NEWSFLASH:

Mr Hurr has conducted his first training session in preparation for the World Cup. "Although it is still early and we do not need to qualify, I think for the team to have any chance of winning the cup, the team must start training together early, try to gel together as a team. It also helps us to identify and build up young talents." One of the young talents is none other than Dankeschoen F.C.'s rising star, defender Messerschmittahugengrossenbiggenfattenheineapmudorischeronzonisonobuonioevrepique. "He is a good talent. However, we need to groom him to be a world class defender. To do this, we will need to give him experience playing among the best in the world."

Oldenburg Seriously Injured in Escalator Fall
Likely to miss all of World Cup 10

JAMESTOWN -- Bedistan Lions star goalkeeper Erik Oldenburg is currently in good condition tonight at Northeast Escambia Regional Medical Center in Jamestown.

Yesterday, Oldenburg was shopping at the Jamestown Mall, looking for some gifts to give to his daughter as he prepared to leave home for World Cup 10 qualifiers. He was riding an escalator downward when an apparently impatient 34-year-old man angrily shoved him aside. Oldenburg fell over the side of the escalator several feet to the floor below.

The football player is "okay", according to lead physicians at the hospital, though he has suffered several fractured ribs and vertebrae.

"This really sucks," commented Oldenburg when we went to visit him today. "I was all fired up, ready to kick some ass, when this happened. Now I don't know if I can play any time soon."

Oldenburg has been placed on the team's disabled list, and coach Gene Barber says it is "unlikely" that he will be able to play in World Cup 10. "It's a damn shame," says Barber. Chuck Mitchell, team captain, will take Oldenburg's place as starting keeper.

New National Stadium Completed
135,000-seat venue to open with first WC10 qualifying home match

MIDWAY -- It's official: the James Parker National Stadium in Midway, Paruvia, is complete and ready for business.

The stadium, pictured below, will now be used instead of Holmes Stadium in Columbia for national football events. It will also be the new home of the BFL's Midway Wolves. The Columbia Sharks will continue to play at Holmes.

http://bellsouthpwp.net/h/a/harleyt_1387/james_parker.png

"We're excited," says Stephen Rogers, Secretary of Sports and Games. "It was kind of sad that we couldn't even scrounge up a 100,000-seat venue for a team ranked in the top five in the world. Now we have it, showing that we really are up there with the big boys."

The stadium, named after Jim Parker, who coached the Bedistan Lions through World Cups 5, 6, 7, and 8, will be officially opened with the Lions' first home qualifying match of World Cup 10.

In respone to the recent news out of Giant Zucchini regarding a talented young new defender by the name of Messerschmittahugengrossenbiggenfattenheineapmudorischeronzonisonobuonioevrepique, a representative from BURP (Borderlands United Reporters Partnership) announced that ASPN Reporters, and in fact all television and radio media announcers among BURPs membership, will refuse to attempt to say the young mans' name on the air. Print media will, of course, use his given name as always. However, several ASPN announcers got together in order to practice pronouncing

Messerschmittahugengrossenbiggenfattenheineapmudorischeronzonisonobuonioevrepique's

name in anticipation of World Cup 10 matches. They discovered that it is not possible to say

"Messerschmittahugengrossenbiggenfattenheineapmudorischeronzonisonobuonioevrepique"

without stopping at least twice to take a breath. Contending that this would make them look ridiculous, they stated they would not attempt it on the air. After a few days, during which time other live media announcers tried pronouncing...it..., BURP took their stand in support of live media announcers.

A compromise measure will be offered to the Giant Zucchini Football Association. ASPN announcers would be willing to use a "nickname" for the young footballer. As an example, they have offered "Bigfatknifesqueeze", or "Messypique". This reporters favorite option offered is "Pastaboy".

Commerce Heights Chronicle - International Edition
February 13, 26 CHE
New National Stadium Proposed
COMMERCE HEIGHTS, CH - After the recent announcement that Bedistan's James Parker National Stadium (capacity 135,000) was completed, many Manhattanites think that Commerce Heights should also have a stadium of that size. "Maxisoft Stadium only holds 101,000 people when packed over capacity," said an anonymous representative of the CHFF. "It may be enough for soccer at the professional level, but as a venue for international events, it is insufficient." In a normal World Cup qualifying match at the stadium, only 5,000 tickets are available to foreign spectators, leaving as many as 95,000 for Manhattanites.
A well-known architect has proposed a new national stadium that would hold as many people as Bedistan's new stadium:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/mayorefficiency/national%20stadium.gif
3D rendering of proposed National Stadium
If the stadium were to be approved for construction, it would be completed in the fall of 30 CHE, only a year before World Cup 11. (OOC: World Cup 9 was in 23 CHE, so WC10 is in 27 and WC11 is in 31.)
The CHFF expects to have the project ready for government approval next week. If the project is approved, sponsorship bids will begin immediately afterwards.

