Soon it would be dark, the soldiers thought as they traveled towards the base. Their mission was of the highest priority...and of the highest secrecy. The sun was setting off in the distance, although no one stopped to look. Beauty was far from the mind at the current hour.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The militia man groaned before taking another swig from his flask. No one even knew about their little colony, let alone viewed it at a threat. His job as a guard was a mockery...he just wanted to be away from it all...simply spending every waking hour with his lovely wife and son.

Meanwhile the wife and son were in the small garden of flowers. Running, laughing, they were playing a form of tag. Even though their community was fortified by enormous walls, those were merely there to keep creatures out. A feeling of freedom was always present...away from all politics of the surrounding systems.

The leaders of the community, elected every so often, merely settled disputes between the occupants, organized hunting parties, and distributed the results. One looked out the glassless window at the horizon. The sun was setting in one direction, and in the other night was approaching. He felt a cold chill in the air, something uncommon around such tropical locations. They were the only ones on this planet, and were quite proud that they had been able to survive as long as they did.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Our orders, sir?" the captain asked on his viewscreen. Using a viewscreen was pointless, the captain thought, for the man on the other end was masked in darkness. Such secrecy...it made him uneasy...yet this man had chosen him as one of the best...and he was honored.

"Kill them all...every last one..." the voice replied much to the shock of the good captain. Some of the soldiers overheard the conversation and looked at each other for confermation of what was just said. "All of them...they don't deserve to live...the men...the women...the children...the lame...they have cheated the Empire for too long. No one gets away with the plots that they have come up with over the years. The bell tolls for these bastards...kill them now!"

So informal...so angry...the captain did nothing but agree. He knew who the man was now. No one else would send them on such a terrible mission with the intended results that this man hoped to achieve. However, this realization only brought the captain more faith. He like...no...loved his leader and would do anything for the man. Soldiers nodded as if reading his mind...they would all do the same. So much loyaltly instilled in his troops in such little time, the commander smiled to himself as well...metaphorically patting himself on the back in advance for a job well done.

The crack commando squad came upon the great walls of the village. Readying their weapons, they set explosives all along the huge perimeter and prepared for the invasion.

The explosion rang through the streets, the buildings, and the hearts of everyone. The electricity dimmed, making way for the blue spotlights of ODIN Heavy Battle Armor.

http://invisionfree.com:54/129/44/upload/p204.jpg

The captain raised his right arm, his hand clenced in a fist. Three fingers went up in the air before the fist pumped fowards. Three men in light armor advanced fowards to scout the position.

http://69.57.141.218/237/117/upload/p25.jpg

Seconds passing...the communication's officer recieved a comm from a scout. They had spotted what seemed like militia men and had seen women and children running towards their houses.

"Let's roll," parted the captain's lips as guns were raised and commandos charged.

Soon they all were gone.

Not a single soldier injured...

Not a single villager survived...

...and now the soldiers had to linger within the broken walls of death, for their transports were late...

"Where the fuck's the ship?" Corporal Darren Baynard screamed over his comm link. Captain Nelson Wommack shot him a stern look. The corporal did have a mouth to him.

The clouds opened and a slight drizzle began to fall on the soldiers, the smashed colony borders, and the slaughtered bodies of the villagers. Blood from the corpses ran into the drains, seen only by spotlight in the dark of night.

"Restrain yourself, Corporal," Lieutenant Eric Vinzer ordered calmly.

In defiance, Baynard looked toawrds the Captain who nodded. The Lieutenant was young, only 22, and not many men respected him yet. Hell, almost every graduate of The Orion Academy, was disrespected by servicemen...even elite servicemen it seemed.

Another soldier burst into the scene. "My helmet's defective. The rain isn't getting off the eyeholes. I can't see."

"Restrain yourself, Private," Baynard instructed. Vinzer rolled his eyes and walked away. "Here, let me assess the problem." The private, Lance Radney, took off his helmet and gave it to the Corporal who began checking it over as the rain poured.

"The rain's getting harder," Private Vernetta Pesarchick commented to Private First Class Neil Stiner.

"Aww! Will it mess up your hair?" Stiner said, snickering. Pesarchick removed her helmet, reveiling her crew-cut hair and angry expression.

"I was thinking the same about your delicate skin," she replied, kicking him in the shin. Neither could feel it due to the ODIN boots and shinguards.

"Still," Stiner remarked. "It's been four hours...I'm getting sick of the bodies."

"Shouldn't have put 'em there then," Pesarchick laughed. "This isn't everyone's job."

"I have no problem doing the job...I just don't like cleaning it up," Stiner shot back, offended by a woman insulting his tolerance. "Why the hell is it taking them so long?"

"This mission is extremely important and very secret as well," Vinzor replied, overhearing the conversation. He walked towards them. "They probably don't want a common ship retrieving us. We'll most likely go home in an intelligence vessel."

The two soldier nodded as the Lieutenant's reasoning made sense to them. Pesarchick put her helmet back on, already soaked from what was now a downpour.

Captain, can you please give us confirmation of your location?

