Introduction

I have noticed a lot of people new to this game being confused as to where they should go once they have created their nation. Many probably choose to stay in whichever Pacific in which they spawned or as I myself did, go to a few regions at random before settling on a reasonable one, not really having any idea of which regions out there match their interests. Some create their own, but often this is a study in isolation - around 40% of regions in NationStates contain only one nation. Then there are the endless recruitment telegrams new nations receive. With over 11,000 regions from which to choose and not much of a search function, it is daunting indeed.

I would like to make the process of choosing a suitable region easier. This directory will tell you which regions fit into which categories of politics, theme or method of game-playing, which regions are heavily involved in the UN, which regions have many members who role-play, and how many members each region had when I began to compile this directory. Hopefully, I will be able to update the information once every month or so.

Explanatory notes

Note 1: My time is limited, so only regions containing 35+ nations will be included. There are a couple of hundred of these as it is. I will add any regions that subsequently rise above this mark and demonstrate stability. Any regions which are included and then decline in numbers for a long period of time will be removed. As this is not intended to be an exhaustive list, only these significant regions will be included, with a handful of exceptions which I have decided to make. There is scope for amendments and suggestions, see notes below, but my decision is final.

Note 2: Regions have been placed in categories according to their attitudes and activities, and are often listed under more than one category. The categories in which they are listed, or not, depend on what impression I got by visiting the Region Page, off-site homepages/forums where applicable and searching for Forum threads in which the Founder and/or UN Delegate have been active. Similarly, this is how I assessed their UN and RP involvement (note that I count IC chat on the regional message boards as RP, not just forum activity, and UN activity as regional involvement in UN affairs by means of regional message board, off-site forum and UN Forum discussion). In many cases, I also drew on my personal experiences of the regions in the game.

Note 3: If you are the Founder or UN Delegate of a featured region and wish to inform me of your region's UN or RP activities, or lack thereof, please do so at wave_effect@yahoo.co.uk. Also if you feel you have been left out of a category, or been placed in the wrong one. Helpful corrections and clarifications would make my job easier, as at the moment I am having to research all this by myself, although those of you with detailed Factbook Entries and off-site boards have helped me a great deal. Reports of broken or misdirected links are also welcome. So please, send me any constructive feedback you have.

Note 4: Having said that, unreasonable complaints will not get much of a response. This takes time and effort, and I have had to make a lot of judgements and compromises. By all means point out an error or oversight as described above, but lecturing me on your politics with righteous indignation will help little.

Note 5: Since region sizes change constantly, I am using the numbers taken from the server on 13 December 2003 by Ballotonia of Holland (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_region/region=Holland), whom I wish to thank for providing this infomation. Region sizes will be updated periodically when I have the time. If your region was caught in an embarassingly depleted state, too bad, but you may draw some comfort from the fact that if it is featured, it is 1337.

Note 6: As you will discover soon enough, some regions have a dominant language other than English. Respect that.

Note 7: In attempting to join these regions, you may run into regional password protection. Such policy is unpredictable and cannot be incuded here as a feature. If it happens to you, I suggest sending a telegram to the Founder, UN Delegate or other official in that region.

Note 8: Finally, remember, this is only a very rough guide for players new to the NS World game. Just a quick reference. It is never going to be perfectly accurate. But if I did put UN or RP where they should not be, tell me.

Relax, if the region has 30+ nations, I will examine it as I make my way down the list, and it will be added eventually. However, I cannot contact all the senior officials personally. OK, I have the new numbers here. And you know what? There are so many tiebreaks that all the 30+ nation regions (215 of them) have fitted into the top 80 regions by size. To avoid the ridiculous situation of every region getting a red star, I will increase the threshold from 100th to 70th position. That way, even when there are as many tiebreaks as today, the number of starred regions will be a more exclusive 138, and a truer impression of the top 100. I have a feeling that 9 September was something of an exception in having very few regions being the same size. A minor detail, I suppose, but I hope it makes sense.

Looks like I have my work cut out for me tomorrow.

Uhm, the way rankings are supposed to work is that when there's a tie the numbers skip. Look at the first list I posted in the other thread, where I put in ranking numbers. The Top 100 of regions (in size) ends with those that had 51 nations in it at the time I pulled the stats.

