Graphical Map of UN Classifications

12-05-2003, 00:36
There are 27 UN nation classifications, each filling a certain position on the personal/economic/political freedom scale. They are color coded by prevalence. You can find a map of them here:

**** SPOILER WARNING!!!! ****
Spoiler: If you know the relative freedoms of the UN classifications, much of the mystery is taken out of your decision-making process.
http://alces.sel.uaf.edu/gregg/ns/nsmap.html

[violet] made a summary of the prevalence of the different nation types and posted it on the news page. It is cool:

http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=nationstats

Here on the forums, I notice that Forostar started a topic to address this question, and Aelenti put forth classifications. I agree with them.

Thread: http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6551

The primary factor I used for tie-breaking was the description text that appears in the first paragraph of the nation description. This text is always the same for a particular type of nation, regardless of other factors. This leads me to believe that the game designer wrote that text based only on the position of the nation type relative to other types.

Since the variability of Civil Rights and Political Freedoms is very small within a given nation type, those also provide support to the map.

Thanks! I hope that we can figure this out with the combined brain power of forum people. The alternative is to create fire-and-forget nations with a specific agenda dn then try to get them to change from one classification to another. That kind of experiment would give us 100% certain measures of the relative positions of the classifications. But it would be a week-long project, as opposed to the two hours it took to just guess and make a picture.

I tried a while ago and got a corrupt dictatorship. Guess I didn't knock down capitalism and personal freedom enough.

One of the things that makes me suspicious of my map is that my Civil Rights Lovefest jumped two categories to a Scandinavian Liberal Paradise with one decision to restrict campaign contributions by large companies. But, I guess that makes sense, since that decision restricts both political and economic freedom. What a neat game! I can't wait to see version 2.

Remember - these can't really be classified this way. The UN categories are based on the laws your nation enacts, not actually on your three freedom scales.

Remember - these can't really be classified this way. The UN categories are based on the laws your nation enacts, not actually on your three freedom scales.

My scales aren't the three freedom scales that you see reported. I'm trying to reverse engineer the original table the game designer used. If I read the FAQ correctly, the three scales you see on your nation report are determined by issue decisions, initial conditions, and an underlying set of three parameters. The FAQ says that the underlying parameters will be pretty close to the values observed by a nation, but the variability for a nation type seems pretty darn huge.

That's why I gave the first paragraph text a lot more weight than the nation scales that I observed. I assume that the designer had three scales, each with three categories, for 3^3 = 27 nation classifications, and tried to describe how those classifications might result in different types of nations. So it's qualitative reverse engineering, which means I certainly got things wrong. I'm a programmer and I'm not too facile with understanding speech by normal people.

Thanks! I made a version before looking at your categories, but I messed up the relative positions of Father Knows Best and Corrupt Dictatorship and omitted Free Market Paradise, the net result was about 6 nations in the wrong place. Looking at your list fixed that!

Now I wonder if we can see the relative distribution of nations by classification? That would be nifty.

Cool map  There are a few I haven't seen though; those three being tyranny by majority, conservative democracy, and free market paradise. :(

Dumb question though, are the authoritarian/libertarian/centrist categories based on your decisions on issues or what level your civil rights/economy/political rights are at, or a combination of those?
15-05-2003, 05:03
Dumb question though, are the authoritarian/libertarian/centrist categories based on your decisions on issues or what level your civil rights/economy/political rights are at, or a combination of those?

That's not a dumb question at all. And it's a little hard to answer, but here's how I understand things:

There are three 'hidden' scales: "Personal Freedom, Economic Freedom, Political Freedom." These are hidden from you by the game. When you look at your nation report, you see three different but closely related scales: "Civil Rights, Economy, Political Freedoms." The values you see on your nation summary are based on the hidden scales, your issue decisions, UN resolutions and your initial choices. (I think.) There is some variability in all three of the reported values, but the most variable one appears to be economy.

So you can have a Psychotic dictatorship, but if you've made the right economic choices, it can still have a good economy. You probably won't achieve a Frightening economy with such a restrictive government, but if you do, tell us all how you did it! Similarly, I really want to see an Anarchy or a Corporate Police State with an imploded economy.