OOC: Sorry, you can't fool us - that's Ashburton Grove, soon-to-be home of Arsenal FC. Capacity, 60,000. I assume you're using the shrinking machinery that allows almost 200,000 to fit into the Ravenspire national stadium (capacity of RL stadium used in pic, 42,000) on a lower power setting.

IC, from Progressa TeleSport:

Sterke Turatas: Faiwe Irafma has declared his resignation from international football after World Cup Ten is complete. The Quarua Lakeside legend, now 34, says he will focus on club football after the next World Cup and possibly consider managing Lakeside in the future. Tuntal Karites reports.
TK: [Irafma entering Progressair Stadium to big roar]
Faiwe Irafma is a national icon.
[Irafma's goal against LE] Over 350 goals for his club and many more for his country, including the historic winner against Liverpool England that helped the Progressans into World Cup 9.
[Irafma's goal against Soviet Haaregrad] Not to mention this last-minute winner.
[Irafma's 95th-minute goal against Kaza X-Teem on the last day of last season] And though some might not like to be reminded, there's always this one. Now, it seems, Irafma, at 34, is thinking of the end.
[Irafma at press conference] I have decided that the rigours of international football may prove excessive in the long run for me to meet my other demands to Quarua Lakeside and my increasing humanitarian work. As a result, World Cup Ten will be my last.
[Presenter outside Lakeside Arena] This marks the end of an era. Irafma's absence could prove almost impossible to compensate for - even at 34, he remains the unquestioned star of the Progressan team. The future could be gloomy for Progressan football, but Irafma's retirement will come just as the current band of youngsters inspired by his play - Rigondo Ramatta, Futeri Cotaga, Niaq Lianwiay, Stitia Zurrat and most of all Craita Weseydal - come to maturity. James Burn
"In todays sports news the national team for the Big Yard of Dead Man began training today after missing out on 4 World Cups due to the losses they suffered in World Cup 4 and 5. Manager Michael Kernaghan has been sacked and his brother David Kernaghan has taken command of the squad. Our correspondent Kim Mason had a chat with the new manager earlier"

Kim
"Mr Kernaghan, do you feel you can win the World Cup this time after the success this team had in the 3rd World Cup?"

David
"Well I'm not going to get my hopes up and I am not going to lie to myself or my players that we can definately win, but um...I think we can at least get to the Quarter Finals. I think that is the least that we can do. I believe we can qualify and pass our group stages ok"

Kim
"What changes have you made to your squad?"

David
"Well after World Cup 5 I looked at the younger players in the country and I found some remarkable talent (Note!) And I brought in a lot of this younger talent into the team. They have been very successful at club level and I just hope they can do the same on the international pitch"

Kim
"How did you feel when you were offered the position of manager here"

David
"I was thrilled really. I mean I had won the Premier Division in the previous season as well as the Association cup for the second time and its an honour to be here"

Kim
"Who do you most fear in the tournament"

David
*Laughs* "Um well the previous tournament winners obviously but um...basically any team that is far above us in the rankings. I saw that our team is ranked 100 in the KPB rankings and that was put up after World Cup 9. So for an absence of 4 World Cups I still think that is good. And we just put forward a bid to enter the 11th World Cup so the only way is up"

Kim
"Mr Kernaghan thank you very much for your time. Back to the studio"

James
"Thank you Kim. As we can see here the team was in training for the upcoming qualifying round, even though the groups haven't been drawn yet. The newest talent in the squad includes Ryan Mc Greevy, National leagues top scorer and his strike partner Peter Mc Getrick. Stephen Mc Kenna and Geoffrey Burton also two new additions to the squad as full backs. Ciaran Conway and Matt Galway remain in the squad as the center midfields. Chris Murray on the left wing is a new entry as is Adam Faloona at right back and Gavin Smart in left back position and finally Michael Ennis in the right Wing."

