Ideological Voting Blocs

08-09-2003, 23:51
Is it possible to search for like-minded nations to form idelological voting blocs within the U.N.? For example, if a bunch of New York Times Democracies decided to get together and push their Markets Uber alles agenda, could they have a quick means of getting ahold of each other? Perhaps handling UN categories like regions, where you can click to see other countries that share your point of view.

Maybe you should just move to the same region

Many regions are organized for these purposes. For instance, the region of "Armageddon" is, according to their factbook entry, committed to being a conservative voice in the UN. Various other regions, "1 George Bush too many", for instance, do just the opposite.

There are plenty of unique regions as well...There's an Exclusive Capitalizt Zone, as well as a region made entirely of right-wing countries with tiny governments.

Not that I advocate the near 'economic war' that these groups conduct, I feel the need to post for the other side (fair and ballanced you know ).

There are Socialist minded groups, but the only two I can think of right now are "Socialist Alliance" and "AntiCapitalist Alliance".

Reread the opening post: CoOpera wants to know how to find like-minded nations.

Yes, there are such organizations and regions, and yes, CoOpera should move into them...

...but how does one find them? That's the question.

"Think about it for a moment."

Well, that would entail making nation/region types & categories, and creating an interface to search for them. In short, it sounds like something that would not be implemented until NS2.

Someone should take the time to restart the NationStates White Pages.

I had been thinking along these lines, assessing all 9,500 regions and grouping the significant ones into broad categories such as Griefer, Anti-Griefer, Communist, Hippie Commune, some Sci-fi and Fantasy categories, etc. I use other puppets to play the NS game outside the forums quite a lot, and remember how difficult it was to know where to go when I started, people tend to have some idea of what they are looking for, but no way to get even a basic list. So maybe some easy-to-understand list could be of use, the more significant regions are lasting so it won't go totally out of date during the first month.

I am not aware of any existing project of this type, so would there be any demand? In theory, I am not doing much next week . . .

There definitely is a demand for such a thing. My suggestion would be to stick to the largest regions. Say, only those with 50+ nations in it, and which show signs of reasonable recent activity.

If you're serious about taking on this project, I can generate a list of the largest regions for you.

You'll find a few more on Ballotonia's helpful list, including numbers 17 and 89. Also Urbanites (29) are broadly progressive. For that bijou socialist experience there is the small but perfectly formed Old School Atlantic.

The one in bold, AoSS, is clearly the home of true socialism - but we are all comrades in the struggle... :D

Yeah the News Broadcast page is http://networkradio.proboards21.com/index.cgi and that is aplace to advertise, but it is not overly traffic filled at present. I agree, some sort of easy to navigate system woul dbe wonderful. And it might not be nec to wait to NS2. As Cog suggested, it is possible that players might create something for this purpose. There are a lot dedicated to this site, and somethign to easily search would be awesome.

It is nice that there is a place people can advertise. But I want to do something which is more of a categorised listing, rather than an advertising board. A searchable off-site thingy is one idea, but it would be far easier to implement, not to mention access, (which is the most important thing), if it was simply in the form of a sticky in the General Forum, or maybe the NationStates Forum would be more appropriate. So if a newbie knows (s)he wants to join a region with a socialist, perhaps communist ethic, (s)he could scroll down and get a list from which to choose, perhaps compare a few regions, rather than opting for whichever one (s)he happens to come across first.

Anyway, that is what I have decided to attempt, and if enough people would like to see it happen, I would also welcome Moderator comments, then I will put up the result, see how it goes.

I am thinking of having a size cut-off of twenty nations and a message board activity cut-off of five days. Also a star for the major regions, ie most of the top hundred, a mention of whichever allies any regions specify in their UN Factbook entries, and the number of nations in each region at the time of compilation. I feel this would give players enough information to do some research and make an informed choice as to their new home.

Some broad categories for your consideration:

Anarchists
Anti-Griefers
Capitalists
Comminists / Socialists
"Evil"
Fantasy themed
Griefers
Hippie Communes
Liberals
News
Primary Feeders and Sinks
Real world nation/region themed
Satanists / Wiccans (no real connection implied)

So, comments, suggestions?

Hmmm. I'm not entirely sure. Let's see if a Mod comments. If not, just post it in NationStates and let them move it if needed :)

There's about 400 regions with 20+ nations. Are you sure about doing all that work?!? Even the top 100 is a lot of work. Also keep in mind that things change. A region with 55 nations dropping below the 50 mark will still have enough nations in it to matter on a worldwide scale. If a region drops below 20, it could be terminal for the region! Not that there aren't active regions with less than 20 nations in it, but it's a percentage issue. Many won't be worth bothering with due to inactivity. And you've got to draw the line somewhere.

