The Player's Guide To Forum Etiquette
[Note: In the examples, the user who is an example of the topic is always User 2.]
WARNING! The following may be inappropriate for younger/immature viewers!
---------------------------------
Spam: (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun-spam.html) Spamming, quite simply, is repeating messages over and over, filling up the board with useless and unwanted infomation, otherwsie known as spam. Spamming is both annoying to others and easily punishable. Take it from me, spamming is not a good idea unless you aim to piss somebody off.
http://www.duke.edu/~bis/img/spam.gif
Example Of Spamming:
User 1: Hey, can somebody please tell me which region to join?
User 2: Region XX!
User 3: Or region Aaa Bbb too.
User 2: Region XX!
User 4: Maybe region DotDotDot
User 2: Region XX! Region XX! Region XX! Region XX!
User 2: Region XX!
User 2: Region XX!
What you can plainly see is that spamming is repeatedly dealing out the same or different information over and over, when it is unwanted and unneeded.
---------------------------------
Flame: (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun-STFU.html) Flaming consists of insulting someone else based on their religion, beliefs, family, race, ethnicity, background, nationality, wants, needs, comments, sex, likes, dislikes, morals, actions... It's basically just insulting others. If you flame, you are likely not only to get your own back, but have moderators and administrators look into punishing you as well.
http://www.miamisci.org/hurricane/fire.gif
Example Of Flaming:
User 1: Hey guys, is there a region for homosexuals?
User 2: Fuck you, you fucking faggot!
User 1: Come on man, I just want a region. Don't be like that.
User 2: Then... fuck you, fag!!!
User 1: Hey, fuck off yourself, asshole! Stop being a fucking flamer!
Moderator: Thread Closed. User 2 Warned.
Almost always, flamers will not recieve warm welcomes. Flaming is strongly discouraged, for it could lead to quite dire consequences.
---------------------------------
Stupidity: (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=stupidity) Stupidity is a much wider category. Stupidity can be anything posted to either intentionally or unintentionally annoy other people. Being stupid, while not as unwelcome as flaming, can result in some serious conflicts. However, it is hard to define stupidity.
http://spasni.dynip.com/images/stupidity.jpg
Example Of Stupidity:
User 1: Can somebody tell me how to buy nukes?
User 2: I sell you 9999 nooks! Go blow up the world!
User 1: No, I'm serious.
User 3: You fucking newbie.
User 2: Fuck you!!! I blow you up with my 999 nuke laser beam!
As you can see, User 2 is similating improbable scenarios. However, stupidity is wider than this. Stupidity can be almost anything on the forum, and you can see many examples all over any forum. Though sometimes, when in good humor, stupidity can be taken lightly, it is stressed not to be overly stupid.
---------------------------------
Advertising (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun/negative10.jpg): Well, advertising is quite basically making a post or thread which is supposed to attract attention to something you want everyone to view. Of course, advertising in itself is ok. But overly advertising can get people very mad at you.
http://www.gimponthego.com/advertise.jpg
Example Of Advertising:
User 1: Hey, how do I make a military?
User 2: Look at my military page for information!
User 3: You do the following:
User 2: No, look at my military page!
User 3: He can just follow my steps...
User 2: No, look at my page!
User 1: I think I'll just follow the steps.
User 2: No! My page! My page!
User 2: My page! My page! My page!
Usually, overly advertising can be linked to spamming. It is recommended that, if and when you advertise, you make sure only to do it in small amounts, such as once or twice in a week. However, there are no set limits.
---------------------------------
Positivity: (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun-positive.html) Positivity is a good thing on these forums. Be sure to use it. Positivity is basically just complimenting somebody on something, helping them out, or doing anything to lift their spirits.
http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun/positive8.jpg
[i]Example Of Positivity:
User 1: Hey, is my country ok?
User 2: Yeah man, it's great!
User 1: Thanks man.
User 2: Just telling it like it is, telegram me if you need help.
User 1: Thanks.
Positivity is the only thing on this list which will be REWARDED much more oftenly than punished.