Earl Warren
"Well thats it for this evening. James will be back later tonight for full coverage of the sport for the day including Dead Man's preperations for the upcoming World Cup. Good night"

TBF LOOSE OUT TO 2 LATE STRIKES

Two late strikes sent TBF a loss to World Champions Europa Britannia. TBF thought they had the lead after Laurence Wellden gave a great pass to Alan Belmore who was about 20 yards off the goal. He shook the back of the net with a wonder-strike that only he could produce! Then the Audioslavian Linesman (Who most defiantly was not sober) ruled it offside, Alan was outraged. EB moved forwards though with <number 7> hitting the bar from a free kick. The game was marred with injury for the return of Dorminian Rovers midfielder Kshitz Ghandi who had to be strechered off just before the break.
After half-time Europa Britannia just let shot after shot onto the Belmorian goal. They narrowly missed 7 times in the space of half an hour hitting the crossbar thrice, the post thrice and the angle once. On the counter attack however TBF made good progress with Alan Belmore missing the most clear-cut of opportunities after Goshawk crossed the ball over the keepers head, Alan blasted the ball wide of an open goal. But on the 87th minute <number 11> scored a wonder goal from just behind the halfway line. <Number 11> just sidestepped the defending midfielders which caught Edwards’s completely off guard. TBF did not give up hope with Parkinson heading the ball onto the post from a corner. However sloppy play from Alex Dungate gave away a penalty in the final seconds of the game. He also received his second yellow card resulting in a sending off in the most thrilling game of TBF's history. However <number 10> calmly placed the ball over the keepers diving body and with that the match ended.

Crosses it, powerful header! 1-0 Liverpool England! Paul Dussis! And TBF restart. Wellden for TBF. On the left flank, crosses it in, Goshawk is there! Hits the bar, and is defelcted out by Hearne for the corner!
~5th minute~
JH: Wellden. With the corner, Alan Belmore! ONE-ALL! All in the space of two minutes and thirty six seconds! Cannon with the restart. A shot from the halfway line. Finds Blackmore. Slips it on to Christopher, offside.
~7th minute~
JH: Cannon. Still going. He is thirty yards out. Cannon! CANNON!!!!! GOAL! From 30 yards, Caddy Cannon has hit a shot well enough to go in! Wonder what Nif (if you can remember Cannon-Nif goings on) is thinking about that shot, brilliant! Alan Belmore gets the ball with the restart. Goshawk, from close range! Wow, amazing! 2-2 inside eight minutes!
~Half Time~
JH: Halftime from TBF, 2-2.
~89th minute~
JH: It is still scoreless, and we go into silver goal extra time if it is still level. Alan Belmore with the freekick. Belmore! Hits the post!
~Full Time~
JH: We now face silver goal extra time. Here's how this will work: We have 15 minutes of stoppage time. If at the end of the 15 minutes it is still level, we will have another 15 minutes of extra time. If either side takes the lead, the match will go on until the end of that period of extra time, during which the other team can equalise. If not, we face penalty kicks.
~100 minutes~
JH: Remember that Alex Dungate is banned for this match. Dussis now. Goshawk takes it away. Belmore's in there, Alan Belmore gets it... from 10 yards! GOAL! With 5 minutes left in this period of ET TBF lead! Drama!
~105 minutes~
JH: And the visitors are silenced. There goes the final whistle! TBF have won it!

World Cup X groups drawn
Oglethorpian Wonderteam prepares for its seventh World Cup

By Bill Christmas

GIANT ZUCCHINI (BT) -- World Cup officials from Giant Zuchinni and One Red Dot, hosts of World Cup X have drawn and released groups for World Cup X qualifying. The Oglethorpian Wonderteam finds itself in group five. Qualifying groups this time around are made up of nine nations a piece. The group looks like this:

[code:1:7604f35542]
Qualifying Group 5

Grigala
Haraki (15)
NASTIC 2 (60)
Senoj
SPARTEN
Rejistania (38)
Irrevilentsdom
Oglethorpia (5)
Nikea (31)

[/code:1:7604f35542]

The Oglethorpian Wonderteam, top-seeded in group five, ranked 5th in the world finds itself in a group mostly unknown to the Oglethorpian squad, save for Haraki and Nikea.

Oglethorpia has faced Haraki on two occasions; in Oglethorpia's first Cup, World Cup 4 in the first round; this match ended in a victory. Oglethorpia once again faced Haraki in the second round of World Cup IX, and again came out victorious, the record standing at 2-0-0. Haraki, equally a veteran team as Oglethorpia and its Wonderteam is poised to make up for its past losses in World Cup X qualifying, the 2nd seeded squad in group five, second to only Oglethorpia.

Oglethorpia's Wonderteam has also faced Nikea once, this match ending in a 3-nil victory. Nikea is 3rd seeded in group five, and looks to make a statement in qualifying with a fine preformance.