How about you start with the top 100, and let me know when and if you're ready for the next 100 in the list? :)

Instead of 'griefers' and 'anti-griefers', perhaps you meant invaders vs. anti-invaders?

Also, please distinguish between RPG and non-RPG regions and alliances.

I would obviously have to update it every month, to clean out the failed regions, which will be a lot of work. You are correct, maybe a 30 or 40 nation cut-off? The top hundred go down to the mid-40s, so it would be a more managable 200 regions or so.

How about you start with the top 100, and let me know when and if you're ready for the next 100 in the list? :)

Sure, no problem, I will see how it goes, make up my mind where to draw the line once I get the superpowers of the way.

Well, that's why I chose "griefers" over "invaders". There are several regions I can name which are pure griefer regions, whose activities are nothing to do with forum RP. Perhaps "Region-crashers" will be a less controversial term, I do not wish to offend anyone. As for those who invade or defend as part of recognised RP, they do need to be clearly distinguished. For example, The Heartland's wars usually have an RP component, while Blue Moon do region-crashing as a purely technical maneuver. They will be in different categories.

OK, I am going to start work on the region directory here in this post. I will edit it as I go along, and hopefully it should be done in a few days. If people want to make suggestions, that's fine by me. When it is done, I will post it in NationStates and see how it goes. If any Moderator then feels it is worthy of a sticky, I would be eternally grateful, as it would save me from having to bump it every couple of days.

Unofficial NationStates Region Directory

Introduction

I have noticed a lot of people new to this game being confused as to where they should go once they have created their nation. Many probably choose to stay in whichever Pacific in which they spawned or as I myself did, go to a few regions at random before settling on a reasonable one, not really having any idea of which regions out there match their interests. Some create their own, but often this is a study in isolation - nearly 40% of regions in NationStates contain only one nation. Then there are the endless recruitment telegrams new nations receive. With over 9,300 regions from which to choose and not much of a search function, it is daunting indeed.

I would like to make the process of choosing a suitable region easier. This directory will tell you which regions fit into which categories of politics, theme or method of game-playing, which regions are heavily involved in the UN, which regions have many members who role-play, and how many members each region had when I began to compile this directory. Hopefully, I will be able to update the information once every month or so.

Note 1: My time is limited, so only regions containing 30+ nations will be included. There are a couple of hundred of these as it is. I will add any regions that subsequently rise above this mark and demonstrate stability. Any regions which are included and then decline in numbers for a long period of time will be removed. As this is not intended to be an exhaustive list, only these significant regions will be included, with a handful of exceptions which I have decided to make. There is scope for amendments and suggestions, see notes below, but my decision is final. Already, three or four of the huge regions below have dropped out of the list and will be removed soon, so you can imagine what problems I would have with small regions.

Note 2: Regions have been placed in categories according to their attitudes and activities, and are often listed under more than one category. The categories in which they are listed, or not, depend on what impression I got by visiting the Region Page, off-site homepages/forums where applicable and searching for Forum threads in which the Founder and/or UN Delegate have been active. Similarly, this is how I assessed their UN and RP involvement (note that I count IC chat on the regional message boards as RP, not just forum activity). In many cases, I also drew on my personal experiences of the regions in the game.

Note 3: If you are the Founder or UN Delegate of a featured region and wish to inform me of your region's UN or RP activities, or lack thereof, please do so at wave_effect@yahoo.co.uk. Also if you feel you have been left out of a category, or been placed in the wrong one. Helpful corrections and clarifications would make my job easier, as at the moment I am having to research all this by myself, although those of you with detailed Factbook Entries and off-site boards have helped me a great deal. Reports of broken or misdirected links are also welcome. So please, send me any constructive feedback you have.

Note 4: Having said that, unreasonable complaints will not get much of a response. This takes time and effort, and I have had to make a lot of judgements and compromises. By all means point out an error or oversight as described above, but lecturing me on your politics with righteous indignation will help little.

Note 5: Since region sizes change constantly, I am using the numbers taken from the server on 9 September 2003 by Ballotonia of Holland (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_region/region=Holland), whom I wish to thank for providing this infomation. Region sizes will be updated periodically when I have the time, next update within a couple of days. If your region was caught in an embarassingly depleted state, too bad, but you may draw some comfort from the region size distribution graphs at the bottom (to be added). If your region is featured, it is l33t.