Captain Wommack growled at the comm link.

"We're where we are supposed to be, and where you were supposed to be four hours ago!"

Captain, would you please be more specific?

"We're in the compound, get here NOW!"

Lieutenant Vinzor approached the captain and handed him a PADD. On it were departure groups. Captain Wommack, Lieutenant Vinzor, Corporal Baynard, PFC Stiner, Private Radney, and Private Pesarchick made up the last group.

"Damnit," replied the captain. "More time out in this damn rain." He pointed at two other privates. "Find me someplace to stand!"

"T-there isn't any shelter. We destroyed everything..."

"Then build something!"

Meanwhile, a Jedi Master by the name of Jarek Lathan was meditating, when a small disturbance in the Force reverbrated from the destruction of the village. He knew something terrible has happened, very terrible.

OOC: This is just the reaction of a Jedi in my nation as a large number of people being killed in a short time does cause a slight disturbance. Think when Obi-Wan felt the death of Alderaan, but on a much smaller scale. Sept 11, 2001 also caused the same disturbance, BTW. And no, our nation does not know, ICly what happened, save for the Masters (10), so nothing more will come of it.

About an hour later, the lifts were all filled and on the ship. The party mentioned had boarded the last one along with four others and the pilot.

They strapped into their seats as the lift ship took off, ascending through the heavens towards the stars.

Explosions were common things for soldiers...yet they never expect them.

The booming sound rang out, startling all aboard the lift. The engines surged as if they were trying to push through something...but something was pushing them back.

Lieutenant Vinzor pulled open a window. Fire was raining from above.

THE SHIP!

Alarms went off on the lift as the lights went out and the buckles unhooked. The lift rocked violently, and then dropped as the engines failed...

"Send the Sky Marshall in," Nemerov commanded, staring out his window into the sunset. Such beauty...such unspeakable beauty...the sun always set on the planet of Steel Butterfly last.

"You called?" Sky Marshall Zephyr said jokingly, entering the room.

"I've heard many reports of colonies throughout space falling under mysterious attacks," Nemerov stated, not taking his eyes off the sun, slowly falling behind the massive buildings in the never-ending city. With the buildings as bars, the sun seemed jailed, restricted by humanity and the empire.

"Perhaps it is the bidding of the Sol System?" Zephyr said. Nemerov chuckled menacingly.

"Very well," the emperor replied, happy with the response. The sky marshall and him were on the same page it seemed. "Although some colonies are within Sol."

"No one would even think twice if we claimed that those bastards were destroying each other," Zephyr responded.

"Agreed," Nemerov said, turning towards the young sky marshall as the sun disappeared under the metal horizon. "All the commandos are being...taken care of...am I correct?"

"Indeed," Zephyr said, smiling.

"THE SHIP!"

...was echoed by each person on the falling lift. Vinzor stumbled to the cockpit.

"Damage report!" he demanded from the pilot. No response was given. "PRIVATE! I DEMAND A DAMAGE ASSESMENT!" The pilot's head fell down down and hit the controls.

Vinzor lifted the man's body up by his hair, reveiling the pilot's smashed and bloody face. The Lieutenant threw the pilot from the seat and took over the messy controls...but there was no way to steer it. The explosion had damaged the thrusters.

"LIEUTENANT GET BACK IN YOUR SEAT!" Captain Wommack demanded, holding the metal straps down on his shoulders, even though the electric lock had disengaged.

"I need to get this thing to saftey!" Vinzor replied, surprisingly calm.

"Fuck it, Eric, get over here!" Lance begged. "There's nothing any of us can do except hope that we don't hit hard..."

Suspended in time and atmosphere, the lift hastily made it's decent back towards the planet. With a large crash, the ship connected with the solid ground and then skidded across the land, knocking over trees and flying over rocks. It finally came to a halt, surprisingly only about a hundred yards from the destroyed colony. The rain continued to pour, for it was the rainy season on this desert planet, and soon the floor of the lift was covered in water which ran in through the holes.

Lieutenant Eric Vinzor opened his eyes. He was in his strapped down seat...alive...and for the most part unharmed. His upper left arm was bleeding, but there was no indication as to what caused the wound.

He lifted the strapps off of himself and looked about the wreckage. Bodies and blood were everywhere...thought Eric couldn't tell the dead from the wounded. Lifting up some sheet metal, he spotted the captain, who was bleeding from the back of his head.

"Captain," Eric said, inspecting the wound. It didn't appear life threatening...although the captain would most likely have a concussion.

"Captain!" he repeated, louder this time. The blood had stopped. That was a good sign.

"Is he dead?" A voice asked the Lieutenant. Eric turned his head to see Lance Radney approaching him.

"I don't think so," Eric responded. "Check the others."

"AHHHHH!" a voice screamed from the cockpit. "D-DAMNIT! HELP MEEEE!"

Lance rushed over to the cockpit to find Darren Baynard underneath the already dead pilot.

"GET THIS THING OFF ME, MAN!" Darren screamed.

"Calm the hell down...it's the pilot," Lance said, rolling his eyes.