Here's to the Oglethorpian Wonderteam continuing their fine form against Haraki and Nikea in World Cup X qualifying.

Amalgamated Stadium given a 'clean-bill-of-health'
The pitch that served in World Cup 8 has been revamped for World Cup X play

By Dwight Hamilton

OGLETHORPIA (BT) -- Today, Amalgamated Stadium, in Sheffingham, Porlamar officially opened, with a 'clean-bill-of-health' from the Association of Futebol. Formerly known as Kuruma Stadium, the pitch that served a great deal of use in World Cup 8, hosted by Oglethorpia soon fell into disrepair following the conclusion of World Cup 8.

But millions later, and a small name change, Amalgamated Stadium is now a state-of-the-art futebol center.

The stadium hosts a fully revitalized seating arrangement, newly planted and cultivated pitch, and wholly re-outfitied plumbing fixtures.

"It's a beautiful stadium," said Amalgamated Inc. CEO Hugh Brown. "It's hard to believe they didn't use it eight years." When it was known as Kuruma Stadium, it seated 90,000; at current date, Amalgamated Stadium seats 118,000 spectators.

During World Cup X qualifying, Amalgamated Stadium will host all of the Oglethorpian Wonderteam's home matches before the World Cup moves to Giant Zucchini and One Red Dot in the first round.

The HFA to-day announced that they had finally agreed a new contract with Jarvis Smith, and that he would continue as manager of the national side through WC's 10 and 11.
As the announcment was made, Peter Parks, the HFA Chairman was attending the draw for WCX in Giant Zucchini.

Akbarland (51)
Liverpool England (2)
Commerce Heights (23)
Pavesia
EL CID THE HERO
The Dragonian Empire (57)

"Will just go out there and do our best!"

OCC: Should Haraki not be on the same ranking as Halfassed 4points GF 5 GA 6.

Qualilfying for World Cup 10 About to Begin
38 Special Stadium, Sten, Snub Nose 38 Remington Grey

The Minister of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages hosted a gathering at 38 Special Stadium today to watch the Groups for World Cup 10 drawn on wide screen tv. Present were the Commissioner of the Snub Nose 38 Football Association (SN38FA) Durinda Face, with her Executive and Administrative Staff, the Management Team of the Snub Nose 38 Hooligans, the current Hooligans, as well as quite a few past Hooligans. Also attending were the Minister of Finance and Board Games, the Minister of Justice and Real Estate, the Minister of Health, Mining and Obscure Rituals, the Minister of Picking Numbers Out of a Hat, and the Minister of Statistics, Other Totally Useless Information and Band Aids. It was rumored that the Minister of Super Secret Sleuthery was there, but nobody saw him.

Also present was someone who would give her name only as "Margaret".

The draw took place in the Giant Zucchini National Stadium. Press from around the world were on hand for the draw. Mr Skuee, Minister of Sports and Development of Giant Zucchini, put his hand into the bowl to draw the groups for qualifying. After about half an hour, the entire draw was complete. There will be ten groups of nine sides each, with the top 3 in each group qualifying for the World Cup 10 (WCX) tournament itself. A listing of all the groups will be published in the sports section of tomorrows' Scuttlebutt, and can also be found on line at the WCC WCX site.

For now, though, we will just say that the Hooligans were drawn into Group 1. Here's how the Group looks:

Qualifying Group 1
Snub Nose 38 (6)
Larkinia
Ariddia (20)
East Spaam (33)
A nation
Sensual Products (63)
Evisceratomatoes (74)

World Cup 10 Group Draws Announced
Lions Drawn into Group 7

GIANT ZUCCHINI (PNC) -- The group draws for the tenth World Cup were completed today, and Bedistan finds itself in Group Seven:

Qualifying Group 7:
Bedistan (4)
Dennisov (14)
Dark Outcasts ( 28 )
LordSquall (47)
SterlingIce (61)
Kamakaza
Kerla
New Montreal States
Oilermania

"Hey, I like it," says new team captain Chuck Mitchell, who will be playing goalkeeper for the Lions this time around. "Looks pretty easy; past Dennisov I don't see any significant threats. Heck, besides Dark Outcasts, who the hell are these other teams?"

That final sentiment was echoed by manager Gene Barber. "I don't know who any of these teams are! I want some flavor in my qualifying group! Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait till qualification is over."

The Lions, ranked fourth in the world, are the highest-seeded in the group. "Fourth?" commented Secretary of Sports and Games Stephen Rogers. "When did that happen? Last time I checked, all three proposed ranking systems put us at number two. Guess the NSWCC didn't get one passed quickly enough...drat."

