Role-Playing FAQ
Since we see a lot of questions about declaring war, trading, allying, etc... I thought I might make an FAQ for anyone new to the forum to read. Enjoy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. How do I declare war? How do I trade? How do I set up a peace treaty?
Currently, there is no system for doing any of those. Therfore, all of this must be roleplayed. For instance, if you would like weapons, make a post saying "Requesting Weapons." If anyone accepts this, then they'll respond with something like, "we'll be willing to give you weapons for a price of 1000 dollars."
2. So... it's not actually happening?
Correct.
3. Are they going to make a system in the future that doesn't rely on role-playing?
Possibly.
4. Okay, since it's all role-playing, I'm going to take over the world! I launch fifty nukes at every country!
First off, that wasn't even a question. Second off, that doesn't make much sense. Even though it is role-playing, there are limits and it's trusted that you're creative enough to work with those limits. For instance, if you just created your country five minutes ago, it's doubtful you even have nuclear weapons.
5. You're wrong! Aliens gave them to us.
That is called "God-modding." If you're going to role-play, at least make it believable. Other examples of God-modding:
-Having a giant force field that protects you from missiles
-Having technology that allows you to blow up the entire world
-Having millions of dollars when you've got an imploded economy that is heavily dependant on basket-weaving and trout
6. Well that sucks. What do I do now with my country besides eat some trout in a basket?
What would a real nation do? Think about that. You might want to apply for international aid. Or maybe offer to sell some land in your country.
7. I'm ready to declare war! Seriously this time though. I've been around for about a month now, my economy is very healthy, and we have a well-funded military along with tons of allies. What do I do?
Well first off, there should be a reason for every war. If you're a harmonious democracy with great civil rights who's been an advocate of world peace, don't just go out and say that you want to conquer the world. Come up with a reason, it makes it a lot better.
8. Okay, I've got a great reason; they stole my trout.
You can only say that if they actually posted it. Never make things up on behalf of a nation. And if they really did post it, are you sure you don't want to peacefully solve this?
9. Yes! Just let me declare war!
Okay then, post that you're declaring war. Make sure that the person who you're declaring war on responds. You can never make up actions for them, so don't say "I attacked you and you lost, you surrendured." After you get the go from your opponent, you might want to lay down the rules of the war with them and get someone to moderate it to make sure you're not God-modding. But remember, make it creative. A war shouldn't be like this:
PERSON 1: I attack.
PERSON 2: I attack back.
PERSON 1: I attack again.
PERSON 2: I attack back again.
PERSON 1: I attack.
PERSON 2: I attack.
PERSON 1: I attack.
PERSON 2: I... DEFEND! Didn't see that coming did you?
PERSON 1: I kill your defense.
PERSON 2. I attack!
PERSON 1: Then I attack back!
PERSON 2: I attack!
PERSON 1: I attack!
PERSON 2: Okay screw this, I'm gonna get a soda.
Be creative with your wars. They're never going to end if both of you just keep attacking each other endlessly until you get bored.
10. Let C be the curve in R3 defined by the parametric equations:
x(t) = cos(et)
y(t) = sin(et)
z(t) = et
For t in [0,2]. What is the length of C?
Square root of 2(e^2-1)
11. Added by Darkskye: What happens if somebody Godmods against me? What do I do if a nation launches 3057205712306893721067132 nukes at me...even though they were created 3 seconds ago! Help!
First off, ask the person to please be serious. RP is a serious buisness. If not, then smile and walk away and pretend it never happened. There is no reason to get worked up/upset/or keep playing if the person will not be serious about this.
12. Added by Xen: Other people won't RolePlay with me, what do I do?!
First of all, post very frequently, over the period of a week. Eventually, people will have to, in SOME form or way acknowledge your presence. Then you will be treated like a regular!
13. Added by New Caithness: I was polite. I contacted the nation I wanted to go to war\trade\otherwise interact with, and they're ignoring me. Does that mean I can just do what I want?
I set up a situation, using all the information available to me. I engineered it so that it was a can't-miss proposition on my nation's part-there was no way they could avoid what I was doing. They disregarded\made something up to prevent my action. Aren't they cheating?
No to both. Any roleplaying done via posts is free-form, and the only real rule is that everyone controls their own creation; only they can decide what really happens to it. They have the right to disregard you, especially if you are calling the effect of your action.
In short, in free-form roleplay, you have the right to take a swing at someone -- but only they have the right to say whether you managed to hit them.
14. I want to roleplay something different, but everyone isn't roleplaying on my level.
You don't have to be directly effected by the whole world if you've decided to make a nation 1000 years ago in the magical island of Tikitoki. There are many different role-playing "worlds" so to speak. A modern one, a future one, and even one that takes place in the 19th century. You can choose to role-play on whatever level you want.
15. Thanks for all of the information! Could you please give me a quick rundown?
No.
16. You suck.
Just kidding. Okay, here we are:
DO NOT roleplay for other nations
DO NOT God-mod
Your role-playing SHOULD BE AFFECTED by your nation's current status
BE CREATIVE when you role-play
If someone is God-modding or just being plain stupid, IGNORE THEM
17. Thanks for all of the help! But one of my questions wasn't answered on here.
If you've got a question that hasn't been answered, you can post it on this topic. Someone will most likely answer it for you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for all of the support! I hope to add more questions later, so if you've got one that hasn't been answered, post it! I might add it to the FAQ!
Hmmm... I think this is an important read for newbs, myself included (being new to the whole RP thing). It needs a little fleshing out from the experienced amongst us but I think this definitely is a good idea... and probably should get a sticky if any mods notice this :D
This should be a sticky.