---------------------------------
Negativity: (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun-negative.html) The opposite of positivity, linked with flaming.
http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun/negative14.jpg
Example Of Negativity:
User 1: Please tell me if my country's ok.
User 2: It sucks.
User 1: No, really, please.
User 2: It sucks. I hate it.
Negativity, unlike positivity, will be punished.
---------------------------------
God Modding: God modding is basically simulating a situation which others deem to be either 'improbable' or impossible'. It is strongly recommended you don't god mod, as it will be met with hostility. God modding could also, however, be failing to acknowledge a situation. Say your nation is attacked ligitimately, you have to acknowledge that, not ignore it. Or if it is taken over legitimately, you have to admit it. Failing to do so is god-modding. Another thing is that, when and if you are invading an enemy nation, be sure to know their geography. Because if you cross their border where they have mountains, then it would be different than crossing a desert, so be aware of the terrain.
http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/uf6/atom-bomb.gif
Example Of God Modding:
User 1: Hey, I attack your nation with my army.
User 2: I put up my defense shield and protect myself from all nukes! Lol!
User 3: You can't do that.
User 2: Then I bomb you and kill your nation and take over!
God modding WILL be met with hostility and punishment, or at least verbal abuse. Please avoid it.
---------------------------------
Spelling: (http://www.dictionary.com) While this is not mandatory, it is recommended: please spell right. It helps many other players greatly, and we all appreciate it.
http://www.members.accessus.net/~tmcdonld/lightsde/spelling.jpg
Example Of Correct Spelling:
User 1: I want to improve my military.
User 2: I will sell you a few nukes.
Example Of Incorrect Spelling:
User 1: I want to improve my military.
User 2: 1 w1ll 53LL j00 4 f3w n00ks!!!
Please, spell right. It's not mandatory, nor is it widely practiced, but it is a common courtesy. Thanks.
---------------------------------
Declaring War: (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=war) Declaring war can be done for IC reasons only, and not for OOC reasons. If you do not follow these rules, there may be dire consequences. IC means in character, OOC means out of character. It is obligatory that, if and when you declare war, it is only for IC reasons (meaning reasons inside the game) and not OOC reasons (meaning reasons outside of the game).
http://www.oneworld.net/penguin/pollution/war.gif
Example Of Declaring IC War:
User 1: I encourage slavery.
User 2: I declare war on you for your abuse of civil rights!
Example Of Declaring OOC War:
User 1: I went to McDonald's today.
User 2: I hate McDonald's! I declare war on you!
Please, PLEASE, only have wars and in game conflicts for in game (IC) reasons. If you attack others for OOC reasons, you will become ignored as well as flamed, and a moderator may choose to close the war's thread. This is almost the same as god-modding.
---------------------------------
War With The UN (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/pin=-1/page=un): Declaring war on the UN is, while it may seem stupid, commonly done. Please do not declare war on the UN, because you simply can not have a war with it.
http://www.un.int/jamaica/unlogo.gif
Example Of Declaring War On The UN:
User 1: Please, come and vote for the latest UN proposal!
User 2: I hate the UN! It takes away individuality! I declare war on it!
Firstly, you can't declare war on the entire UN and expect to defeat all of the nations in it unless the amount reduces drastically or you have a LOT of power on your side. Secondly, no matter how many times or how well you declare war on the UN, Max Barry is not going to take it out of the game, so don't.
---------------------------------
Staying On Topic: (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=topic) Please stay on topic. Pretty please. So if somebody starts a thread about one thing, please don't hijack it and then start a whole conversation about something else.
http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun/misc6.jpg
Example Of Staying On Topic:
User 1: Hey, who wants to trade with me?
User 2: I want to trade with you, man.
Example Of Going Off Topic:
User 1: Hey, who wants to trade with me?
User 2: So I hear that User 3 likes little boys...
User 3: Hey, guess where your mom was last night?
User 2: Don't try to change the topic... pedofile.
User 4: No no no, he likes ANIMAL sex, you idiot. Not children.
User 2: Oh. That explains the cat hair on his bed.