Qualifying this time will be longer than ever before, at sixteen games (assuming we play both home and away). With an odd number of teams, though, it will actually require eighteen days of matches.

We will provide you with more information as it comes.

[OOC: I seem to have been drawn into the most boring of the ten groups, though I'd say Group 10 is a close second...my condolences to Iansisle. Ah well, only 18 matchdays till the Cup proper... ;)]
Tanah Burung
26-11-2003, 16:10
Tanah Burung coach Bi Kikere pronounced herself "cautiously optimistic" after the qualifying draw held in Giant Zucchini. The Crocodiles have been drawn in Group 2, where they are the third seed.

Qualifying Group 2:
The Lowland Clans (43)
Fradustanis
Canadian Power Trip
Busby (17)
Lemmitania ( 8 )
Tanah Burung (24)
Agnosticium
Belmorian Scandinavia (66)
Stealth zerbert

Lemmitania, also known as Curse Land, is the class of this group. The Crocodiles have a 1-1 lifetime record against the Lemmings. Lemmitania also features prominently in the religious life of Tanah Burung, where the 24-Hour Church of Gil remains influential. Fans hope the removal of the hellmouth from Lemmington to Gilmeecia will improve the Crocodiles' chances.

Perennial qualifiers Busby are also expected to go through, with The Lowland Clans the best-placed to challenge Tanah Burung for the thrid spot. Then there is Belmorian Scandinavia. "Cripes, more Belmores," said Bi Kikere. "Now that's a match i really want to win."

Little is known of the unranked teams in this group. Crocodiles management is currently seeking funds for a scouting trip to these countries, but a cash crunch at home makes it unlikely. One thing is certain: with groups this large, the road to qualification will be a long and gruelling one.

(noted and accepted Bedistan ;))

From page 2D of the Ianapalis Star-Tribune:

World Cup X Approaches
Coach Lord Riveran of the Ians says his side “still needs work.”

IANAPALIS, Iansisle -- It is an unusually sunny day on the South Shield, and a small crowd has gathered to watch as the Iansisle Ians, that squad who will soon be taking on the world in the pursuit of glory for King and Commonwealth, play a practice game against Westergate of the Shieldian Football League.

Despite several months of practice under the steady guidence of Coach Lord Riveran, one can tell that quite a few holes still exist in the Ians’ attack. The communication between the midfielders and the strikers was in particular most disappointing, allowing Westergate’s supposedly less talented XI to dominate play on their end. While the game ended in a 1-1 draw, with forward Leonard Flaherty striking for the Ians’ score, there was no mistaking the air of disappointment that hung over them after the match.

“I’d really hoped for better from this side,” Lord Riveran was quoted as saying, “The World Cup is almost here, and I can’t say we’re quite ready.” The head coach shrugged. “With the amount of talent we have on this team, we should have been able to dominate a mid-table team like Westergate.”

On the topic that the World Cup was approaching, the fact that qualifying groups had already been drawn, with Iansisle in Group Ten.

“I must say that I’m happy with our draw,” Lord Riveran admitted. “[12th ranked] Squornshelous will be tough, of course, and I’ve heard good things about [27th ranked] Aquilla and [21st ranked] Oddslavo. However, until now we simply haven’t had the scouting resources to really look at most of the lower ranked and our fellow unranked clubs. Now that we know how to concentrate on...” In what seems to be a habit of his, Riveran ended the sentence with a shrug. The question of where he thought Iansisle would end up when everything was said and done in the World Cup was then put to Riveran, who had been meticulously avoiding that query all day.

“I can’t say I know,” he replied after a moment’s hesitation. “We’ve a lot of untapped talent on this team and the best draw we could hope for, but the communication simply isn’t there. I hope I’m not being hasty in predicting we finish either seventh or eighth in our group.”

The news that even the head coach expects nothing better of his squad than to ‘show the flag’ may not be comforting news to sports fans across the Commonwealth, but to a country born and bred upon athletic failures, it certainly is not unexpected tidings.

Cockbill Street drawn with tough opponents

The draw for the Football World Cup was announced yesterday, and Cockbill Street was drawn with some pretty famous names of world football, among them previous year's quarter-finalist Snub Nose 38, East Spaam, who won their qualifying group in style, and Ariddia, who finished third in World Cup IX. Two further newcomers to international football, Larkinia and A nation, and some veterans, namely Sensual Products, Evisceratomatoes, and The Weegies, complete the group.