Note 6: As you will discover soon enough, some regions have a dominant language other than English. Respect that.

Note 7: At the moment, only the top 100, some lesser and a few miscellaneous regions have been added. The rest (another 100 or so) will be added a few at a time over the next week or two, as I work my way down the list in decreasing order of size. Patience please, this is only half done but I have a degree to do.

Note 8: Finally, remember, this is only a very rough guide for players new to the NS World game. Just a quick reference. It is never going to be perfectly accurate. But if I did put UN or RP where they should not be, tell me.

Tactical Grace, you've undertaken a truly noble and herculean task. We bow to you. http://ofp.info/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/worship.gif

Our region doesn't really fit neatly into any of your proposed categories (we'd actually prefer Omnifarious) but I suppose we could squeeze in under, although some of our members are anything but . . .

For example, The Heartland's wars usually have an RP component, while Blue Moon do region-crashing as a purely technical maneuver.

Sorry TG to start an odd conversaion, but I have seen you useing this description a lot. And, well, I don't so much take umbrage with it as I don't think it is technicaly accurate.

I am not standing up for the BM, I don't know 'em. But I do know me. And I am an invader, more then in just a technical sense. When I go into a region as a raider I do RP. I don't actually take over any regions, my character at the time does. Ask anyone here who has been invaded by us-- tho I am not sure how many know they were-- and I think, like it or not, they would agree we RP as well as invade, or rather that is part of the "techincal" invasion. I can't imagine any invasion group that did not do some sort of RPing, whether or not it fits your standards or takes place on the forums is another issue of course.

Another issue, which I am sure you are not intending-->

What would be the anonym of technical? Because, it seems you are setting up RPing as the opposite, which is not truly so. Both have a strict series of rules to observe. I really feel that your description of invading as a "technical manuever" props up RPing rather then defines, and this it does rather poorly.

Alright, too many words for a small quote not to have a conclusion, so I will be short.

All invasions I have participated in have had RP as a factor (I know one of the mods disagreed that we RPed, until I talked to him furtherm in which he said had he not responded so personally, he would have seen there was some humor there-- or something to this point-- and I am not talking about you Inept).

As well, most invasions I have partisipated have a level of RP to them, it is not simply a techinical grab.

Now I agree, there are some who only techincaly grab power. But most of these are so green around the gills, they won't last long because such a clincial take over is not fun for any invovled.

Sorry to take a short point up, but I have seen this several times, and I do feel your definiton of region invading is a bit misrepresenting. You are cool to disagree, justy wanted to maske my opinion.

In reply to the original post.
When you click on a nation it is highlighted for a period of time as a visited link(wherever you encounter it). By searching out like minded regions and visiting their delegates, you may then go to the UN Voting and the delegates you have visited will appear a different color thus making it easier to check their voting on an issue.

I do know Blue Moon. The description of them as a non-RP region crashing group is IMHO correct. They also grief (spam / mass-ban) almost by default.

Thank you Ackbar for your input. I intend to split the Offensive category into two, to reflect the distinction between RP invasions and technical maneuvres. The vast majority of invasive regions do RP. I will make this clearer. Blue Moon are an exception however, in that they do not RP. At all. All their invasions are purely technical griefing maneuvres. I know this because my region fought off an attack, and I have been involved in defenses against others. Some examples I can give of regions which they have attempted to grief are Endamar, Pallas Athene, Hawaii, 2 miles past nowhere, Eurasia and Mercia. There have been a couple of others whose names escape me. Ballotonia is also correct in confirming that this is their mode of operation - invasion, spamming, seizing of Delegateship, passwording, ejections. No RP. I can name a couple of other "newbie" regions which do the same. There are exceptions to every rule, and they must be given a separate category.

EDIT: In any case, the categories are under constant review. I am now thinking of having a general war RP category (to make the distinction you have been pointing out), a purely technical-region-crashing category (my experience points to a few regions which can be labelled thus), and an anti-technical-region-crashing category. I understand what you are saying about RP, but there are enough big regions out there doing this sort of thing to make having such categories worthwhile. Rest assured they will be clearly separate.

Then that’s cool. I just think there needs to be a fundamental separation between such groups ad role playing invaders. To suggest invading is purely technical is simply not accurate. Thank, though.

Thanks. I really didn’t mean to go off on a side note at all, I just noticed that invasions were be billing “purely technical” in several posts of late (not nec. All by you) and I wished to give my opinion before they washed into the lexicon of ‘What is an Invasion.”