"I DON'T KNOW WHO THE FUCK IT IS! IT DOESN'T HAVE A FACE!" Darren continued.

"Yeah...its the pilot then," Eric replied, loud enough for them both to hear.

"Hurry..." Darren said. "I can't feel my arm...this guy must be cutting off the circulation..."

Lance lifted the pilot off of the Corporal and his eyes got wide. "That...that's not the reason D," he replied.

Darren looked down at this left arm to discover that he had none. He whimpered, then let out a cry of "NOOOO!"

"WHAT?" Darren yelled.

"That ring I got's worth a ton!" Vernetta replied, holding up her bloody hand. "What...you sick or something?"

"He's missing an arm," Eric said, looking up from the captain once more. He put an bag full of painkillers on a hook and injected the IV into the captain's hand.

"Pussy," Vernetta said under her breath. "Damnit I can't find the thing. Maybe it fell out of the ship."

PFC Neil Stiner limped through the tropical forests to where he had seen the crash. He had been flung from the lift ship, but used his parachute to easily descend down towards the planet. However, his parachute got caught on a tree, and he was forced to jump down, twisting his ankle.

Stiner cursed his ankle as he cut through various plant life in the dense jungle-type location. He came upon the lift ship and swung open the door, then threw up.

"There's your answer, Radney," the Lieutenant said. Stiner knocked the IV bag down and Eric shot him a look calling him a moron.

"What the fuck happened here?" Stiner said, spitting to get the taste out of his mouth.

"What do you think, dipshit?" Vernetta asked. "We crashed! I'm amazed so many people survived."

"We...we need to get out of here..." Stiner said, whiping his mouth. "The animal life...all carnivores...at least all that I've seen."

"This place is all too familiar," Eric stated. "I think we're on XIII..."

All the soldiers looked around them, out the windows and doors, and came to the same conclusion. Indeed, they were on XIII, but it seemed like they were on a part uninhabited.

"Where's my arm?" Darren asked, sobbing.

"It's beyond repair," Lance responded, heating a large circular piece of metal attached to a stick over a fire. He approached Darren with the hot rod.

"What are you doing?" Darren asked, his eyes growing huge.

"You won't stop bleeding...I need to char the flesh on the stub..."

"WHAT THE FUCK?" Darren yelled, but Lance held him down as he applied the hot metal to the wound. Darren let an inhuman scream out as the skin and muscle of his arm melted under the immense heat.

Smelling the stench of burning flesh, Neil threw up once more, flailing his arms around. He accidently knocked the IV bag over once more, but this time he knocked some sheet metal down on it, squeezing the pain killers into the captain's veins.

"What are you doing?" Eric screamed, decking the disgusted man in the face, knocking him backwards. The captain's body shook slightly until his chest didn't rise anymore and his mouth opened. "YOU KILLED HIM!"

Lance and Vernetta tackled Stiner and cuffed him.

~Three Days Later~

In the days following, Stiner was stripped of his rank and cuffed to a metal building. The captain was given a proper burial, and Darren still could not get over his lack of an arm.

Vernetta and Lance had set up a makeshift camp of some sort, and Eric regularly searched the village for signs of why they came...and why they did what they did. The group survived by hunting the local wildlife, although they had to be careful. There seemed to be many dead animals in the forest.

When I first visited that place, I was 18 and it was summer. Twenty years ago. I still remember the smell when the helicopter landed and the rotar caused the wind to stir. From the air, the colony seemed normal but from ground level, something was different. Ackerman, who was 2 years younger than I, seemed only interested in the research files he had as usual........

Eric read the note and flipped to the next sheet of paper.

Two days ago, the two of us were assigned to that place. Everything could have been planned out from the beginning or it could have all been a coincidence. As soon as we got off the helicopter, the president of the lab stood in front of the elevator. I don't remember the guy's name. It didn't matter what was said officially, from that day on that lab was ours. We were assigned to be chief researchers at the facility. The two of us ignored the president as we entered the elevator. We had already been briefed about the layout of the area as well as Ackerman's, and with no bad intentions we ignored everyone as usual. Usually, when someone sees our actions, they would react quickly. But the president didn't react at all.

Reading the date, he saw the age of the notes. "Twenty-three years ago," he mused. "These are as old as I am..." He put the notebook under his arm and exited the room, heading back to camp.

Back at the camp, Lance and Vernetta were...getting to know each other a little better as a frantic Darren conversed with the ever-bitter Stiner.

Rolling over, Lance smiled. It had been quite a while. "You sure you pack a punch, eh?"

"I eat my meal with the same vigor in which I hunt for it," Vernetta replied winking, although Lance suspected that she wasn't kidding.

"Then I guess I'm just another trophy," Lance said, hopefull.

"If we never get out of here...you might be the only trophy left," Vernetta responded. Lance beamed. He had known Lt. Vinzor for some time, and it wasn't often that a woman picked him over Eric.

Outside, Stiner laughed at Darren, who hadn't stopped pacing since he regained his energy.

"You think it's so funny! How bout I cut your arm off!" Darren screamed at the killer.

