UKUN RASIKAN -- Government and church figures expressed dismay today over threats to freedom of conscience in Knootoss and Syskeyia.

"I was shocked to hear that Knootoss had considered banning books. Surely the days of an index of forbidden books are behind us," said Mari Alkatiri. "Although we are relieved that the Knootian parliament has given its nihil obstat to the Bible, we remains concerned that there may be infringements on freedom of thought in the DDR."

Alkatiri went on to speculate that an organization such as Amnesty International might be invited to investigate threats to freedom of conscience in Knootoss.

Meanwhile, Catholic Bishop F.X. Mangunvijaya has called for the government to extend refugee status to Knootian Christians who feel unable to practice their religion due to societal pressures and official intimidation.

The government had no comment on that, but has made an open offer to extend refugee status to lesbian and gay citizens of Syskeyia in response to the news that the government of the ultra-conservative state had passed laws against "spreading homosexuality."

"That's a clear infingement of the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights," Alkatiri said. "i'm under no illusions about anyone in Syskeyia listening to me, but i am announcing that anyone persecuted for their sexual orientation or gender identity from that country will be welcomed with open arms here. It's common knowledge that lesbian and gay people are persecuted around the world and accuse dof 'bringing it on themselves' by 'spreading' homosexuality. I hope that Syskeyia's loss will be our gain."