Everything I said here I'm stealing from posts by Aelenti, Sentient Peoples and others and the NationStates FAQ. Blame them.
15-05-2003, 06:04
As best as I can tell, "Civil Rights" and "Political Freedom" appear to accurately report the actual freedom variables that determine category, although the "line" between centrist and libertarian appears to be in the *middle* of "Excellent" (which means that one nation with Excellent Civil Rights might be a Left-Leaning College State while another nation with the same reported values might be an Inoffensive Centrist Democracy). (I'd have to check again to determine where the line between centrist and authoritarian is, but I *think* it's in "Some". That information is not certain, however). Economic Freedom, however, *is* hidden, and Economy can vary quite far from it, based on variables I can't fully isolate yet. If anybody had specific questions on what freedoms are affected by what issues, I have most of them worked out, although a few I don't know (mostly because I routinely dismiss some issues, and haven't fully explored the decision space for all of them).

15-05-2003, 06:38
QUESTION: Is there a Free Market Paradise country out there? There must be.

Yes, there is. The Free Land of West Ariddia. It's not my main nation (The People's Republic of Ariddia is communist); it's just an experiment in capitalism. ;)

http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=west_ariddia

At least, it's a Free Market Paradise today. In case that changes, here's the description:

The Free Land of West Ariddia is a large, economically powerful nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 23 million enjoy frequent elections, which are uniformly corrupted by big-spending corporations buying politicians who best suit their interests.

There is no government in the normal sense the word; however, a small group of community-minded, corrupt, pro-business individuals juggles the competing demands of Commerce, Law & Order, and Religion & Spirituality. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology, Automobile Manufacturing, and Retail industries.

Corporations donate huge sums of money to favored politicians, there are no minimum wage laws, the mining industry is making inroads into environmentally sensitive areas, and all major public areas are watched by police surveillance cameras. Crime is a major problem. West Ariddia's national animal is the trout, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the west ariddian credit.

Civil Rights: Some
Economy: Very Strong
Political Rights: Superb
15-05-2003, 06:49
I think the last two choices for the Spiritual Advisor issue both raise Civil Rights (at least slightly). The second will make your people more compassionate as well, while the last makes them more hard-nosed.

I've seen one or two Tyranny By Majoritys (Tyrannies By Majority?), it seems as though taking a wrong turn at one of the dictatorships can get you there. Conservative Democracy (as well as its cousin, Moralistic Democracy) are what one of my other nations (non-UN) went through every now and then when I increased the political freedoms by accident - it's normally a Corporate Police State or something similar.
15-05-2003, 08:21
]I would like to see this, too. It's on the to-do list. ;)

I really don't want to subject your server to the 10,000 page requests it would take to do a survey, but I couldn't resist writing a script to do it.

So instead of surveying the 99,990 nations in the current UN report, I just surveyed the first 2000.

So, here's the breakdown of the government types of the 2000 nations with the largest gambling industry.

551 Compulsory Consumerist State
385 Corporate Police State
296 Capitalist Paradise
135 Capitalizt
124 Father Knows Best State
117 Inoffensive Centrist Democracy
77 Left-Leaning College State
71 Anarchy
53 Benevolent Dictatorship
45 Corporate Bordello
34 Iron Fist Consumerists
25 New York Times Democracy
23 ex-nation (It's worse than that! He's dead, Jim!)
20 Right-wing Utopia
19 Libertarian Police State
14 Civil Rights Lovefest
3 Democratic Socialists
3 Corrupt Dictatorship
2 Scandinavian Liberal Paradise
2 Moralistic Democracy
1 Left-wing Utopia

I estimate that the script would require about 2 hours to survey the entire world, with that figure based very strongly on current load on the respective servers and general internet load.

And unless an admin tells me to, I'm not going to do that. Nationstates only prohibits robots from the forum, but still, it seems rude. Maybe instead I'll just survey the ends of the spectrum for a few days and the we can all see which nation type does best/worst on the various UN surveys.

Yes, please don't hit our server to query the whole database! This poor forum is barely standing as it is.
15-05-2003, 12:54
Some of the "nation types performing well on the surveys" would just be commonsense, wouldn't they? I might be wrong, but it doesn't surprise me that Compulsory Consumerists and so on have large gambling industries. My guess would be the distribution would be similar for "most pro-market nations" as well.

That map is excellent! Thanks!

I have one question though. At the moment my ratings are:

Civil Rights Lovefest

Civil Rights Economy Political Freedoms

Is "Widely Abused" the highest rating for Civil Rights as well as Political freedom? Or is it just Political freedom that can be "Widely Abused"?

Other players have already done this, and might share.

I do not comprehend that map, it's nice but, I'm ignorant...
23-05-2003, 01:11
I do not comprehend that map, it's nice but, I'm ignorant...