"Go ahead," Stiner said. "Free me!"

"N-no!" Darren said, running off crying. Stiner just shook his head.

"His arm must have meant everything to him," Stiner said in a mock sympathetic voice.

"Hey sweet thing!" Stiner remarked as Eric entered the camp, deep within the broken city. Calmly, Eric walked up to Stiner and punched him in the face. "Faggot!" Stiner yelled, spitting out blood, so Eric kicked him in the neck. Stiner dropped to the ground, gasping for air.

Entering the makeshift cabin, Eric turned away from a naked Vernetta and Lance. Vernetta was actually quite attractive, despite her flat-top hair, yet Eric had little interest in how Lance looked. "I see you two have been busy gathering dinner..." he said, rolling his eyes.

"It was quite tasty," Vernetta said, laughing. "Delicious" Lance remarked.

"That's...good to hear," Eric said, throwing Lance his pants. "Where's Darren?"

"Good...because it's time to get some rest," Eric responded, grabbing some meat out of the icebox and holding it over the makeshift stove.

"Indeed," Vernetta replied, snuggling up to Lance. Eric finished his meal, put out the fire, and crawled into the bed beside them.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Eric," a voice whispered. "Eric get up!"

The wind was howling and Eric could hear it blowing against the shelter.

"What is it?" Eric aked. "Why the hell did you get me up?"

"Stiner," Vernetta replied. She seemed scared...and Vernetta never showed fear...

"Did that son of a bitch escape?" Eric asked, feeling for his pistol.

"No," Lance responded. "We hear him...screaming..."

Finding his weapon, Eric looked up, surprised.

"It went on for a minute or so...a sickening scream...not human it seemed..." Lance continued. "And then it stopped...as many footprints left the scene."

"So we went out to check on him," Vernetta said. "And he wasn't there anymore..."

Eric's eyes got big. That bastard..."So he uncuffed himself?"

"N-no," Lance stammered. "He was still cuffed...or at least..."

"His hand was still cuffed to the building," Vernetta said, shaking. "It was...bit off below the elbow."

"Wha...?" Eric asked in disbelief.

"We think he was eaten..." Lance concluded.

Eric couldn't believe it. There was nothing out there to eat them! He ran out the door to where Stiner should have been...only to find the hand...and blood...everywhere...

Lance and Vernetta, seemingly content with themselves, fell back asleep, yet Eric had no such luck. Instead of sweet dreams, the image of the hand mixed with the bloody carcases of the women and children they slaughtered danced through his mind. Why the hell weren't those bodies still around? Where the hell is that bastard Stiner?

So instead of thinking, he merely read. However, his reading material, coming from the book of notes he found, didn't supply him with many happy thoughts.

While the three of us were on the elevator, Ackerman kept his eyes on the research files. The files contained information about a new firo-virus found 2 decades ago in XIII called the Q-virus. Even now there are thousands of people researching the Q-virus. But the people are always divided in half -- one group dedicated to saving people from the virus, and the other to kill people with it.

Eric remembered well the Q-virus. It mysteriously killed millions within the Steel-Earthen colony and the colony was eventually nuked in order to destroy it. However, the ever-mutating virus lived on in other Earth nations, killing all it encountered. The people were told that it was destroyed...what were these notes saying? Could it just be dorment?

It has the quality to destroy the physical structure within 10 days and even now, a cure hasn't been found. If used as a bio-weapon it would display incredible destruction.
But because making a bio-weapon is against the law we would not use the virus as a weapon. But I'm certain that someone out there would use this as a weapon. So to prepare for a case of that nature it is good to do research on it now. But the line between finding a cure and making a bio-weapon is thin. This is because the actual research conducted do not differ at all between the two. So one could say that they are reseaching for a cure and be making a bio-weapon.

Eric knew the information. The infected would die by extreme internal bleeding and the decomposition of internal organs...and eventually skin...while the infected person was still alive. Eventually something important was ruptured, like a lung or the heart, and the person would die a painfull, horrible death.

NiMBUS Biotechnologies was a organization created to do research on viruses. As a cover they tell the world that they are a company researching cures for these viruses. But the truth was that they are a bio-weapon development organization.

"What the fuck?" Eric said out loud. He looked at the lightbulb. "Produced and Developed by NiMBUS." He looked at the bedsheets. "Produced and Developed by NiMBUS." He looked at his pistol, and the bullets within it. "Produced and Developed by NiMBUS." NiMBUS made everything...could they also make bio-weapons?

The finding of a way to stabilize the ever-mutating original virus which restructures the human DNA was the start of everything. Using the original virus as a base, an enhanced virus would be made to be a bio-weapon. This was labelled Plan 13. The original virus was an RNA virus and would cause abnormalities that would enhance a person. Ackerman planned on combining the two viruses to make an enhanced virus. The sample of the Q-virus had already been brought to this reserach facility.

"A sample?" Eric thought out loud. "How?"