:D I agree with Lord Veda :D
This SHOULD BE A STICKY OMFG...great post. BRILIANT! All the questions I normally end up answering! Answered! ALL HERE!
Unfortunatly there like ARE no mods...so Ill just KEEP BUMPING IT up...w00t!
You forgot to add BTW:
"What happens if somebody Godmods against me? What do I do if a nation launches 3057205712306893721067132 nukes at me...even though they were created 3 seconds ago! Help!"
This is my answer:
"First off, ask the person to please be serious. RP is a serious buisness. If not, then smile and walk away and pretend it never happened. There is no reason to get worked up/upset/or keep playing if the person will not be serious about this."
This is a critical post, but I have a feeling it won't be read as much as it should be.

Yah! We should work together, and create a list of things like how to RP and all that. And maybe some suggestions on how to introduce a nation to the world of RolePlay.

Q: Other people won't RolePlay with me, what do I do?!
A: First of all, post very frequently, over the period of a week. Eventually, people will have to, in SOME form or way acknowledge your presence. Then you will be treated like a regular!
OOC: Excellent post indeed, definately the kind of thing you'd want stickied with a big "READ THIS FIRST" in front of it. But I guess for now all we can do is keep bumping it and post a link to it in every thread that contains high traces of newbie-ism. ^_-
Edit: Never mind, looks like someone decided to sticky it! Yay! ^_^

Q: How do I advance my nation technology wise?
A: You can try and increase spending in education, or wait until your population is large enough to undertake such a technological advance. Use your own judgement to decide if your country is advance enough to make such a technological breakthrough.
YAY! this message got sticky'd.
I love relevant posts... thanks for the little guide on international RP etiquette. XD
Heres question about trading that i'd liked answered:
Suppose Nation A has uranium, Nation B no uranium and Nation C has no uranium aswell. Can Nation A trade uranium to Nation B, have them make nukes and send them to Nation C?

Wahoo! The thread is sticky! Now we just need W&P to edit his post to accommodate the new questions and answers.
Already been done. I'm updating it to accomadate for questions that haven't been mentioned. Thanks for all the support!
Alderania: Sure, as long as all three nations agree with it.
Q1: I was polite. I contacted the nation I wanted to (go to war|trade|otherwise interact) with, and they're ignoring me. Does that mean I can just do what I want?
Q2: I set up a situation, using all the information available to me. I engineered it so that it was a can't-miss proposition on my nation's part -- there was no way they could avoid what I was doing. They (disregarded|made something up to prevent) my action. Aren't they cheating?
A: No to both. Any roleplaying done via posts is free-form, and the only real rule is that everyone controls their own creation; only they can decide what really happens to it. They have the right to disregard you, especially if you are calling the effect of your action.

OOC:
I have a couple of questions.
First, someone mentioned possibly talking about how a new RPing nation could introduce itself to the RPing group, but nobody ever really said anything about it.
Second, I've been wondering why there isn't a region dedicated to those nations that want to role-play. Maybe there is a region and I just missed finding it. If there isn't a region, perhaps we should all talk about creating one?
Hmm, as a small emperor over an insignificant little corner of the northern Scandinavia (Europe) we are not always familiar with the English language (for this purpose we have advisors, alas they have failed us this time).
Could someone please explain what OOC stands for ?
This is the best post I've seen in awhile. Kudos, W&P.

OOC is Out of Character when someone heads up their post as this they are posting as themselves not in character as the leader/whatever of their nation.

Great guide! I'm kicking around an idea of having one of my nations invade another of mine and it brought up a couple of things I hadn't really thought about! Sigh, why does a corporate police state invade somewhere where the only industry *is* trout farming? Coastal dachas for fishing holidays?

If it has not been done, I would like to start composing a small compendium of RP terms in this thread. Please feel free to add to it, but please do so through telegram to me so that I may edit my post.
I might alphabatize it if I have extra time or it gets very long, but I doubt that will be needed.
Please note that many of these are from my experiences in AOL and message board roleplaying, and may vary from board to board. Generally these terms transfer pretty well.
IC: Literally, in character. The "roleplay" of roleplaying. It's what your character, your nation, etc. does. Anything said here is not necessarily the opinion or personality of the poster.
OOC: Literally, out of character. These tend to be commentary, humorous remarks, or the actual opinion of the poster. Not necessarily the opinion of the poster's nation or characters. This is also where you'll probably see emoticons the most.
Godmoding (variations: Godmodding, godmode, mode, godmod): Doing something impossible or unrealistic as related to your nation, character, economy, people, etc. I believe this was adaquately explained in the topic post. Taken from video games, where godmode would make the character invincible and, in some cases, superpowerful.
Avatar (variations: mun): The OOC person who roleplays the character (see below.)
Character: The IC being that is roleplayed by the avatar. May not look, act, think, or work the same way as the avatar. In nationstates, generally a high ranking government official within the nation that is posting.
seeing as it's 3 in the morning, I cannot think of any more. Once again, addendum through telegram is welcomed. Thanks.

On the RPing, if you want to goto war with somebody, chances are you need a reason to do so. Especially if your a democratic country. Which means you have to be on the forums, wait for an opportunity, and then decide to attack. Usually, it is not good for a democracy to attack another country, but dictatorships can get away with this.
Keep in mind, though, that if your a new country, chances are that you are not advanced enough to go to war.
If a person doesn't respond to you via telagrams, but are active posters in the forums, usually starting a new thread with the declaration or threat would be a good thing to get that users attention. It is bad RP to ignore a user's demand for war.
There is also a difference between Good RP and Bad RP. I'll explain Bad RP, as then you can avoid it like the plague.
So, you get declared on and this guy makes a reasonable landing. You acknowledge that you know of the declaration, but then go on and say that the landing never took place. You fail to bring up any evidence to back up your statement, like the country is new, the country lacks funds in defense, the country is sending more soldiers than its economy could handle, or the country is a democracy and has no reason to declare war on you.
Good RP is to make your statement that no war took place, and that you back it up reasonably well.
Bad RP is to ignore telegrams from other countries, especially if your fairly active on the boards. If the person asks for the general discription of your country, it would usually be a good idea to give the person some basics. Be consistant with your countries geography, and not switch from mountainious landlocked region during war, to a chain of islands during times of peace. It is bad RP to be inconsistent.
An example of describing the geography of your nation could go along like this.
"Well, my country is on a continent, but has a shoreline on the east and north of it. My capital is located by a river, but it is inland, towards the western border. My major cities and industry centers are located on the coast. There are many hills and some mountains in the Western and Southern part of my country."
Maps are extremely welcomed, and could make things much more simplier and by far much more enjoyable for you to RP.