Here's the short answer: your country has a certain amount of different types of freedoms. (personal/economic/political) Each time you make a decision, you increase or decrease some of these freedoms. Based on how much of each freedom your country has, the UN assigns you a name, like "Benevolent Dictatorship" if you have a lot of economic and personal freedom, but no political freedom. But if you have, say a lot of personal freedom, little economic freedom, and medium political freedom, then you're a "Scandinavian Liberal Paradise."

The map is my attempt to draw the position of all the nation types along the 3 axis of freedom. It's supposed to kinda look like slices of a cube.

For fun, some friends and I are trying to make a region that has all 8 of the most extreme government types. And they all have to have cool flags.

I would try to make a 27 nation region with one of each 27 country types, but that would require either more free time or more friends.

It was a one-party state (low politics).
Every act was possibly recorded, and subject to prosecution (low civil)
From what I recall, there was no private enterprise -- under IngSoc the government oversaw all production (low econ)
So yes, Psychotic dictatorship

26-05-2003, 10:59
Here.... let's get up an example of each of the different categories!

Just for reference sake and all... it could prove interesting.

The Democratic States of St Lucia
"Statio haud malefida carinis"
UN Category: Free-Market Paradise
Civil Rights: Few
Economy: Powerhouse
Political Freedoms: Widely Abused
Location: Caribbean

The Democratic States of St Lucia is a small, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-working, intelligent population of 18 million enjoy frequent elections, which are uniformly corrupted by big-spending corporations buying politicians who best suit their interests.

There is no government in the normal sense the word; however, a small group of community-minded, corrupt individuals juggles the competing demands of Commerce, Law & Order, and Religion & Spirituality. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Uranium Mining, Gambling, and Beef-Based Agriculture industries.

Harry Potter books are banned, the police force is on a recruitment drive, the automotive industry soaks up huge government handouts, and euthanasia is illegal. Crime is a problem. St Lucia's national animal is the parrot, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the XCD.

(and yes, this one's more what I was aiming for, for RP purposes.)

The Disputed Territories of The Ancient Pit
"Fear for your life."
UN Category: Psychotic Dictatorship
Civil Rights: Outlawed
Economy: Weak
Political Freedoms: Outlawed
Location: C_Ebans_World

The Disputed Territories of The Ancient Pit is a very large, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its punitive income tax rates. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 127 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, moralistic, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, the Environment, and Public Transport. The average income tax rate is 84%, and even higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Cars are banned, organ donation is compulsory, military funding has been stripped back, and organ donation rates have hit a new low. Crime is a problem. The Ancient Pit's national animal is the demented Elder, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the beating.

The Dominion of Sketch
"Big Brother is Watching You"
UN Category: Corporate Police State
Civil Rights: Unheard Of
Economy: Frightening
Political Freedoms: Outlawed
Location: AZN Pride

The Dominion of Sketch is a massive, safe nation, remarkable for its punitive income tax rates. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 1297 million are ruled with an iron fist by the corrupt, dictatorship government, which oppresses anyone who isn't on the board of a Fortune 500 company. Large corporations tend to be above the law, and use their financial clout to gain ever-increasing government benefits at the expense of the poor and unemployed.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, moralistic government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Defence, with areas such as the Environment and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 61%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Uranium Mining industry, followed by Automobile Manufacturing and Beef-Based Agriculture.

Scientists regularly clone human beings for research purposes, organ donation is compulsory, citizens are barcoded to keep track of their movements, and the country is preparing for war. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Sketch's national animal is the mindflayer, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the credit.

The Incorporated States of Chuckles
"If you have to ask, you can't afford it."
UN Category: Right-wing Utopia
Civil Rights: Some
Economy: Frightening
Political Freedoms: Average
Location: Middle of Nowhere

The Incorporated States of Chuckles is a enormous, economically powerful nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 916 million are free to succeed or fail in life on their own merits; the successful tend to enjoy an opulent (but moralistic) lifestyle, while the failures can be seen crowding out most jails.

The large government juggles the competing demands of Commerce, Defence, and Education. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Automobile Manufacturing industry.

The streets are increasingly clogged with poverty-stricken beggars, the latest Harry Potter book is a bestseller, the country's famous rainforests are being bulldozed by the mining industry, and euthanasia is illegal. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Chuckles's national animal is the jackalope, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the almighty dollar.

The Incorporated States of Yucaztlan
"Heritage Modernized"
UN Category: Iron Fist Consumerists
Civil Rights: Rare
Economy: Frightening
Political Freedoms: Few
Location: Shevat Treaty Organization

The Incorporated States of Yucaztlan is a enormous, economically powerful nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 797 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

There is no government in the normal sense the word; however, a small group of community-minded, moralistic individuals juggles the competing demands of Defence, Commerce, and Law & Order. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Automobile Manufacturing industry.