It IS possible for the Top 100 to have more than 100 regions in it when a tie adds a few nations, but this is actually not the case right now. The Top 100 has exactly 100 nations in it.

More specific: Canada and Pacific Army now share the 11th place (with 205 nations each). This means there isn't a 12th position, and thus North America comes in on the 13th place (with 198 nations). Further down the line: since 95th place is a tie between five regions, the Top 100 ends right after that. The 101st place is again a tie between two regions, and after that there's a three-way tie for 103rd place. 106th place however is not a tie, so after that is slot #107, etc...

Regarding password-protected regions, I have been playing that side of the game long enough to understand that password policies change from week to week. Even a generally password-free region sometimes slaps one down for a day or two, or longer, in times of tension. So in far too many cases, the information would be extremely unreliable. I suggest that nations running into password protection telegram one of the regional officials.

Also, Notes 1 and 7 now have key phrases given emphasis in bold.

Why is Lazarus a "feeder/sink"?

Lazarus is a game-created region in which ex-nations are temporarily resurrected for the purpose of a Moderator investigation, and where ex-nations given a second chance or deleted by mistake are resurrected in a more lasting fashion. I included it for completeness.

I assume my region "Pagan" is not going to get on the list, as it only has two members, but I'd like to advertise... if you're a pagan nation, come and join Pagan!

I would like to know how my region, the Middle East, is considered conservative/capitalist, and generally how you class regions into the different categories.

I categorise regions on theme having looked at the following characteristics in the order indicated:

1) Region name

2) World Factbook Entry content

3) Regional message board content

4) Off-site forum content, where applicable

5) The UN Categories of the nations within the region

These indicators are dynamic, but taken together, they usually give an accurate picture. I look out for key words and try to gain an impression of what that region's flavour may be. In many cases, it is obvious, in some, less so.

Also, while I realise that a conservative region may not necessarily be markedly capitalist, there is enough of a correlation to warrant some categories to be blended.

I hope this clarifies a few things. If anyone has any further questions along these lines, please e-mail me.

I just wanted to say thank you. I have spent the last week going through the list of regions one at a time and have only gotten a third of the way finished. This has helped me a great deal. A suggestion: perhaps this guide could be mentioned in the "faq" or "new nations look here first" sections; it might be easier for new players to find it that way.

I have updated all the previous entries to reflect Oct 21 data, with the exception of most of the Omnifarious category, which I will do later. Some regions have crashed out of the list, and so far it seems that no purely technical region crashing regions were large enough that day to make the list, although I have not worked my down the whole thing yet. I might add some for completeness later. However, I also have a huge number of new 30+ nation regions, and comparison with the last two scans provided by Ballotonia suggests a great deal of instability in regions that size. Also, it appears that most of them are unlikely to be of much use in showing newbies the ropes. I am therefore imposing a 35+ cut-off, as it would mean far too much work with me being a Moderator as well.

The update is still in progress, with a couple of dozen regions being added in a few days.

Since the point I was trying to make wasn't quite understood, let me try again: The current list reflects data from *OCTOBER 21*, and TG is still working on adding some regions from that data collection time. Periodically new data is being used. You know this will happen when this is said in the first post.

I'm the person who collects the region list data, sorts it, and hands the top X regionlist over to TG, who then classifies the regions and maintains the published list. The next sampling of the system will be done at some undisclosed time in the future, this does NOT happen every single time TG decides to edit the post to make a necessary modification. This procedure is a lot of work, so this isn't done very often.

Your region is not the only one not listed right now. Some regions now listed will drop out of the list next time, and others will be added.

Finally, I have got around to updating everything. Except for 23 previously not included regions in the range 35-41 nations, but many will have declined by the time the time the next snapshot is taken, so I will leave them out until then.

Hopefully, a further update will be made in the next week or two, as this stuff is already three weeks old. Damn my time constraints.

The region of Thaenor would fall into Steampunk and Fantasy themed. Steampunk can be taken as a form of Sci-Fi as well, but with XIX technologies instead of futuristic ones.