So please stay on topic, no matter how hilariously stupid your conversation is, out of courtesy for the thread starter.
---------------------------------
Encourage Good RolePlaying: (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=roleplay) Well, this one is pretty self explanatory, and has been gone into (in depth) in other threads, so I'll keep it short and sweet: spend time writing up your RP's. If you don't know what RolePlaying is, go to the RolePlaying FAQ (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2133).
http://www.nash.nu/old/graphics/roleplaying.jpg
Example Of Good RolePlaying:
User 1: The PRK has just recieved word from our Coast Guard that a number of ships have set sail for Amerigan waters. Apparantly they are either owned or were chartered by a sect of the Church of Vash the Stampede that advocates nonviolent resistence as a method for affecting international crises. There may be as many as five thousand of our citizens aboard these ships.
User 2: King Ian the Second of Velaria issued a proclamation today, declaring a Neutral position in this war. "We must protect our nation and our citizens first. Large scale interferance with the disagreements and policies of other nations is not our way, and the government of Velaria chooses to not to involve our small, defense-oriented army in a conflict that could lead to potential retaliatory attacks on Velaria itself. However, relief for any refuges will be made available in the nation, and diplomats are available via the UN, if neccessary." The royal proclamation was met with a heavy show of support from most of the populace, and the elected Council of Representatives in Velaria has declared it's backing of the King's proclamation.
[TAKEN FROM THE AMERIGAN SLAVE WAR]
Example Of Bad RolePlaying:
User 1: I attack.
User 2: I attack back.
User 1: I attack again.
User 2: I attack back again.
User 1: I defend!
User 2: No! How could you?
User 1: Now I attack again!
User 2: I attack back!
User 1: I... attack.
User 2: I go out for a pizza.
User 1: I... ok.

---------------------------------
Vocabulary: (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=vocabulary) Here is some commonly used player vocabulary on this forum.
http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun/negative3.jpg
Example Of Forum Vocabulary:
Admin: A forum or game administrator
God-Mod: To do something IC which is considered impossible or improbable.
IC: In character, or inside of the game
Mod: A forum or game moderator
Newbie: Somebody new to the game
OOC: Out of character, or outside of the game
RolePlay: When you act out an IC scenario
RP: RolePlay
STFU: Shut the fuck up
WTF: What the fuck?
---------------------------------
Consequences: (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=consequence) Be sure to always think about the consequences your actions will have. If you flame, spam, attack, god mod, etc..., there will be a negative reaction. But seeing as how it will most likely be justified, you have to take that, and can't complain (well, you can, but nobody's going to listen).
http://www.ems-medical.com/eng/handpiece_01.jpg
Example Of Consequences:
User 1: I support anti-terrorism.
User 2: I support terrorism! So I nuke you!
User 3: I'm allied with User 1, so I attack you, User 2.
User 4: I'm allied with User 2, so I attack you, User 3.

---------------------------------
Using Code In The Forum: (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/faq.php?mode=bbcode) Using code in the forum is very simple, if you follow the instructions in the link provided (the blue words at the beginning of this paragraph). Follow all the instructions there and you should be able to sucessfully post code.
Hello!Hi there!Heya!
Example Of Code In Messages:
User 1: Hey, how do I make an image?
User 2: Do IMAGE URL and replace 'IMAGE URL' with the URL.
User 3: Other code can be found here: Link To The Code Page (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/faq.php?mode=bbcode)
To troubleshoot, make sure to check the code first before asking for help. Image URLs need to be valid, and make sure that [/b] is not messed up, such as with the '/' after the 'b'. Also, this differs from HTML code, which uses < and > along with different and more varied codes.
On a related note, remember that some people still use 56K modems and dial-up connections and will have serious problems if a webpage has large images or a lot of images. Additionally, some images are so wide that they break the forum window screen on some people's displays. To get around either of these problems, hyperlink to the desired image and provide a warning that it is a large image. For example,
See my beautiful nation! (very large image) (IMAGE URL)
If you have a lot of images, please hyperlink to them all.
---------------------------------
Please post opinions or comments, if you want something changed, removed or added.