Q: I have a Basket Case economy... and rare Political and Civil Freedoms... what does that mean?
A: They are different ratings for your country. The economy is how good your country is doing moneywise. Political Freedoms is basicly, what rights your people have to vote... if they can at all. And Civil Rights is what rights your people have to do.
(would the maker of this F.A.Q. please include all the different ratings... like Powerhouse, All-Consuming, Frightening, Great, Very Good, ect.?)

I cry for the continued rape of the English language.
I'll make a few more additions like the ones requested on page 3 after I get all the information. Thanks for the support.
It is good to know firstly that there are stickies.
Secondly, it is good to know that there are people who really wish to play their individual roles rather then simply use in-numerable photon nukes on everyone.
Thirdly, it is VERY GOOD to have your RP world mentioned personally:
'A modern one, a future one, and even one that takes place in the 19th century.'
Ah yes thats us, the world without Nukes and the short dictator from Cosica.
An attempt to help
I noticed several questions about using Nationstates figures to help sort out your infrastructure, trade and war. Well, that is the ideal goal of some RP worlds, to make these notes reflect a nation. Thus we try (and I mean all us RP worlders) either to distance ourselves with reflecting an army off these or to try and incorperate them or at least some of them (I admit, the population is dead useful for troop numbers, as its always going up). On alternative, for example, '1800 Europe's' sister world 'WW1-2 alternative ' is to try and make its own military and economic systems independant off Nation states. Also, in regards to tradables, remember to role-play it the way you set your nation. I';m doubtful that a world set in the times of Pax Romanum would be busy trading motar cars and Uranium, but by careful changes, you could claim to be trading horses and firewood, which would be allowed. Likewise, something set in the year 3001, could trade in unique space items.

I am not adding this post without a purpose. I would like to ask whether everyone else who has made an rp world could come together to make a post that advertises ALL THE WORLDS and can be made sticky. It would be a lot better then having to constantly bump my other thread on my world and I'd say the same for others as well, most likely. (Not that I won't post special events etc on my other post) It is simply to act as a quick guide to the worlds, what they cover, what they offer and where they are. I myself would not mind visiting someone elses RP world...in fact I was hoping there would be a Forgotten Realms one...oh well. Thank you very much for making this topic, Wisdom and Progression.

We should have a special forum wherre we can create treaties, alliances, and pacts and go to war with eachother. War: Each war could be a new topic. Attacks could be launched with posts. Other nations could join the war, but they would have to pick a side. Alliances can't be broken. Treaties/alliances/pacts: Each treaty, alliance, or pact could be a new topic. In the topic the different nations would debate and/or ratify the treaty, alliance, or pact.
I cry for the continued rape of the English language.

What we really need here is to make a RPing enviroment. Being an experienced roleplayers, with a huge and highly detailed fantasy and sci-fi worlds under my sleve (years of writting, drawing and thinking), I can tell that the only way to do this is by creating a connectivity of nation's storylines, regional backgrounds and the like.
Lets take, for example, what I am trying to acomplish with the Sisgardian region: First is the creation of the nation, a general thought of how would it look and be like. Then I made a map, quite random, I have to say. You start creating a vague background of the region, adding names, better cartography. Then was the idea of the World Technologic Entity, to take into action the ideals I wanted for my nation. It went good, nations joined, and together we are creating a much solid background for the organization and our nations. I was glad to see that some of the members decided to join Sisgardia. I added them to the map, and continued building up the background and enviroment, etc, etc, etc.
You see, by this example, I try to show what is the process that should be taken to make a good Rping enviroment, suited for a more ruled war system, real diplomatic models, etc. I am not saying that you need a map for that, but having something to look at is a big boost for RP models.
There is the example of Menelmacar's cartographic initiative for Eä's regional map (from the much worshiped Tolkien).
There must be some other initiatives of the like.
As another point, but related, maybe building a World Map could be most than usefull as well. Different regional maps could be fixed up to fit into a common world/system/universe. That way, everything could be seen in a different, more realistic angle.
I hope I made the point clear, although I am not sure if I did, hehe.

Some people who are engaging in wars might want to put down rules of engagement and a listing of forces at the start. Personally I don't agree with that, but it might work for some. Apart from a few God-modding incidents the wars I've been watching seem to be well role played.

Forsooth! Thou hast but only a minimal brain if thou art without a knowledge of this aweful speach of old.
ya dude if u dont kno this old talkin then yer dum
A few newbie questions I have about the RPing:
1: Is it ok to say that my non-UN 'tutorial' (Initialista) state is allied, diplomatically, militarily, and economically with my 'permanent' state (Carcassone)?
2: There's a rough formula for military strength based on population, but what about the calculation of GDP/ currency value? For international trade, these matters are very important. What is the approximate exchange rate value of the oboli? My economy is reasonable, my tax rate 25%, my population 6 million. Am I third world, prosperous, what?
3. An equation for military size is presented, but what about military technology level? I may have armed forces with 120,000 personnel, but with my economy how many tanks, planes, and ships are appropriate? Should I start roleplaying with the shittiest Soviet Union knockoffs, or can I justify more modern equipment, given my economy and population?
4. Other than names of the states involved, how can you seperate the various RPs? I'd prefer to play in a modern, contemporary time setting, so what are the fantasy/sci-fi/etc. game threads so I can avoid messing up in that way?
ok so which bastard stole my nick name?............