Qualifying Group 1:
Snub Nose 38 (6)
Larkinia
Ariddia (20)
East Spaam (33)
A nation
Sensual Products (63)
Evisceratomatoes (74)
Cockbill Street
The Weegies (50)

Manager Ironfoundersson said it would be tough and expected our team to win a maximum of four games - "The opposition is very tough, but we will try our best to improve our ranking and seeding for the next World Cups," he commented.

Secretary of Sports and Games Dies

NEW BRUNSWICK, NS -- Secretary of Sports and Games Stephen Rogers was found dead at his home in New Brunswick this morning. The cause of death has not been determined, but it is likely that it was simply due to natural causes.

"It scared the living hell out of me," commented his wife after police arrived on the scene. "He seemed to be perfectly fine last night, and then this morning..." She trailed off.

The 68-year-old man has served as the head of the Department of Sports and Games since its inception in 2004. No successor has been named yet, though there are rumors that former Bedistan Lions national football team coach Jim Parker may get the position.

World Cup X Groups Drawn
Pandas in Group 5
by Markinen Markenel

GIANT ZUCCHINI(NP) - In a new group design, the Nikean Pandas have been drawn into group 5 along with 8 other teams who are hoping to qualify for World Cup 10.

The national side has only played a match against one team in the group, Olgethorpia, which ended in a 3-0 drubbing of the Pandas. Nikea looks to erase the memory of that match with a possible victory in qualifying.

The rest of the group is relatively unknown to Nikea. The other seeded teams (Haraki, Rejistania, and NASTIC 2) have all played before, yet Nikea has only sporadic video footage of the teams. Four unranked teams round out the group, and Nikean FA President Yeskerin Orsentel seems confident that our national side will qualify.

"I'm pretty happy with our group," he said following the draw. "We do quite well against teams that are ranked higher than us, and we are hoping that we can get the maximum amount of points from most of the teams in the group. We only see Oglethorpia, Haraki, and Rejistania posing problems to us, but NASTIC 2 may be in the race. We'll see how things go."

The Nikean roster has changed somewhat with the retirement of some key players, but Orsentel is sure that the players chosen to replace them will be more than ready for the task.

"We have a lot of depth, which really helps our position. We can call on almost anyone to come up and play just as well as the man he's replacing."

With the elimination of SF Miserias from the Champions League, all national players are able to commit all their time to training in the offseason.

From the Daily Kangaroo:

PROGRESSAN ROUTE LOOKS MANAGEABLE

Kaze Progressa's qualifying group for World Cup X appears less challenging than some feared. The top side in the group is 10th-ranked Kingsford; Spaam, in long-term decline after the great split with East Spaam, are the pick of the rest, though Keyshona and Eauz will fancy their chances. Three new nations and Dead Man - back after a long absence from international competition - complete the group.

Faiwe Irafma, speaking at a press conference, said 'Compared to what we could have got - indeed, what we did get last time and get through - this is a group we should be able to qualify from. But that will probably curse us.'

Ironically Irafma has been a significant missionary in Kingsford, which is in economic meltdown at present.

Sliponian Loses Friendly to Defending WC Champs 2-1 in ET
But Coach Gansler is Still Optimistic.

RAYTOWN, Sliponia -- On a beautiful day in Raytown the a temperature in the low-to-mid 70s with a cool ocean breeze hitting the town, the whole nation was in rapture as the best Sliponia had to offer played the best Europa Brittania had to offer. With the final result 2-1 with a last second goal as extra time expired by EB, Coach Bob Gansler is very optimistic about the WC XI team.

"Sure, they scored the first and last goals of the game, but those were the only goals we allowed. This national team Sliponian will be bring is looking great. If you consider that in our last world cup, WC VII, EB beat us 4-0, I believe, and now as WCX is ready to begin and WC XI conditioning is almost ready to begin this team is improved a whole lot. We are going to be a fairly young team however, with our only vetran taking the pitch for the last time with our team in WCX; but I've got a sturdy crew with me, and we're looking to go as far as we can. We lost, and though we looked good, there is still work to be done."

'slaves drawn alongside world cup finalists
...and a few other teams

Audioslavia will face WC9 runners-up Ravenspire and world cup stalwarts Svecia in the qualifiers for WC10.

Other teams in group 8 include promising newcomers Citta Acqua, Clearwater, whom the 'slaves defeated home and away in the last world cup qualifiers, and Morawny, Zinkoland, Davii and Dauragons, none of which the 'slaves have heard of before, and will no doubt therefore beat us and knock us out.