We had gone through many elevators and had finally reached the destination. Upon entering, even Ackerman was impressed by the sight. This was our first encounter with that woman. We were not told anything about that woman. Everything relating to her was kept top secret and the data was not to be leaked to the outside. Information obtained from records showed that she had been here since this lab was created. For 11 years, she had gone through the tests with many viruses.

Filled with rage, Eric slammed the book shut. His parents had died due to the Q-virus.

The door of the makeshift bunker swung open. A bloody man missing a limb stumbled in. Eric pulled up his gun.

"Darren?"

"THEY'RE HERE!" Darren screamed, falling over and hitting a chair on his way down. The scream woke up Lance and Vernetta, bringing them both to their feet. Eric shut the door and turned on more lights.

"Who's here?" Eric asked calmly, not taking his gun off of the man. Vernetta touched his forearm, asking his with his eyes to lower it. Eric knew it would be polite to do so, but he just didn't feel safe.

"THEY'RE HERE!" the black soldier screamed once more, pulling himself to his feet with his one arm.

"Who the hell's here? What's he talking about?" Lance asked, confused and obviously still tired.

"THEY'RE HERE!" Darren shouted for a third time, grabbing Eric by the collar of his uniform. Eric hit him in the face with his pistol.

"You better shut the fuck up, back the fuck up, and calm the hell down before I knock you the fuck out," Eric recited in a drawn out way. He aimed the pistol at Darren's head. Lance rushed over and injected Darren with a tonic to calm him down.

"The...creatures..." Darren said softly. After putting up some what of a fuss, Vernetta led him to the sink which they made so that he could clean up. Eric rushed to the notebook. Flipping through pages, he came upon a section.

The QII Virus was a huge scientific breakthrough. The military and terrorist possibilities were endless. Instead of mutating itself, the virus would mutate whoever or whatever it was inside of. Once contracted, the virus would begin to mutate the host in a matter of ten minutes. However, this wasn't good enough for the President, so Ackerman began Plan 13b, trying to get the reaction time down to ten seconds. After a period of five years, Ackerman discovered that the lowest possible reaction time was 81 seconds. The President was upset, but after Ackerman told him of the "enhanced virus" possibilities, he was thrilled, and proposed the QII virus to the government of Steel Butterfly. Emperor Kyou Graav turned the project down. The President did not inform the Emperor of the "enhanced virus" now named QIII.

"Kyou Graav?" Eric said, shaking his head. "The government knew about this?" Both Vernetta and Lance looked at him strangely.

"So were do we begin?" Nemerov asked, unsure of what to do next.

"Unfortunately sir, we've already passed that mark," Sky Marshall Zephyr replied. "I don't like it...I don't like it at all. We're covering up for NiMBUS, cleaning up after them. Progress or no progress I don't like killing innocents, much less some of my finest men."

"Quiet, Sky Marshall," the Emperor responded. "There isn't a living being in the Empire who hasn't benefitted from NiMBUS. Their testing grounds are their business...it is the nature of business in the Empire."

"Yes..." Zephyr said with a cold look on his face. "But companies like Loire Wine don't experiment on, mutate, and slaughter people."

"In the name of science," Nemerov began, not needing to finish. "Be gone now, surely you have things to take care of..."

"There's something else," Zephyr continued. "Copies of production notes are still in the colony. Should someone find these..."

"...then they'd be killed before they could put them to any use," Nemerov said, turning towards the window. "We both know that..."

The storm began as Eric turned the page, ignoring Lance and Vernetta. Thunder broke with every phrase, driving the truth deeper into his mind.

...and because of that NiMBUS lost its government funding. Without the funding, NiMBUS needed a way to continue to pay for its experiments. Naturally, with its knowledge of viruses, it turned to medical equipment, as well as many other areas of business. Quickly, it became the second largest consumer corporation in the Empire, second only to the enormous Keccer Co. During this time, Dr. Ackerman succeeded in making the QIII virus. We celebrated in secret along with the President, however, the president seemed detached. After the small party, Dr. Ackerman and I were informed of our grim task at hand - testing the virus on humans...living humans.

Lance and Vernetta looked over Eric's shoulder as he read, his heartbeat quickening. He turned the page.

In the dead of winter, the QIII virus was unleashed on an unsuspecting colony in the Alpha Centauri sector, specifically designed for this purpose. The people showed quick mutation, yet in three seperate forms. A certain percent of the people died within days, some within hours. Another, smaller percent simply became zombie-like - the walking, living dead. The virus seemed to re-animate them, continuing their wretched life. About 1% of the people showed a different response. When exposed to things such as magnetic force, extreme light, or other things, they mutated into what seemed to be almost "super beings" however horrific they appeared. While this was highly interesting to the President, he deemed it too high a risk at this early stage, and terminated the colony.

"Those...bastards..." Lance replied. Vernetta was speachless. Eric read on.

A year later we were ready to try it again. Another colony was infected, but this time, before it was destroyed, the various "super beings," now named "Quakes" were taken out and transported to another colony, deeper within the Alpha Centauri system. All life within the colony died, but it was not determined if it was due to the Quakes or the QIII virus itself. Another test was needed.