Greetings and Salutations,
Her majesty the Queen of Des Isle, does humbly put forth a suggestion for all concerned with the apparent decline of the English language. We recommend that you read “The Mother Tongue, English & How It Got That Way” by Bill Bryson. This slim volume (a mere 245 pages) is a delightful and insightful read.
We would also like to take this opportunity to make mention of the fact that while our Queendom is just recently formed, we proudly note that book publishing is one of our major economic strongholds and as such, we would be more than delighted to supply additional information regarding your obtainment of the aforementioned book. All reasonable trade offers will be considered.

Agreed. And as noted, any language where the unassuming word fly signifies an annoying insect, a means of travel, and a critical part of a gentleman's apparel is clearly asking to be mangled.
But nowhere in this glorious world is there a language that is so unashamedly colored with a prism of variety per word than the American English language.
Personally I don't give a whit if the rest of the world derides or ignores my lovely language...it is a work in odd progress...and progress is better than not moving at all...

And we are also of interest in the works of a Mister Richard Lederer, of whose columns appear weekly in the Des Isle Sunday TimesPostCronicle. While we are occasionally bewildered by said gentleman's train of thought, we are also generally amused and informed by said content.
Would the personification of Insanityandpufferfish be so willing as to suggest further readings of such nature to the people of Des Isle?

Ok.. i have a question. Someone told me that you can but stuff on this, and it will be "mailed" to your country, like for exaple, i want a giant statue like the statue of libery and my ally counrty says they'll buy one and send it to me. Not in role playing means, of course. so someone answer my question!

Eh? 99% of this game is in roleplaying... you can't really "send" things to people...
I'm glad everyone is benefitting from this! Also note, you can post on this topic if you have a question not answered, and it will probably be answered by a member.

hmm i still dont really get it.. so we just kinda imagine what we're doing and hope other people know what we're doing? how do we know what other countries are doing etc.. and what actually results from this roleplaying, because nothing actually records ur actions, does your nation not change as a result? sorry, im very confused!
The basic requirement of trade between nations is an accepted policy of currency exchange rates. This should go beyond the whimsical decision of those playing. Obviously a FORMULA is needed to determine the ability of a nation to partake in International trade. Some nations have cooperated to establish such a method.
If interested, do a search on Mulferland and refer to the thread about the IMF and the WTO. Upon finalization of the economic concerns of International Trade, the principles and rules of WAR, will be conceptualized. Think about it, even RPGer's like AD&D, RuneQuest, etc, etc.... have base rules.
Submitted in good will and flames will not be responded to. Telegrams will be answered, but further interest should be posted on previously specified thread.

Well this string is amazing. I have been playing for a couple weeks and a few of my questions have been answered, however there is another important point that I feel should be addressed, and that is stupid U.N. proposals.
I respect peoples right to express themselfs but find the right time and place people. For example, today I got a telegram from some jackass who wanted me to vote to keep George W. Bush locked up on his ranch. That is not something anybody cares about on this site, even if it could be done.
I have started to get involved in various events and would like other noobs to know that stupid proposals are a waste of time that only serve to piss off the people who have been playing for some time and that deserve our respect. I mean you don't go to someones house and messing shit up on them do you?
Thank you for your time and I hope due consideration is given to this issue.

so how do we pay other nations for their goods?
so we don't get money? how much do we start with? Do we keep track of it ourselves?
It's all pretty much in roleplay. Except for the fact that you can get an estimate from your economy rating.
how much do we start with? who keeps track?
so we don't get money? how much do we start with? Do we keep track of it ourselves?
OOC:
This is how we do it in our region, not sure how they do it in others. Each nation started out with $1 billion. Then, based on each nations economy, purchases of materials, selling of materials etc. it fluctuates up and down. We've also factored in a GNP that re-calculates the amount of "money" each nation has every 2 weeks, so a new influx of cash occurs then. The GNP is based on the tax level of each country, the state of the economy...stuff like that.
For trade purposes, this is how we base our currency values. A nation's unit of currency with an "imploded" economy simply can't have the same purchasing power of a currency that comes from a nation with a "World Benchmark" rating. So, this is how it works for us:
trade values based on IRL US dollar = Good
ECONOMIC =
Frightening(15) 2.00
All-Consuming(14) 1.85
Powerhouse(13) 1.75
Very Strong(12) 1.50
Strong(11) 1.25
Thriving(10) 1.10
Good(9) 1.00
Reasonable(8 ) .85
Fair(7) .75
Developing(6) .65
Weak(5) .60
Struggling(4) .50
Fragile(3) .25
Imploded(2) .10
Basket Case(1) .05
We let 1 US dollar = "good" in order to not have nations that are so totally in the tank that they have no hope of peering out. So, if your economy is "good", your currency is worth 20 times the currency of a nation with a "Basket Case" economy. However, if your economy is "Frightening", your currency is worth TWICE that of a "good" economy nation. We make this the basis of all trade and purchase agreements. My suggestion to our nations is that all trade agreements should not be permanent, as they never are in the real world. A time limit should be set on agreements. 2 weeks seems to me to be a decent amount of time for an agreement, but the length is really up to the individual nations participating in the agreement.
Can trade agreements be dissolved?
In our region, yes, trade can be dissolved at anytime one country wishes to. However, if the trade is dissolved prior to the termination of the agreed upon time limit, the nation dissolving the partnership will hurt their reputation, causing other nations to be reluctant to trade with them in the future.
Example: Nation X and Y agree to trade with each other for 2 weeks. If nation X dissolves the trade after 1 day, nation X won't be trusted to trade with in the future. If nation X wishes to trade again with other nations, (say nation Z) nation Z will likely demand extra advantages for itself. Such things as extra weapons, food, supplies, whatever that must be delivered free of charge to nation Z prior to the trade being finalized.
This way it keeps people from just dumping agreements that they've entered into. It also should keep things such as "permanent" agreements from being set up. If a permanent agreement is entered into, neither side can back out or they will hurt their reputation.
In our region if a nation backs out of an agreement, a general telegram is sent sent to the region by the other nation, warning others of the risk of trading with that nation, and advising them to demand extra concessions because of the poor reputation of the country.
Hope that makes sense. If you like, I can post the method in which we re-calculate the GNP every 2 weeks.
Here's my question: say that a country has 5 million people. They send 5 million to take on my army of 8 million. I obviously oblitterate him, but he just keeps sending more troops. What should I do?call it god-modding and walk away, tell him he's got no army left and force him to sign a peace treaty with me or just keep oblitterating whatever he keeps sending me until the point in which he just gives up and signs a piece treaty with me?
It's basically up to you. Personally, I might try this:
Since they have a population of 5 million, and they've sent ALL 5 million to attack you, their home is undefended. Take it over.
Although I must say that it sounds like they are god-modding. Depending on the response to the scenario above, I might just walk away shaking my head.
I am brand new here.
I read the Faqqing FAQ
I am really beginning to like these portal sites, incidentally.
Anyway, how do I manage resources, education, etc.
I'l look around and probably answer my own question, but it says to post frequently, so here I begin.
Here's my question, does economy and civil rights influence the population growth of the nation?
No... but the amount of issues you get do.
QUESTION: how do I become a UN delegate for my region? I am from the region "Cinecon", we have no un delegate. One of my fellow countries endorsed me. And, I am a member of the UN
How do I become a delegate for my region?
You might have to wait for a while; it took about a day for the UN to recognize me as delegate after i got endorsed. If you have the most endorsements in your region and your still not delegate, try the TECHNICAL forum.
We here at Weyland-Yatuni Megacorp would like to thank you for the information.