Qualifying Group 8:

26-11-2003, 23:55
From the Sikenian daily:
Go, Rejistania!
When the grouping was published, chaos broke out in the headquarter of the RejistaniaFA. Many people searched for world maps or one of the many, contradictory ranking tables. People cheered of not being in a group with the-team-that-was-ranked-25th and that no rejistanian citizen will ever pronounce correctly*. Qualification Group 5 consists of:
Grigala
Irrevilentsdom
Senoj
SPARTEN (all unranked)
NASTIC 2 (60)
Rejistania ( 38 )
Nikea (31)
Haraki (15)
Oglethorpia (5)

Four of the teams are total newbies. Coach Hexen Imdila does not believe in the talk of easy opponents, since "last WC, we belonged to them!" (quote Imdila'he). NASTIC 2 is a known opponent from the Cup of Harmony. The only game Rejistania - Nastic 2 ended 2-0 for the Orange-Blues, Nikea and Haraki are unknown higher-ranked teams. Imdila'he about them: "This games won't be easy, we don't have the bonus of being minnows and not been taken seriously anymore." Finally there is Oglethorpia (pronounce as: O-gel-xor-vi-a), the 'wonderteam' of the last WC. Imdila'he commented: "They are real good. But I think, the game is not lost, before it has begun. We may not have a chance, but we're sure to take them!"

Good luck at all the matches from the editoral staff of the Sikenian Daily!

Bedistan's big mouth makes it unpopular

Nomally placid New Montreal States citizens are now riled up over several disdainful comments made by Bedistan's coaches and players over the draw.

"Load of cocky [people]," said Claude Renoir, a citizen of St-Arsene. "Granted, they are pretty good. But still there should be some respect, no matter how good you get. Brushing off an entire draw like that is just a way to make enemies. I doubt anyone here will forget this."

The Ice Paladin Association has remained silent, seemingly not wishing to dignify this disgraceful affair with any sort of comment.

Ice Paladin reserve midfielder Morris Cuthbert, the charismatic public face of the players, said yesterday at a conference at which the whole team stood behind him on the stage, claimed "We think that Bedistan's comments heading into this tournament are reprehensible. We hope that most Bedistanis are not as cocksure as the few who have been runnning their mouths of late."

It is certain that the Paladin Dome will be packed to greet Bedistan when it arrives at a sate that is yet to be set. And we will also bet that this greeting will be as unfriendly as it gets.

However, perhaps some kind of group rivalry would be a good thing -- that's what livens it up. :P

That's because you haven't played yet. Standard practice is to assign new teams a ranking somewhere below all the rest, usually 150 these days. I don't know what rank GZ and ORD are giving the new teams...

OK, so now we have 2 issues to settle.

1. Eaglets' inclusion into the World Cup.
2. Morawny and Ravenspire.

Now there are various ways to resolve this.

1. Morawny changes qualifying group. If this option is chosen, Morawny and The Dragonian Empire will switch groups, and Eaglets will have to wait another 4 years.

2. Eaglets take the place of Morawny. This can be justified because Morawny was not noted as a puppet. However, we may choose to give Ravenspire the benefit of the doubt.

3. Morawny plays Eaglets in a Pre-qualification Playoff (don't ban me...). If Morawny wins, option 1 is chosen. If Eaglets win, option 2 is chosen.

I'll go for a referendum. Please place your votes.

From the Byrana Sentinel:

Spaam? Again?

This is what coach Renson Davis had to comment after looking over Group 6. According to our record keepers, this is atleast the second time we've played the "Spaam Superfluous Saharas," according to John Madder from the Athletic Review.

"I feel that this group should provide challenge, filled with nations that have developing fooball programs. Dead Man, a team from the past, was also in that WC4 group with Spaam and Kingsford, who supposedly hosted a cup. Eauz is a french nation that had a good run towards the beginning of qualifying. Kaze Progressa has been rapidly rising through the ranks. It will be a tough qualifying group."

The Athletic Review has provided us with the expected Group 6 outcomes from their experts, as well as other newspapers and gambling service's predictions.

The problem is that Eaglets was removed along with the other puppets and did not sign up again, and that Morawny did not declare itself as a puppet. By resolving it this way, we would be able to come up with a good solution without removing another nation (A nation), especially since both countries we are dealing with are puppets.

Qualifying Group 3:

Europa Brittania (1)

Warnocks Wizards (34)

Just look at the nations, they are all spoiled by capitalism and that is the reason why the rank is not anyhow important. Being the best among nations which still have not left the dark valley of private enterprise does not state anything, because they are bound to fear the superiority of the United Socialist States of USAnia and they are bound to only be ranked behind us!

