl of snow, he found an icey wind buffeting him. An attendant in bright blue Gore-Tex hurried up, ducking under the rotors, and was shouting, "Take your bags Sir--this way, come and get warm!"
In the shelter of the lodge, he saw a desk clerk smiling at him, wearing a more buccolic form of traditional costume, with long braids and a white ruffled apron. "Welcome to the Jotun Lodge, Sir!" she said in accented english. "And how may we best serve you?"

Dear Sultan Hatusu

Why don't we be honest together? What a nice idea!
Sultan, your Admirals must think that we are entirely stupid. Your country sent a submarine to land a special operations team in mine. Now, if you want to continue playing charades, go ahead, I don't care. If you want war, well I can very very easily suggest that you started it. I'll think about sending the crew back, but to be honest they are lucky they weren't shot outright for being spies. Your choices are these: consider yourself lucky I didn't make a big fuss about it and try to move on, or else make a big fuss yourself. However, your country will look stupid and incompetent.
I know you are an intelligent ruler, so think about this: your military chiefs are trying to provoke an incident since they utterly failed to accomplish their aims with the submarines' mission. You should rake them over the coals and find out what really happened and show them who's boss. We aren't the enemies here, but we are certainly the provoked party. If your people had been straightforward rather than telling lies that a child could see through, this wouldn't have been so awkward.
Anyway, this is all I have to say about the topic. I hope you are doing well, and I actually do hope we can meet in friendship.

"Madame President, I would like to lodge a formal protest and set of demands." said Helga Dresden.
"Another lecture." murmured Prince Karl to Chancellor Schlabel, who grunted in amusement.
"Proceed, Leader of the Opposition." said the President from her high seat.
"Madame President, the Government has entertained the proposals of economic assistance of Mississippi, Menelmacar, the Glorious Hack and other nations which are anti-democratic, are in violation of many UN treaties and moreoever act like they are above the rules of international law. This Government was supposedly elected because it would stand by the law and uphold the Imperial Constitution. When are we going to see a bill which will enable trade with Constantinopolis? When are we going to see this Government stand by its promises to the people?"
Cheers broke out from the Communist ranks, a few of the Populists joining in.
"When? When? When?" the Communists were beginning to chant.
"Order, Order!" shouted the President.
"We do not take our orders from the Opposition, Madame President!" thundered Chancellor Schlabel. Some quiet ensued. "We do not. However, I would ask what agenda the Honorable Leader of the Opposition has--could it not be that she wishes simply to see the CPL dominate Lavenrunz? Could it be that she is trying to start a class war?" He smiled slowly, in response to cries of "Rubbish! Withdraw!" "Madame President, I am a son of the working classes. I earned my rank, from private to officer, from commission to full General in the Imperial Air Force. I served directly in the Council of Ministers of Claudia der Waal, asked to because of my ability. Let me point out that Helga Dresden is an Academican, a daughter of privilege. Which of us better embodies the social changes of the day? The charges against these other nations are not substantiated, indeed I laugh at them; they are without substance as much as the very clouds. However, Constantinopolis alone has suggested interference in our way of life."
"Shameful!" the Constitutionalists and Christian-Nationalists were agreeing.

In the neo-Gothic building that overlooked Parade Square, the Minister of War, advisors and members of the Imperial Chiefs of Staff were seated around a great oak table. The room was soundproofed, and all members present were part of the War Board, all with necessary security clearance. Present were members of the Chancery and Treasurey Staff, who were mostly fussy grey looking men and women with a lot of figures who saw everything in numerical terms.
Admiral Carlotta de Goethe was Lavenrunz' highest ranking military officer after the ageing, feeble Field Marshal von Thessmar, who was most still around to preside over parades. She cleared her throat and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we have been given a brand new budget, and contrary to popular belief, the cuts will be surgical, not wholesale. No bases will be closed down. However, certain specific programs will be halted. The following." she put on her reading spectacles and picked up a file. "The Rakehell Missile program. This will not be begun; procurement will cease. However, its sister program, the Jormungand II, will proceed."
There was a certain tension from the naval ranks, who resented that the Admiral, whom they had expected to be their chief patron, could say this so blithely. Their main hope was that the Air Force would get a harder shafting.
"We will be continuing to maintain and support our C-5 and C-130 transport systems; we will not be launching the Sigmund program. Furthermore, we are cancelling all the former SATO orders on ammunition. Let Lavenrunz be unique, remain unique. However, I am pleased to say that the plan to build four new aircraft carriers and twelve new attack submarines will proceed as planned."
The Air Force and Army officers present fumed. The Army officers in particular realized that the senior service would, as usual, get the lion's share of all funding.
"However, we will be investigating the purchase of aerospace and spatial products from Treznor and Menelmacar, and this plan will be done under the Department of War as a whole. I am appointing General Carl Franze to head this program. General Wurtzmann will take over as Director of the Imperial Rocket Corps."
"As to other appointments: the following senior appointments are to be changed. Field Marshal von Seydlitz to command our forces in Ienotheisa and Surya; Admiral de Rottenburg to take over the Atlantic Fleet. Regardless of the circumstances in Syskeyia, we will begin full support plans to embody the Pacific Fleet, to mainly comprise those forces currently led by Admiral von Tachteberg. Colonel-General von Baden to be senior commander of Armed Forces in Lavenrunz itself. Are there any questions?"