Power Slave, what Ragnarok Alliance?
Thank you that answered my questions. I'll remove my godmodding posts now. :D
I have two questions:
1. What if your country set up a specific region for the purpose of having a common goal and then your region starts noticing nations that join the region just to be hostile toward the founding nations and try to take over? Then what if the founding nations conduct negotiations with the aggressive nations in the REGIONAL posts and war is the only answer. Then what if the original nations OPENLY declare war on the hostile nation on this Forum and they do not reply. Does that mean we win? I mean if there is no give and take, no post and reply, there can be no war. Do we just claim victory? Essentialy how do we get rid of these hostile nations in our region? Can we go through the UN? (They are so slow and no one listens anyway.)
2. What is up with Vthnaar, a new country trying to redefine RPG for nationstates? This was my first RPG and I read this post first. I think my RPG skils really took off as a result of LEARNING from this topic. (No Godmodding on my part.) I think this topic is a brilliant one. Why the need for an overhaul? Vthnaar seems to be getting a lot of support yet I think if everyone abided by the guidelines set forth in this topic we will be just fine.
Please feel free to telegram me with any suggestions. Thanks.
O.K., Say two nations go to war. After the battle is fought, and the victor has been decided, the questions I have to ask are:
1. What happens to the winner?
2. And what happens to the loser?

I think these paragraphs are a good set of idea for size of military and tech level of the military for nation states. People telegram me for ideas to better refine these principles:
Wait for your population to grow. Take the benchmark that your total military personnel is 1 to 2% of your population, depending on whether or not you have universal conscription. Going from historical precedents of the 20th century, it is POSSIBLE to conscript up to 10% of your population, but only in dire emergency (Russia in WWII, Vietnam in the late 1960s), and even then, only 1 to 2% will be trained professional soldiers- the other 8% will be highly untrained conscripts. Now for your dedicated military, you have to decide the percentage going into each branch of the service- Army, Navy and Airforce. Then there's the matter of frontline forces versus support forces- anybody care to elaborate on what this ration ought to be?
In regards to nukes- I'd say it's good roleplaying to only say you have nuclear weapons if you choose to conduct Uranium mining and your economy is fair or better.
Let's see- here's my rough approximations for economy levels and approximate army tech levels (I'm going with a baseline assumption of culture and whatnot analagous to the real world:
Imploded: A this point, we're talking Somalia and Mad Max, if even that. Not even all of your soldiers have guns. Those that do have a ragged mix of hunting rifles and AK-47s. You have no air force or navy per se- maybe a few old Huey helicopters, or some small motor boats with machine guns.
Struggling- Rwanda, Sudan. You almost have regular army units, with more experience soldiers. Infantry have AK-47s, officers have sidearms, and there are a few grenades and the occasional support weapon. For armoured support you have Toyota pickup trucks with missile launchers mounted in the back. Your air force is maybe 40-50 old helicopters and a few dozen propellor planes. Your navy might include a few patrol boats
Developing- the wealthier African nations- You might actually have a few dozen soldiers sufficiently well trained to qualify as special forces. There are regular standing army units and a chain of command, with regular military facilities. You have some tanks- mostly old Warsaw pact tanks- some artillery, and some AA missiles. Your air force has a few jet trainer/fighter bombers, but no dedicated air superiority craft. Your navy has some escorts and cutters, and maybe 1 or two full size destroyers.
Fragile- Syria, Bolivia- You have a well trained army handicapped by old equipment. You haven't been able to get anything new since the end of the cold war- your weapons are mostly 1970s era. You probably have a whole lot of old tanks and artillery, which would be great, if this was World War II. Your navy may include a few destroyers and submarines. Your airforce has old Migs and F-111s, Hueys and Hind helicopters. You might have a few hundred commandos.
Fair- Colombia, India- You can justify having a navy of rather old ships- some might even be WWII era. Cruisers are feasible for your navy. You can have a handful of nuclear weapons, and some primitive ballistic missiles and old bombers to carry them. You have a domestic defense industry for the basics- guns, boots, vehicles.
Good- China- Your army has some modern equipment, but by no means the cutting edge. You may have an aircraft carrier. You can have nukes, though your ICBMs are inaccurate and prone to being duds. You can make your own aircraft and ships.
Strong-Russia- like Good, except with some small pockets of new high technology equipment. Ballistic missile submarines ('boomers'). Dedicated attack helicopters, air superiority fighters,
Very Strong- Most European armies. Modern tanks, modern jets, mostly purchased from abroad. You can make things, but for the best in the field, you have to import.
Thriving- Germany, France- You have your own modern defense industry, capable of making advanced jets, tanks, and ships. You can justify having a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. You have a large air force with aircraft for any role, and a considerable navy.
Frightening- UK, Japan, Israel- Your army has just about everything- mobile artillery, anti-missile missiles, VTOL aircraft, a fully developed paratroop and marine force. You can justify nuclear powered aircraft carriers.
Powerhouse- This is the level of technology of the current US military- satellites, GPS, cruise missiles, a fully mechanized army. Orbital weapons can be justified. You've got nukes in large amounts, in ICBMs, a large bomber force, and nuclear submarines. You can field a fleet equalled by few others.
All-Consuming- At this point, you're ahead of the curve in world development. You justifiably have the weapons that the US predicts to have five to ten years from now- the CVNX, X-35, robot drones, etc. You have orbital weapons.