What I tried to do when coming up with this idea is make it so it's NOT like any regular region. See in NS the Delegate goes to the person with the most endorsements, right? Well, in this (region) league of 2 regions, it's not so easy. To have that top nation at the end of the day, you would have to have an increase in your economy, a large population jump, or other nations falling.

As well, the purpose of the game for this league would be to sit on top of region A and try not to drop down. I'm sure this will not be very easy for even the most populated, economy driven nations..

Another difference is that "average" nations will have something to strive for-- to advance to region A and stay in it....

On that note, any of you interested?

Just a suggestion...... although nearly all do, there may be a few regions who would not want to be in this directory, and have a password already as they do not want other people in their region, and may even not want to be bothered with telegrams adking about coming to the region. there should be a way of letting these regions remain nameless. maybe all delegate could be telegramed regarding this, and asked to reply if they do not wish to be listed, this may save some nations a lot of hassle.

Unforunately, doing that would give me a lot of hassle. :P

Hey TG...know you're really busy and everything, but at the next update could you add a couple things to Nasicournia's listing? No rush whatsoever (I'm pretty sure we'd live even if it never got changed lol).

Nasicournia is a defender region (as you correctly have us listed)but we're also pretty active in the UN. Our members submit proposals, and I as delegate vote on issues and support proposals.

Also, we too have a recruitment region new members must pass through. It's called the Nasicournian Borderlands and has been pretty active itself for the last couple of months.

Anyhow, I'd appreciate it if you could add these things to our listing whenever you next update this thread. Thank you!

51+ nations. Out of 7000 plus regions, that is more work than most of us care to put into this kind of project, only to see that it is shortlived and needs to be redone only too quickly.

How long does it actually take you to do all this, TG?

An hour or two a day, on a few days spread over two weeks. I suppose it would take me the best part of a working day if I was to do it all at once. This time round is particularly annoying, as there are 62 more new regions to add, and I have to look at all of them and decide where to put them. Quite a few dropped out, but even with the threshold lifted, lots more have qualified because of the influx of new players.

EDIT: 26 regions left to add now, in the range 35-42 nations. Man, I'm tired.

Could you move Yggdrasil to the list of Fantasy-themed Regions? It was originally founded based on the Yggdrasil of the "Ah! My Goddess" manga, but is now starting to get a bit centered around Norse mythology in general.

Protestwarrior region has 35 nations. The minimum is 35 right? If not...my bad. :)

btw. how often are the region members updated ?

region Poland has 44 members i the directory , the author has been messaged several times that we changed to 76 ... and it was a long time ago ... does the members update take place periodically or we were just forgotten ;-) ?

The directory is based on stats which are taken periodically. After that, it does take some time to update all the numbers.

A new poll was taken earlier today, and will lead to a modification of the directory whenever the directory maintainer will get to it. Do NOT send in a note whenever your regional population changes, as this will have to be ignored. (it would lead to the data being taken at different times, and as such not be representative of the time of polling anymore)

Might i add...it think that it would be real cool if you added if the nations had a website...or forum....or even a world map about the region and all the nations.

Right, everything that was in there before is now up to date. Any suggested changes to a region's UN or RP status are very welcome.

There are a lot of new regions which will be going in, but I will do that later. Up to 65 new regions should be added to the list soon.

As the Current Consul of the Meritocracy (of which the region of 'The New Meritocracy' as you have us listed is a part of), I must ask that you please put UN Free rather than Anti-UN beside our region.

We're not 100% sure if this is whats happening but it seems that our being refered to as Anti-UN has managed to attract to use rather....uber-right wing 'discrimatory' groups that we would rather not be associated with.

If its not too much trouble we would highly appreciated it.

I wonder if it is possibly to add one category. Space and space traveling or some thing like that. I have discovered it is many regions that are involved in that. If I may add WWSeti is one of them. On the 13 of Dec we have many more then what required to be in the list. The list I think is a wonderful idea and I like to bow my head in respect. Great Job!!

i am the founder of the quareling states. we have just passed the 60 mark and are still growing. i founded the region about a month ago and we have steadily increased in numbers ever since. please add us to the list. we would best fit in the omnifarious heading. we are active in the UN but as of now we are not active in RP. thank you!!