Two months after the second colony experiment, with the Quakes still in the second colony, a team of first-rate men entered the second colony. They were from a foreign power, later determined to be the Empire's ally "Diamond Sabre". Fearing that word would spread, the President locked down the colony and cut communications. For the next two weeks, Dr. Ackerman took notes on the fight between the Quakes and the agents. The agents were slaughtered and eaten, along with one Quake when another turned on it. A more regulated, more controlled version of the Quakes needed to be produced. The colony was terminated.

Eric looked towards Lance and Vernetta in both horror and confusion. Darren exited the bathroom, but didn't seem interested in the notes. He quickly curled up on the floor and fell asleep.

One colony after another came and went, and soon it had been 10 years since I first came to this place. Every time I come here, I remember the smell of the wind from that day. The buildings and the surroundings all looked the same as before. I hadn't seen Dr. Ackerman for months, and I was beginning to worry. He had always been better at genetics, and was quickly rising up through the ranks. I was told less and less of the happenings involving the Q virus and it's many forms. It was then when I had a breakthrough. Deep within every atom are the protons, neutrons, and electrons. Normal atoms achieve a positive state by losing an electron, and a negative state by gaining one. However, I discovered a way to change the atom's charge by shifting the neutrons. Testing it on animals, they all gained the direct ability to manipulate metal. Bending, shaping, attracting, repelling...it was all within their reach. Dr. Ackerman caught sight of my my recent project and became highly interested. Once again, we were reunited.

"What ya doin'?" A calmer Darren asked, waking from an uncomfortable sleep.

"Reading," Eric replied, mesmerized by the notes, the information, the horror...

However, Dr. Ackerman and the President were far more interested in using my discovery as a way to clean up after themselves. My discovery, used as nothing more than biogenetic soap! I couldn't have it! I couldn't let my discovery be used this way! So...I tested it out on a human. The President was angry, but Dr. Ackerman was now intrigued. Finally, my work would be appreciated. I was locked up in a plastic cell, and brought food twice a day.

The last phrase caught Eric off guard. Who was this man? He flipped to where the back page should be, only to find many pages torn out. Still confused, he went back to where he left off and read on.

One the next page, the writing was now in ink, yet the same handwriting.

Here I stayed, unable to use my abilities, or even experiment on myself. Luckily, Dr. Ackerman would not experiment on me either without knowledge of what I did to myself. The President suceeded in creating the clean up weapon from my information, and it became his choice way of experimental colony termination. Dr. Ackerman suceeded in "fixing" the QIII virus. He now had control over the Quakes, through vast machinery. The President of NiMBUS himself developed the QIV virus, but Dr. Ackerman told him it was far too dangerous. The QIV virus gave the infected all of the abilities of a Quake, yet they kept their mind. Angered by Dr. Ackerman's veto of production on it, the President cloaned himself three times and then injected the virus into his body. He mutated out of control, and quickly died. Dr. Ackerman brought in a puppet president, although he pretty much led the company - now without restraints. I was finally released from my cell. It had been five years since I performed the experiment on myself. I was put incharge of non-viral experiments. Dr. Ackerman seemed attached to his work, and after all he was an expert. I began research on a way to make a living being invisible, for it had always been a dream of mine.

The Q-A Virus, Dr. Ackerman's latest discovery, was the pinnicle of what he'd been working on for the last fifteen years. It...

...and then the page was ripped...as well as the ones following it.

The older Quakes, unleashed and unchained somehow, drove their unfeeling and unthinking bodies towards what they desired most...food...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A horrible screaching sound rang through the makeshift home, causing all four Marines to grab their ears, trying to shield out the sound. Darren screamed back, pressing his other ear into a blanket to make up for his missing arm and hand. The door was burst open and smoke grenades bounced around the room.

When the smoke cleared, Eric and the others each had three guns pointed at their heads. The man who appeared to be the leader entered, adjusted his sun glasses, and flixed his windswept, bleach-blonde hair by slicking it back. The man looked over each person, and then signaled to his twelve soldiers to only have one man guarding each Marine.

"Who's the commanding officer?" the sun-glassed man asked with an air of authority. Steel Butterfly Marines never wore rank identification, because of past incidents with interrigation.

"He's dead...I'm sure you'll find him about six feet underground near some dropship wreckage," Eric replied sarcastically yet in a serious tone. The man pulled back to hit Eric, but restrained himself.

"I-it's him!" Darren whimpered, panicing. "The g-guy who mouthed off to ya!" The blonde man smiled but then saw Darren's arm, and frowned.

"Get 'em out of here!" the blonde man ordered to his soldiers. His men took out everyone except Eric. When they had left, he looked down on the journal. "So...what have you learned?"

"Not enough," Eric said, wondering how this blonde haired man knew what was in the notes or if he knew anything at all. "You need a good read?"

"I know enough," the blonde man said, frowning once more.

The soldiers and the surviving commandos swiftfully swept through the city and came upon what looked like the entrance to a bunker. The soldiers blew the door open and the blonde man ordered them to go inside. Little did Eric know how few would come back out of that wretched doorway.