i have a question...what is "bump" and "spam"???
Bumping puts a topic back at the top... and there are two different kinds of spam.
Good Spam: When you play forum games and they are in the "General Discussion" forums... it's OK.
Bad Spam: Forum games in IC forums or posts like "DNFKDGHRDKUTGHREGRGRG".
How do I work out how much money my nation has?
And what kind of prices are reasonable for tanks,aircraft....etc?
You can make it up... as long as it's not un-realistic.
Thats the thing though....I dont have a clue what is or isnt unrealistic.
Being that your country's Economy is only "Reasonable"... you shouldn't say you have $1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000... and so on. And for prices... just put them at a price you'd buy them for. If someone says they're too much... lower the price. If every one seems to buy em' like nothing... raise the price a bit.

There is somekind of time compression in effect, But most Rpers don't realize it. While my nation was created on march 17 my Pop has
exploded, unless my people breed like rabbits, they are under some kind
of Time Dilation and more time has passed than that month that whizzed by. This should be roleplayed also because you don't just go from 3 mil to 8mil in a week. Anyone agree?
Yes, this led to great problems in the 19th century scenario and is why in the ww1-2 scenario we're using historical numbers.
Alright keep yer allens on. Its just slightly nerdy, thnats all

Hes found it! Three cheers for Wisdom and Progression....
The beauty of FFRP is that it does not follow one specific set of rules, like AD&D®, White Wolf®, Vampire: The Masquerade®, or Mage: the Ascension®. Rather, Free Form draws from ALL of these resources and more. A FF role player can choose his or her character to be ANYTHING they desire.
Well they're just what they sound like. When creating characters to role play, it's important to make them as original as you possibly can. Yes, it could be fun to play Haplo the Patryn from The Death Gate Cycle, or Fizban the Fabulous from DragonLance, but you have to consider something: all of these characters are creations of their authors. the playing of another's character is often looked down upon by many experienced role-players...it signifies to them a lack of creativity, or laziness (even if that isn't the case). The best way to avoid this sort of thing is to create your own, new, original character to play. Keeping that in mind, it is also vital to make your character realistic.
With role playing, some acronyms and abbreviations are acceptable, but as general rule of thumb it is always better to use correct spelling and grammar when typing out the actions and words of your character. Doing such will allow others to see you as an intelligent player and someone who is concerned with details...many good veteran role players look for this sort of thing in a new player. Using correct grammar and spelling will make your meanings clearer, and it will make for more pleasant reading of your character's actions and words, almost like the others were reading a story. So try to make use of commas, capitals and periods when you should. It makes for a better experience for everyone.
It's important to keep that in mind even after you have created your character. Now that they are real, many of their actions should appear real as well. For example, if you walk in and another character waves to yours, don't respond "Hey Xavier!" as if your character knows them already. Realistically your two characters have never met....make introductions, role play it all out. It can get interesting, and lead to adventures with these characters that you meet. Realism also plays a part in the setting you're playing in. For example, if you're playing a vampire character, you may only be able to play him/her at night, as sun and vampires don't usually mix. If you want to play a vampire during the day, perhaps you will come up with some creative reason they can be out in the dark; they sacrifice some part of themselves to gain a week of being able to do that, they have a special amulet that lets them. Get creative! Don't just say: "Oh, he's immune to sun." That's not very exciting....spice it up a bit, make a 'real' reason for why the vampire can go in the sun. Similarl,, don't expect the setting you're playing in to be an age of political correctness. Vampires, to use the same example, are regarded in general as creatures of darkness and evil..don't expect them to have 'rights' like 'normal' people in a setting...the land your characters are in
Fights are a part of this land we play in. Conflict is part of the role playing experience, from mighty battles between armies, to a one-on-one with a paladin and a lich, right down to the simplest of bar brawls. Fights are commonplace in such a setting, and while they occur often, like any other role playing they should be performed with a bit of forethought, realism, and creativity. Basically, there are two types of fights you can conduct in a free-form environment; I'll talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each.
We come to another almost 'dead art' in free form roleplaying: the Free Form Fight. This is simply a fight with no dice, no limits, only the imaginations of two roleplayers who are willing to talk, plan, and agree on what will happen in a fight, who may win, how they may win, and what will happen to both sides when the outcome is decided. A free form fight may not have a clear winner, as it depends on the actions each side takes, what the players talked about before the fight started, and what they agreed on. The Free Form Fight is much more complicated as you can see, but it is much more rewarding in terms of roleplaying as it forces you to talk with other players about what courses of action you want to take should you win, or what will happen if the other side wins. It's not an easy thing to do, but it's well worth trying, as doing it well will gain you respect from other players. Let's take a look at two examples of free form fights.
* Lyris yanks at her sword, struggling to pull it from it's sheath as the thing covers her.
* lurker` bites Dyre and glides off of Lyris' head.
* _Dyre_ grits his teeth as he reaches for his mace.
* lurker` crawls along the wall, then glides off, attacking Lyris.
* Lyris stumbles away from the thing, taking a deep breath, her sword finally sliding free.
* Lyris whirrles and slices at it, a low growle in the back of her throat.
* lurker` catches the blade on one of its flaps. The wound bleeds and the lurker bites at Lyris' hand.
* _Dyre_ draws his smooth mace, still gnashing his teeth against the pain of the bite, ad takes a swing at the creature.
* Lyris yelps and snatches her hand away, a smear of blood on it.
<^Slug^> *slurp-slurp* The slickery-soft sound cuts through the sound of harsh breathing from the two people (and one lurker).
* lurker` glides off of Lyris, just ducking the mace. It lands on the wall and crawls to the floor, headed back for Lyris.
* Lyris backs away quickly and looks around, moving away from Dyre and the light stone so that her infravision can kick in.
* Lyris bares her teeth and swings upward, stabbing at the thing.
* ^Slug^ is a rather large slug. How large? Hard to say quite yet... four feet of its length is emerging from under the spiral stairs and there's no sign of its end in sight.
<^Slug^> *slurp-slurp*