The alarmingly racist TV show 'Bigtopians Say the Darndest Things' is a hit, scientists regularly clone human beings for research purposes, college students make ends meet by selling their kidneys, and euthanasia is illegal. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Yucaztlan's national animal is the coyote, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the nuyen.

The Holy Empire of The Nexus
"Acceptance is peace"
UN Category: Civil Rights Lovefest
Civil Rights: Superb
Economy: Imploded
Political Freedoms: Superb
Location: the South Pacific

The Holy Empire of The Nexus is a enormous, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its strong anti-business politics. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 766 million hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, liberal government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of the Environment, Education, and Social Equality. The average income tax rate is 100%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

The government is reigning in public spending, euthanasia is legal, scientists regularly clone human beings for research purposes, and citizens can be frequently spotted going about their business stark naked. Crime is totally unknown. The Nexus's national animal is the tiger, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the golden .

I'll put others in other posts, unless someone else wants to add them too... don't wanna make this too unweildy... as if it isn't already...
26-05-2003, 12:19
Here's mine, currently a corporate bordello:

The Holy Empire of Nakagotopia
"Early birds get the worm; the 2nd mouse gets the cheese"

UN Category: Corporate Bordello
Civil Rights: Average
Economy: Frightening
Political Freedoms: Superb

Location: Bishounentopia
The Holy Empire of Nakagotopia is a enormous, economically powerful nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its compassionate, hard-working, intelligent population of 295 million are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Equality, Education, and Commerce. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 46%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Gambling industry.

The government awards prizes to television shows featuring stereotype-breaking minority roles, it is a crime to offend someone's religious beliefs, organ donation is compulsory, and the government is slowly introducing social welfare programs. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Nakagotopia's national animal is the seiryuu, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the shinzaho.

Is "Widely Abused" the highest rating for Civil Rights as well as Political freedom? Or is it just Political freedom that can be "Widely Abused"?

Corrupted is actually the highest level of Political Freedoms (that I've seen), Widely Abused is second. For Civil Rights, I believe Frightening is highest, but I'm not entirely sure what the second one is (I've never seen Widely Abused as a Civil Rights level, not once, so I'm willing to bet it's not in the Civil spectrum). Excessive might be second for Civil, though it's third for Political Freedoms.

On the 3-D graph and accompanying table that start this thread (which are most excellent, I might add), I've found one minor inconsistency.

The table has:
Capitalist Paradise | Centrist Libertarian Libertarian
Corporate Bordello | Centrist Libertarian Centrist

However, the graph indicates:

Capitalist Paradise | Centrist Libertarian Centrist
Corporate Bordello | Centrist Libertarian Libertarian

It's a minor flaw in an otherwise most appreciated document, and something I don't *think* I've seen mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but which one's right?

If you're still collecting examples of each category type, here's five more from my region:

The Dominion of Mechanizek
"Order is the engine that drives the nations"

UN Category: Father Knows Best State
Civil Rights: Below Average
Economy: Frightening
Political Freedoms: Outlawed

The Dominion of Mechanizek is a enormous, safe nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, hard-working, cynical population of 233 million are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it concentrates mainly on Commerce, although Education and Law & Order are secondary priorities. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 32%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Automobile Manufacturing industry.

Punitive tariffs protect local industry, the government is avowedly atheist, the automotive industry soaks up huge government handouts, and a large-scale revitalization of the education system is underway. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Mechanizek's national animal is the tarrasque, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the modron.

The Federation of Andrestia
"Peace, wisdom, compassion"

UN Category: Scandinavian Liberal Paradise
Civil Rights: Superb
Economy: Reasonable
Political Freedoms: Some

The Federation of Andrestia is a very large, safe nation, notable for its complete lack of prisons. Its compassionate population of 98 million enjoy extensive civil rights and enjoy a level social equality free of the usual accompanying government corruption.

The average income tax rate is 49%, but much higher for the wealthy. A small but healthy private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Door-to-door Insurance Sales and Book Publishing.

Andrestia's children are widely acknowledged as the most foul-mouthed in the region, voting is voluntary, gambling is outlawed, and college students make ends meet by selling their kidneys. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is well under control. Andrestia's national animal is the wolf, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the drac.

The Dominion of Evardia
"Together we stand against the tyranny of others."