The group split up, with Lance, Vernetta, and 8 of the soldiers going through a big door and down a long hallway. Darren and 4 soldiers went up a spiral staircase and into a room, shutting the door behind them. With his gun pointed at Eric's head, the blonde man took Eric down into what seemed like a basement. "What are we doing here?" Lance asked his captors, looking solumnly at Vernetta. The hallway was beautifully decorated, with paintings and statues covering the walls. Dimly lit, the candles, still burning on the walls, cast dancing shadows on the floor and the ceiling. Someone had been here not so long ago...

"We are investigating the significance of this facility," the soldier repeated, as if he had memorized it from a textbook.

"So you're from Steel Butterfly?" Vernetta asked back, hoping they were from the same nation.

"You could say that," another soldier replied. They had reached the end of the hallway.

"What are your mission objectives?" Lance asked, happy that they were of the same race.

"Eric Vinzer, eh?" the blonde haired man said, seeminly more friendly, even with his pistol never abandoning the back of Eric's skull.

"Yes," Eric replied cautiosly. "And who may you be?"

"Captain Leon Williams," the blonde haired man replied with a streak of pride running through his voice.

"What do you know about those notes?" Eric asked, still curious as to how Captain Williams knew about them.

"You really think you're in the position to ask questions here?" Leon asked, laughing. Eric shook his head, reminded of the situation he was in. "The Q-A Virus, Dr. Ackerman's latest discovery, was the pinnicle of what he'd been working on for the last fifteen years. It was the successful creation of a regulated super soldier, one that in time would replace the mobile infantry and the space fleet as they are known today in the Empire. While Dr. Robert Ackerman was obsessed with the Q virus, I worked on what interested me, and delegated everything else to less experienced scientists. Time and again, the scientists would fail, yet Dr. Ackerman and I were happy. Robert and his virus, me working on invisibilty, magnetic force, self-regeneration, and the mythical "spring of eternal youth", locked somewhere in Human DNA. Years past, with more discoveries, more experiments, more money, until I had successfully completed all four of my projects." Leon concluded.

Eric recognized the first line of Captain William's statement...it was from the notes. "You have the other pages!" Eric exclaimed, turning around to the barrel of a gun. Leon shook his head and pointed at it.

"So you work for NiMBUS?" Eric asked. Leon shook his head.

"No," Captain Williams said. "Dr. Ackerman and I had a falling out some time ago. He couldn't spend enough time on anything other than the Q virus when he became President of the company. Funding for my projects was slowly lessened and then eventually cut. I was laid off by the man who I came to the company with. I couldn't simply carry my experiments out, so they were destroyed. I wrote down a reflective diary and stored it in one of the experimental colonies. I also stored my experiments...and then I left for another company."

"Who do you work for?" Eric asked.

"I work for Bivens Co.," Leon replied. "But I couldn't do my experiments there. They were illegal after all. However, the results were far from illegal, but I only had a small amount."

It slowly came to Eric. The truth...the amazing yet horrific truth. "Your notes say you have certain magnetic powers...."

"They also say that each one of my four experiments were successful," Williams said. He slowly began to fade from view until he was invisible. The gun was all Eric could see. Amazed, Eric spun around, only to see Williams reappear. He turned back, and saw that the gun was still pointed at his face. It slowly moved and aimed at Leon. Firing, the bullet went through Captain William's arm. The Captain yelled in pain, but soon the bullet hole had closed, leaving only the blood on his arm. The gun slowly floated back to his hand, and for the first time, Captain Williams took his aim off of Eric Vinzer.

""The spring of eternal youth"?" Lt. Vinzer asked, amazed by the display of power. Leon Williams laughed.

"I'm 281 years old, Mr. Vinzer," Williams said, smiling. Eric looked shocked.

"So Dr. Ackerman is long dead?" He asked, connecting the facts.

"No...I'm from 200 years in the future as well..."

"What?" Eric said, finding it hard to believe. Then again, the man just turned invisible, shot himself with a gun suspended in air, and healed the wound in a matter of seconds. Could he be that old and still look young?

"I'm from a special...time squad...from a future Steel Butterfly. Something is about to happen soon that effects the...Empire...greatly." Williams said. "I sent myself back because...unlike those I work with...I remember the good times. These, Lieutenant Vinzer, are the good times. This thing that will happen soon...you and someone else affect it greatly. I...am making it my personal responsibility to enlighten you to the true nature of the conflict."

"Conflict? You mean you want me to switch sides?" Eric asked, intrigued.

"Precisely," Leon said. "Now, come with me..."

Captain Williams led Lieutenant Vinzer to a large window at the end of a hall. Inside, Eric could see Darren and the two soldiers with him meeting up with Lance, Vernetta, and the eight soldiers with them.

"Eric," Leon began. "NiMBUS doesn't always clean up after themselves well. You, your team, and the rest of the task force you were in were sent in to clean up after the Corporation by your government and military. They had planned to destroy you then, and cover it up as a mistake. However, several things went wrong. For one, you survived. Also, the taskforce only killed the experiments on the surface."