* lurker` is cut once more, but it crawls to Lyris and tries to bite her again, bleeding freely.
* _Dyre_ turns to see a giant slug advancing as well. "more?"
* Lyris runs from the lurker, toward the slug, dropping her sword as she locks her thumbs together and mumbles a few words and a fan of flame shoots from her fingers at the slug.
* lurker` chases Lyris.
* _Dyre_ takes another swing at the lurker as it seems intent on killing Lyris.
* lurker` is bleeding more, now.
* lurker` chases Lyris, trying to bite her.
* _Dyre_ chases the lurker, swinging his mace at it in an attempt to get it to change targets.
* Lyris keeps her attention focused on the spell she just cast, hoping Dyre takes care of it.
* Slug`` rears back, issuing forth a near-subsonic shriek that makes the adventurers' eardrums feel ready to burst. It's outer hide sizzles a bit, slightly singed. Truly angered now, it slides directly toward the woman that broasted it, moving much faster than one might expect a slug to do. A large maw opens, several rows of needle-sharp teeth are exposed, dripping slime.
* lurker` keeps biting Lyris.
* Slug`` gives forth a strange sound not unlike the sound of a ship hull being raked against rock and a stream of slimy goo shoots out of its gaping maw, aiming for Lyris.
* Lyris yells, thinking she's bit off more than she can chew and swings her hands with a snarl, still shooting flame, at the lurker who has made several new, bleeding orifices on her.
* _Dyre_ cringes at the noise the slug is making, and slams his mace down at the lurker.
* Lyris gets hit by the goo.
* lurker` is hit 1 time, and then 2 times
* lurker` keeps trying to bite her, but the attempts are easily dodged now.
* Lyris is hardly moving, her movements slowed considerably by the goo, and a paniked look comes over her face.
* lurker` tries to crawl away
* Slug`` charges Lyris, stopping about 2' away. Its upper body starts to descend; looks like it's going to try to hammer her with its bulk.
* _Dyre_ allows the lurke to leave, as it seems the slug is more of a threat now. He heads over towards it, mace in hand.
* lurker` turns and bites Dyre, bleeding all over the place and scorched.
* Lyris screams, stark terror in the sound as her form begins shift, growing larger, hair growing along her skin.
* lurker` crawls away, back to the ceiling.
Here we can see a GOOD Free Form fight. There is obviously communication between players behind the scene, and each player takes hits and does not try to avoid everything, or pull some god-like action that will instantly destroy the beast and allow them to move on. Free Forming a fight well includes remembering your character's weak points, and the strengths of the monsters you may be facing. Keep in mind that the quick easy victory is usually not the one that will allow you to have the most fun. Now let's look at another example:
* LordDuh draws his sword, swinging it at Gronk with a growl!
* Gronk catches the sword in his hand, the blade doing nothing to him. He punches LordDuh in the face, laughing.
* LordDuh dodges the punch, and fires a ball of flame at Gronk, jumping out of his hold and wrenching his sword free.
* Gronk is impervious to fire! He charges LordDuh, picking him up and throwing him across the room!
* LordDuh takes flight as he is thrown to the air, landing softly on his feet....
I think you get the idea that this is what NOT to do. You can see that this is not really a free form fight so much as a free for all in whatever these two characters do. Neither of them is acknowledging the other's actions, they are only interested in a quick easy win, which the other is not willing to give them. The result is a boring, confusing waste of time that allows for no character development.
They called me a GodPC? How come?!
This is probably one of the stickiest topics ever to come through role playing forums. A GodPC, simply put, is a character that has no weaknesses, can kill everything with a flick of his/her hand, can see through walls, deflect bolts of lightning with his pinkie, get straight A's without opening the book, etc, etc, etc...I think you get my point. A GodPC is basically an unrealistic, unbalanced character, with no flaws or weaknesses apparent in their being, and/or no areas that require work or development on the part of the player. GodPC's are BAD. They are bad for thousands of reasons, but the main one is simply that they detract from the realism of the game. No one is invincible or without flaws/problems, so why would a character be like that? Trying to play with a GodPC is not much fun for other players, so they generally ignore them, or if they refuse to listen to any advice thrown their way, they're booted from the game. If you are called a GodPC, you may want to think about your character's abilities, flaws, and personality. Please note that everyone's opinion of what make's a GodPC varies...if you are called one and you don't think you are, perhaps you should talk to the other players privately and explain the action you just made your character do. Sometimes all it takes is an explanation.
Being a 'Puppet Master' implies controlling all aspects of the game. In the case of FFRP, it would mean controlling another player's character, or dictating what will happen to them as a result of actions either you perform or others perform. Let's take a look at an example:
* Kylus walks into the Inn and looks around.
* LordEvil senses the Paladin and grabs him, throwing him into a table and watching as the splinters pierce his skin, hurting him badly.
Now see what LordEvil did? He grabbed Kylus and threw him, then dictated what happened to Kylus after he hit the table. He gave Kylus' player no chance or ability to react himself. Try to keep that in mind when interacting with other players; trust them to make their own PCs react to your own. In other words: don't step on anyone's toes.
Some Things to Remember as a Player
This section just gives a few notes to you, the player behind the character. These pointers are very important and are general rules of conduct between players. Not heeding this advice could lead to fights, hurt feelings, and a great deal of stress on everyone's part. Please read and take the following notes to heart.
It's only a game.
Nothing nothing ever spoken has ever been more true than those four words. Please remember, no matter what happens, that FFRP is only a game--a fantasy, an escape, something to entertain, amuse, and relax. Never take anything that happens in a role-playing game personally. Most things are in character, meaning they are between characters, NOT the players behind them.
The difference between In Character and Out of Character
In addition to remembering that it's only a game, it's important to differentiate between In Character and Out of Character relationships. Just because two characters are married, that does not mean that the players behind them have any such relationship. Always remember the boundary between In Character and Out of Character; crossing it or ignoring it can lead to hurt feelings, fights, or even worse. Any way you slice it though, it is not pretty.
Have Fun!
The ultimate thing to remember when gaming in BDI or anywhere else. FFRP should be a stress reliever, and an outlet for creativity. Don't let it become a frustration or aggravation. Just have fun with it!
Excellent, BG. And on a sidenote, why does it (this thread) either keep cannibalizing the last couple of pages, or adding a couple of blanks???