UN Category: Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights: Average
Economy: Good
Political Freedoms: Below Average

The Dominion of Evardia is a very large, environmentally stunning nation, remarkable for its burgeoning elk population. Its compassionate population of 114 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The average income tax rate is 40%, but much higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Trout Farming, Information Technology, and Furniture Restoration industries.

The tenet of free speech is held dear, punitive tariffs protect local industry, the nation is ravaged by daily union strikes, and guns are banned. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Evardia's national animal is the elk, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the mark.

A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Automobile Manufacturing, Book Publishing, and Beef-Based Agriculture industries.

The government is cutting back on the number of political prisoners executed each year, it is a crime to offend someone's religious beliefs, voting is voluntary, and high-income earners pay a 100% tax rate. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. That Guy Named Imre's national animal is the t-rex and its currency is the brewer.

Here we go again!

What you see as "Economy" is different from "Economic Freedom." The report that you see for "Economy" is based on the state of your individual industries, your decisions, your government type, the phase of the moon, Oprah's current weight, and a hidden scale that the game keeps called "Economic Freedom"

As such, "Economy" can vary wildly and pretty much any government type can have a good or a bad one.

Social and Political Freedom appear to be different, where your government type closely corresponds to what you see in the report. But notice that you both have "Excellent" civil rights, which supports what other people have said: that the dividing line between the government types happens somewhere in the "Excellent" range.

Using [violet]'s nifty stats, I have color coded the nations on the map by prevalence.

Color choice was very finicky, due to the skew of the distribution, and the color ranges chosen were to best differentiate the nations while maintaining readability.

Sometime's it's neat how making a graph like this can easily demonstrate things that would take a fair amount of careful calculation to prove analytically. For example, there appears to be a strong, positive correlation between personal and political freedom and no general correlation between either and economic freedom.

How do I know this? Look at the way that the colors tend to be arranged in horizontal bands. This means that as economic freedom changes, the relative prevalence of the other two factors doesn't change that much.

But, since there ARE patterns apparent in the graph, there must be some kind of correlation going on. In this case, look at the blueish graph entries. Notice how they are arranged on opposite edges of the cube? On one edge, personal freedom is high and political freedom low. On the opposite edge, political is high and personal is low. These nations are (by far) the rarest, and that implies that not many people in the game choose for high freedom in one and low in the other. That's a positive correlation. If it was the other way around, and these nations were popular, and the other edges of the cube were rare, then it would be a negative correlation.

For those of you with real statistical experience, I apologize for the gross simplifications and the use of assumptions.

First thanks very much for putting in the effort to get these insights. Moreover I feel you have spotlighted a very interesting issue here: I would be quite excited in analysing the data collected in the game to probe people's true political preferences, as opposed to generally accepted categories or those imposed by the game's creator.

In setting up the game as an interesting challenge game Max has (albeit inadvertantly) got a stupefyingly large number of people to provide data on their political / economic preferences and choices. Cluster analysis, non-dimensional scaling or some such statistical technique should reveal the underlying dimensions or axes along which these choices have been made. While these groupings may well coincide with commonly used classifications such as left / right, libertarian / authoritarian, etc., they may also differ significantly, revealing a better way of understanding the principles governing people's behaviour in this area.
09-06-2003, 05:28
I agree, a more detailed analysis, based on the results of nation creation and decisions, would be very interesting.

However, the issues were designed to be entertaining and fun, instead of unbiased. This greatly limits their value as a survey. You'd have to do some second guessing of the slant of the questions, as well as obtain some more information about the sample population.

And how does one account for nations that exist for role-playing purposes?

Regardless, it would still be nifty.
10-06-2003, 15:03
Bias and duplication are certainly problems, but I believe that if there are a few major determinants that govern behaviour / ideas then they will underly choices that people have made even when they are acting out of character. Also cluster analyses might identify role playing.

I have this visison of the data being passed on to a social sciences graduate school and students happily mining it for ideas in class projects for years on end. :D

The one you're missing is Free-Market Paradise.
Woo-hoo!!! I don't suppose you know the name of a nation that has that type? There is a nation in The Conquerors Alliance that is a free market paradice.

The Colony of New Aquilla
"Eagles Rule!"

UN Category: Free-Market Paradise

The Colony of New Aquilla is a tiny, economically powerful nation, notable for its complete absence of social welfare. Similarly, I really want to see an Anarchy or a Corporate Police State with an imploded economy.
I realise this thread and creator died a long time ago but one of my puppets just became an Anarchy with an imploded economy. Thought I'd share.