My group RPs and invades. We do both at the same time, and as far as I am concerned it helps grant us a bit of legitimacy in the game. And, thus, it is important for me to make the distinction.

OK, a week on, and I only have two-thirds of the top 100 done, owing to a load of RL paperwork. I should have the rest of those done tomorrow, and will then post it in NationStates Forum, where I will gradually work my way down to all the 30+ nation regions, and incorporate any corrections people wish to make. 30-09-2003, 00:24
They are different, yes, I am well aware of that. However, as I have stated, the categories are deliberately broad in order to avoid having a large number of small precisely-defined ones. Remember, this is for players relatively new to that side of the game. Players interested in the far left of the political spectrum will know where to look, and upon further research can quickly make an informed choice. That is the important thing. If your region is featured, it is up to you to ensure that people skimming through your page get a clear idea of what you are about.

I actually tried this once, in a way solely based on interregional politics instead of RP. I haven't updated it in a while, but take a look (http://s2.invisionfree.com/Rejected_Realms_V3/index.php?showtopic=28).

Some suggestions for yours:

The Rejected Realms does host an anti-invader group, as does the South Pacific (actually, the SP are still working on theirs).

Some other technical region-crashers besides those on your list:

The Imperial Council
The New World Empire
The Bing
Atlantic should definitely be in either the region-crasher group or the Imperialist group...their stated goal is world domination, after all.

Antarctica is probably worthy of some mention, as is North Alerica.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am being rather slow, but researching over 200 regions, their off-site forums, post history of Founder/Delegates, etc is rather time-consuming. I should be able to make more of an effort over the next few days.

Will I be on there?
Tactical Grace
30-09-2003, 01:00
Well, I had a 30 nation cut-off in mind, with a handful of exceptions, such as the news service and UN HQ, and regions which have punched well above their weight in some matters. If I start including other regions, I fear I could be accused of bias. But there would be nothing preventing people from posting regional adverts in the thread once I start it.
Qaaolchoura
30-09-2003, 01:06
And assuming I were to put some more of my puppets back in?

Eleven more and I would have the thirty nations, and you would never know.

See my point?
Tactical Grace
30-09-2003, 01:17
Sigh. I wish people would not do that. I mean, a region of puppets would be kind of misleading, wouldn't it?
Qaaolchoura
30-09-2003, 01:23
No, a lot of regions have large numbers of puppets.

Why not just use the criterion that you gave earlier (that is regular activity, through traffic {although that seems to be less in ZF recently}, and one other), plus perhaps one-three extra features (map, website, forum, new service, etc)?
Tactical Grace
30-09-2003, 01:29
 Because researching all that would kill me?

I am not trying to make it an exhaustive list. My intention is to give inexperienced players a couple of hundred of the biggest places out there, broken up into groups by theme and politics. The idea is to give players a resource which will allow them to start off somewhere. If they want to go somewhere else once they get their bearings, that's up to them. I am only after a springboard.
Qaaolchoura
30-09-2003, 01:35
Basically, this will help larger regions at the expense of smaller, and regions such as Alcatraz and Blue Comet get their members mainly through spamming inboxes, and what sort of message would putting them on, while not putting on such regions as ZF, and A Better World, which are still fairly large, but do not spam, and are therefore not large enough, send?
Tactical Grace
30-09-2003, 01:54
I hope it would not send any negative message. Look at how many notes I have on the draft. I am trying to be as uncontroversial as possible, whilst keeping the project realisable. I am expecting a bit of flak when the list goes up. If the response is favourable, I will consider going down to 25+ after it has been up a month. But many regions below that size are unstable, which will make updates very time-consuming. I would like to be able to count on those places not disappearing. But like I said, if people want to use the directory thread to advertise, I am OK with that. I can see a lot of small regions using that opportunity.
Qaaolchoura
30-09-2003, 02:01
ZF is stable.

We are almost always at exactly nineteen nations. I do not know wht that is, but we never leave nineteen for more than a day, despite the fact that Canada-Germany is the only way back native left besides myself and my puppets.

I can see that this would require a lot of effort to keep it somwahat up to date. With all the puppets that I have, if I placed them all in one region, that would make that region quite high on the list. As it is, I prefer to have no more than one puppet per region, mostly to keep an eye on them.

What would come in handy, really, is a list of greivers and attackers, and their regions. That's so the defenders would know who to be looking for. :)