"Experiments?" Eric asked, not taking his eyes off of his team members. "Those people were...normal..."

"They all had cancer," Captain Williams said.

"But cancer was cured by..." and then Eric understood. "...NiMBUS..."

"Cancer was cured by the Q virus. More precisely the Q-Raid "virus", designed to mutate with the Cancer and effectively eliminate it," Leon explained. "As you see, NiMBUS and Dr. Ackerman are not all...bad. This is how they obtained such influence on the Empire. Without NiMBUS, Steel Butterfly would be a much different place."

"Since cancer was cured, why did those people have it?" Eric asked, looking Captain Williams in the face, trying to see his eyes through the glasses.

"Because from every cure comes a weapon. The Q-Besiege weapon is directly related to the Q-Raid Cancer cure. You mess with a few things...and the cure becomes a sure cause. You mess with a few more...and the death becomes quicker...or longer. Either way..." Leon said. "...this place was a testing ground."

"And they couldn't let people with a manufactured version of cancer roam the planet," Eric continued.

"It went beyond that. Like I said, you only killed the experiments on the surface, but the explosions opened the lab underneath to the surface. An experiment is most likely what killed your...captive," Leon explained.

"The lab...underneath..." Eric began. "Why the fu ck are we down here? How can I help your future if I'm dead? That isn't how I "help" is it?"

"I told you already...you have to switch sides. One of the sides isn't death," Captain Williams said. "But you have to have a reason to switch. Going by my word alone will only confuse you."

About ten things broke through the wall in the large room where Darren, Lance, Vernetta, and the soldiers were in. The things, horrific in appearance, screamed...yet Eric and Leon could not hear it through the glass. One ate a soldier, taking a huge bite out of his stomach. Two more soldiers opened fire only to be eaten by four more monsters.

Darren ran for the exit, but was lifted off the ground by a creature hanging on to the wall. Darren screamed, as the beast bit his head off, before being gunned down by Lance, Vernetta, and the remaining soldiers.

"Get them the hell out of there!" Eric screamed, banging his fist off of the one way plexi-glass.

"We're leaving...now," Leon said, opening the door to the exit. "We have to rescue the other man I need."

"I'm not leaving without them!" Eric shouted, running out of the hallway and through a few doors.

"I'm not letting you die!"

"Then help me you ass hole!"

Eric and Leon rushed into the room in time to see the humans huddling in the corner, still trying to fight off the fiends. Two of the ten monsters had been felled, only 5 of the thirteen humans remained. The eight dead had been eaten amongst the chaos. Eric began firing his pistol as Leon unloaded with a polaron rifle, blasting two off the ceiling. Two more soldiers were carried off, leaving only one with Lance and Vernetta.

Rising into the air, much to the amazement of everyone including the beasts, Leon lifted up three of the things into the air with him and decaptiated them with a "melted" form of his gun. Chris, Vernetta, and Lance finished off the 8th monster as one of the two remaining ate the last nameless soldier.

"Let go of your weapons!," Leon screamed, forcing one of the things through the opposite wall. The group did as they were told, and Leon "melted" the things into a giant spike, which he thrust through the last monster's back, killing it.

The creature began to fall, and as it hit the ground, it caught Vernetta underneath its giant claws. Lance screamed out in agony, as the claws stuck through her midsection.

Descending to the ground, Captain Williams returned his sunglasses, which had fallen off, to his face and cut the two enormous claws off the beast. Immediately Lance tried to pull them out, but Eric stopped him.

Vernetta tasted blood as it rolled down her lips, emulating the lipstick that she never wore. "I...I wanted to...grow...old..." she whispered to Lance, who held her head up, holding her body in his hands. She spit blood on his shirt, coughing it up, but he didn't seem to notice or care.

"Shhh..." Lance replied, holding back tears, staying strong. "Its ok...we're gonna get you out of here..."

"I...love..." She said, closing her eyes. Frantically, Lance checked for a pulse, and sighed when she had one.

"You said you had a ship," Eric said to a stoic Captain Williams. "Lets get her out of here!"

Captain Williams stared at her, like he was looking into her soul. He leaned over and lifted her eyelid. "She's infected..." he reported, as if he was saying something had run out of batteries.

"No..." Lance said. "NO!" Lance charged at Captain Williams who held him back with magnetic force. Defeated, Lance fell to his knees on the floor. "I don't want to see it."

Pulling out a pistol, Captain Williams shot Vernetta three times, and each time Lance's cries got louder.

"Not the face," Eric pleaded, but Leon wouldn't have it any other way. She was infected...a zombie in minutes...

The shell splattered blood across the already wretched floor as a sound rang out from above...the sound of ships.

"They're here!" Eric shouted, joy coming back into his voice, but Leon exited the room with him. Eric begged Lance to follow, but Lance stayed, not moving from the corpse of Vernetta.

Minutes later, after Eric and Leon had already left the bastard colony, cloaked in Leon's ship from the future, Imperial Troops decended on the room, retrieving Lance and setting fire to everything dead. They set off back towards the Orion Sector...hoping to live another day.