Catherine Ravon sat with her legs crossed, smoothing her long skirt with one hand while she entered notes into her datapad with the other. Operating purely as an observer, she kept her mouth shut. Her lips tightened ever-so-slightly when the Opposition insinuated that Lavenrunz's allies through the NDA somehow considered themselves "above the law."

Ironic, considering the way we behave ourselves better on the international front than, say, Constantinopolis.

She sighed gently and looked up to observe the Communists. The fact that they appeared to lead the Opposition bothered her. They've got entirely too much support for my comfort. I know the Emperor and I would both be a lot happier if von Sachshausen would simply dissolve this farce and rule in truth. But, when in Rome...

She paused briefly as a thought struck her. Vote buying? Would that explain their relative popularity? Hmm...even if it isn't true, it could be arranged. Particularly if an inquiry were to be started, and the investigations fingered the Christian Nationalists. Something to suggest to the good Baron.

Baron Strauss was the Minister of Education, though he was proud enough of being an academic that he preferred to go by Doctor Strauss; his degrees were in history and philosophy. In contrast to the image of the academic, he was actually a figure in the cast of Charleton Heston; craggy faced, tall, resonant in voice in a way that had captured the hearts and minds of many students during his periods of tenure. However, there were other voices, virtually shouting in his principal meeting room, giving him a headache.

"This offer by the Hack is outrageous." fumed Arvid Pluskat, leader of the Populist Party. "I can tell you that there are millions of Lavenrunzians who won't stand for it. Are you actually proposing that we send our students to that pit of depravity?"

"What exactly are you talking about?" asked Strauss wearily. The others in the room looked at Pluskat; members of the Volksraad, a rather thin lipped Bishop and a couple of university presidents.

"What I'm talking about is the fact that the Hack openly advocates not only homosexual relationships but miscegenation--and we might tolerate that last were it not for the fact that it involves having non-human creatures recognized as fully sentient citizens. This is by far the most insidious offer we have had. And that...half human creature, Elisa Day, is no doubt laughing at us, at this opportunity to undermine the morals of our society!" Pluskat exclaimed.

"Are you suggesting that the morals that underpin our society are so fragile that mere exposure to another culture will destroy them?" asked Strauss in a silky voice.

Pluskat paused, eyes narrowing. "That's not what I'm saying, Herr Minister, but young minds are susceptible to new ideas--"

"Are you suggesting that perhaps we start not listening to the ideas of the foreign scientists we brought to Astra to help with the Space Program on that basis? After all, some of them seem to worship nature. And Lord knows, that has had a devastating effect on our morale and morality." Strauss said sardonically.

The Bishop decided to interject. "It's not so much the chance to learn new information technology as this proposal suggests that is worriesome. I think that we can perhaps find an arrangement that serves the nation and yet preserves the hearts and minds of our young people, Herr Minister. Might I suggest that we make sure that they have minders from our own people present who can answer any difficult moral questions they might have?"
Strauss considered this carefully. "These minders would have to be selected by the Ministry after being proposed by those who wish to send them. Their chief concerns would have to include the good of the country."

Pluskat inwardly felt somewhat irritated. Since that election that he strongly suspected had been rigged by the Christian-Nationalists, he had been losing influence, and now here he was being outmaneuvered by a Prince of the Church.

Strauss was mildly concerned at the non-appearance of the Communists. What were they up to?
Lavenrunz

Empress Aurora sat in her bed. It was an hour before she knew her servants would wake her. The light was still grey in the sky. And she was looking towards a new dawn of Lavenrunz as well as on the horizon she could see. She was a bit frightened...and also exhilerated.
