Political Change in the Republic

"The results of the Presidential and Senatorial elections have been finalized, and in a stunning turn of event the National Republicans have defeated the Federalists by a landslide in most states and for the Presidency. All polls showed the Federalists leading by a strong margin in the beginning of the campaign season, with victories in the Tortugan Wars, the early victories of WWIX, an economic boom, and gradual move to the world stage, the Federalists seemed unstoppable, controlling over 80% of the Senate."

"But over the last three months the National Republicans have used recent events against the Federalists, namely President Hart, to oust their control. The NR party blamed the Federalists for the constant war footing the country has been on for going on eight years, the mounting casualties, and the lagging economy due to heavy war taxes. The Federalists still remained content that they would be victorius, as the popular speeches of President Hart led the country through the devestating retreat from West Africa, and the defense of the Atlas mountains and Iberian. Adding into this was the President past, as a Grand Admiral who was in command in the Battle of Death to PETA bay, where he utterly destroyed an enemy force, the Federalists wasted no time mentioning how bad the odds were there, and that the President knew how to handle things when they went sour."

"But the clincher to the NR campaign came last week with the mysterious attacks (Check WWIX threads) on the Federal Navy in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Hundreds of ships were damaged or sunk, thousands were killed, and the Nationals blamed the Federalist Administraion and Senate for not providing adequate protection for the Fleet from space-borne threats, alluding to the "Star Sheild" initiative abandoned by the Federalist Senate. The moment of triumph for them being the shot of the National Presidential candidate John Rayth holding a child sobbing over the casket of his dead father, killed when the carrier Bellorophon was sunk in the attack. Their new attack focused on the President's poor handling of the situation such as in this ad"

*Pictures come on the screen of parents, spouses, and children sobbing, crying, staring off into the distance. Shots of the damaged fleets, smoke clouding the view of some ships. Then the words, "Where was the President in this time of national desperation". A shot of President Hart greeting other dignataries at the LAGD Conference after landing. Then a shot of John Raythe holding the sobbing child. "Remember on October 20th, which candidate cares more about the country".*

"That particular ad was their most succesful, and some attribute it to their success. That the President was at a LAGD conference did not help him either, as the public has been split over whether or not the Republic should be involved in an international Alliance, as they are tired of war, and not wanting to go to war again to protect some far away land from a threat they have never really seen before."

"The President waited until October 18th (The attacks were on the 8th) when he returned to Philadelphia to make his speech concerning the attacks, but most of the public was decided, it was time for the Federalists to go. So, they voted yesterday, and the ballot was counted, and in a humiliating defeat over 72% of the population voted for John Raythe. The Senate also saw an upset, as 325 of the 450 seats went to the National Republicans, with only 56 going to the Federalists."

"In his victory speech, the President-elect John Raythe promised to bring an end to the Republic's involvement in WWIX, to stablize their neighbor, Canadian Princes, quickly, to ensure adequate defense of the Navy, and indeed the entire country from space-borne threats, and pull the Republic out of all Alliances that will not benefit it directly."

"He didn't specifically name what alliances, however with still a large percentage of the population supporting the LAGD and AN alliances, it is doubtful he will risk to pull out of those without some serious political debate"

"The outgoing President, James Hart, gave no concession speech, and was said to be sitting at his desk in Philadelphia, with his head in his hands asking "how"."

"This has been NRN 6 o'clock news, now on to Robert Murdo for the weather...."

"Continuing with his new policy of increasing isolationism, President Raythe and his cabinet have announced the Republic is pulling out of the Pelican Alliance. He cited inactivity on the part of the Pelican Alliance members to do anything whenever the Republic has been under threat, and a general falling apart of the Alliance. No word from representatives of the Alliance has been heard, however considering the Republic was the preimenent military and political force in the Alliance, it is likely the Alliance will fall apart shortly, with the last four members unable to find a sufficient reason to stay together."

"This comes hot on the heels of the President's announcement that war taxation would be over within weeks, and of massive cutbacks in the defense budget to make up for the taking back of war taxation. Several bases have already been cited as needing to go including the Port Royal Naval Base, Norfolk Naval Base, Sevilla Naval Base, and some parts of the fortress of Formosa. We will keep you updated on the developements shortly after the President's speech tonight"

The country is in an uproar today following President Raythes' appointment of Richard Prix as the Foreign Minister of the Republic. Richard Prix is a devout Catholic, and during his Governership of Silamar he temporarily jailed a group of athiest protesting his erection of a statue of Jesus on the cross outside the Governor's Building in that states capitol. This combined with his adamant oppisition to the Federal Governments stance on seperation of church and state, has led many to label him as a religious wackol, and certainly not someone who should be in charge of relations with other countries."

"But President Raythe reassures the Senate that this appointment is based on merits, not history, and he will continue to appoint ministers based on their merits. This certainly will be his case when he announced his Minister of the Interior next week, with the front-runner being George Carlyle, the President of Nukes 4U! the company that recently lost millions when the Government refused to allow it to expand it's mining operations. President Raythe says he means to change the entire political landscape of the Republic back to it's roots, this includes it only involving itself locally."