OOC: USAnia is now a puppet of Rejis, since a friend, who signed this nation up for the WC lost the interest in it. So instead of letting the nation simply cease, I (Rejis) will RP the next matches and never sign USAnia up again.

Don't be insulted by this RPs, it is all ment ironically.

No rosters?
Group 5 roster sheets largely absent

By Bill Christmas

OGLETHORPIA (BT) -- Football analysts have scoured Oglethorpian Association of Football records at least four times over, and have made visits to all the nations of group 5; and still, they have come up with only two rosters.

Oglethorpia's Wonderteam roster (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2063973#2063973) and Rejistania's World Cup team roster (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2200754#2200754).

The mystery of the missing rosters has yet to be solved; or investigated, for that matter. Oglethorpians are confused that only two of nine teams have actually published rosters. "I remember Nikea was one of those active teams in the last Cup. We got tons of newspapers from that nation. I don't know where their roster went; or for that matter, that crazy Keldas Quacky newspaper, or whatever it was called," said one random Oglethorpian.

Analysts still hold out hope that more rosters from nations participating in group 5 will come out of the woodwork.

But with World Cup X qualification already scheduled to begin in a few short weeks, it seems the opponents of Oglethorpia's Wonderteam and their players will largely go unknown and anonymous.

Viujusti training field

Outside a small village, on one of Ariddia's smaller islands. It's raining slightly, and has been for several hours now, but that seems to deter neither the players gathered on the field nor the small group of reporters gazing in and poking their cameras through the old, half rusted fence.

In the days of the first World Cup, stadiums through Ariddia glittered in the sunlight, a dazzling display fit to welcome sport's envoys from the far corners of the world. Even then, it had been a strain on an ailing economy. These days, the goverment has little money to spend on renovating training grounds - even for such a nationally acclaimed team as this one.

And this is a team that has brought together men and women from a single nation but from rival - some might say enemy - states. The Ariddian Cold War is over in theory, officially, but not in the hearts of all the people. "Red" Ariddians playing with their sundered fellows from Limea - or unable to do so: that, perhaps more than the team's actual performance, is what reporters want to see. The team has become a symbol of the governments' reunification policies, and its success or failure will weigh heavily on the success or failure of peace and understanding in the Isles.

Andes, from West Ariddia, shoots, the ball lifting into the air with a spray of mud, just past al-Jibai's fingers and into the net. Splat. The leaping goalkeeper scrambles up from the wet grass. He exchanges a glance with his teammate, who gives a slight smile. Condescending, or comradship? The reporters will be eager to speculate on that small gesture.

The twenty-three players on the field - twenty from the communist Ariddias, three from the West - pay them little attention. Divided in ideology as they may be, they do share one common goal.

When it comes to playing for the Cup, they will share the same opponents. Whether they win or lose, they will have no choice but to do so together...

Svecia
02-12-2003, 00:38
Ever since failing to make it out of the Group stage for the second tournament in a row, Svecia is looking to go back to the glory days of the early World Cup's when Karl Goree and Matt Fijts lead their team to two top four finishes. Last years team, after having a rough run through qualifying and a horrible finish in the group stage, went on to host a tournament within their own region. After being ranked first starting the tournament, the Lightning was knocked out of a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals when tie breaking regulations were used to determine their group's second place finisher. Svecia came out on the short end of the stick because of a 2-2 tie in the first round against a team seeded 13th in the region.

After the poor performances, the head coach retired, saying his doctors had diagnosed him with heart problems and he needed to alleviate stress from his life. The new head coach, Tim Sweers, coached the voetbal team from Svensson University to the Svecian Collegiate Championship for the third time in a row this past season. His legacy there is unprecedented, with an overall record of 179-38-20. Already he has implemented a new formation for the Svecian team, moving players around and utilizing the strengths of the newest members, among them the star forward, 19-year-old Francisco Cardini, an immigrant to the country two years ago when he moved here to start college. The old formation, a 4-4-2, was not working according to Sweers, who worked with the Svecian national team for a while during the last world cup. His new method, a 3-5-2, has been the mainstay of the Svensson team for Sweers' entire career there. He hopes to apply his magic at Svensoon to the newly reorganized Svecian team.

After failing to make the Second round for the second straight World Cup, Svecia hopes to make another run at the coveted championship, which up until now has failed to make itself reachable for the perennial power.