I dont know if this has been asked yet but how do you know how strong your currency is and wouldnt it undergo severe inflation during a war? :?:
While RPing one conflict, I've noticed something really irritating that bugs the hell out of me. Some small countries with populations under 10 million people have come into the thread thinking they're some tough stuff. They then threaten larger countries with nuclear missiles, and if that fails, their entire army, which supposedly consists of Spec Ops soliders, magically land on in their targets territory.
For clarities sake, let's say one nation has 5 million people and a good economy and no compulsory military service (we'll call him A) and the other has 435 million with a frightening economy with compulsory military service(we'll call him B). These are all part of the same interaction, just seperated to make points later.
1--------------------------------------------------------------------
A) Stop or I will nuke you!
B) Right.... You and what army?
2----------------------------------------------------------------------
A) You have insulted me! I will nuke you now!
3-------------------------------------------------------------------------
B) It gets shot down by an anti-missile battery.
A) You can't do that!
B) I can. My country does a lot of research in military defenses.
4-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A) Fine, my troops which are all Spec Ops are invading your capital.
B) What? They haven't even been transported our shores.
A) Fine, I draft all of my people.
A) They get transported in 30 minutes.
By this point, nation A is being ridiculed by everyone else in the thread, and is then ignored.
So what point am I trying to get at? Let's analyze this scenario.
1) Nation A is threatening Nation B, which is 60 to 70 times its size, with nuclear weapons. The larger nation is most likely going to have enough nuclear power bomb the hell out of the smaller nation at least 100 times. Also, most smaller nations don't threaten larger nations unless they have allies willing to help them.
2) Nation A launched a nuclear missile at nation B. Nation B may be hurt by the missile, but it'll still have enough military might to go over to your nation and flatten it to the ground.
3) The missile gets shot down and nation B gives an reasonable explaination as to why. Nation A argues this point, but gives no valid points, usually only stating "You can't do THAT!". Other nations involved tell Nation A that yes indeed it was shot down and the explaination was good. Nation A is obviously upset, which leads too...
4) First of all, let's think about the Spec Ops claims. It's highly unlikely that a nation that young would have even a small team a spec ops, not to mention an entire army composed of them. In fact (correct me if I'm wrong) it's highly unlikely that ANY nation could have an army composed entirely of Spec Ops troops. Now, they magically appear outside the capital of nation B. Kind of strange, isn't it? Nation B was able to shoot a nuke down, yet he has NO water mines, AA cannons, pillboxes, beach defenses, etc., for Nation A to have to pass by? I doubt that and it's promptly pointed out by more than one nation. So, in response, Nation A recruits their entire population then claims they make it to the shores of Nation B within 30 minutes. First of all, you can't recruit your entire population unless you have a death wish for your nation. Second, you can not get to another region within half an hour. I would think it would take a mininum of 3 hours to travel between regions, and that's being generous.
By this point, everyone is pissed off at Nation A or at least irritated, and they promptly ignore/ridicule it. If they want to RP, they should at least make the effort to make it believable.
How do i know how much money do i have, How do i know what kind of technology do i hvae(e.g. f-117) how much military do i have.

To role play you should steal other nations money and get someone to train you. Join Extreme Greed so we can learn to role play using other nations money!!!
If your nation's top industry is Arms Manufacturing do you need to buy weapons?
If I want to, say, buy some tanks, how esactly would I go about doing that? Would I just say that I bought some tanks? And if so, what would they cost, and where would I post that? Is there any kind of guideline as to how much something would cost, or do I just make all of that up, but keep it reasonable? And about how much money would I get to start with, and how do I raise more?
A'ight...I think that's it for now.

Find someone who'll sell you them...You can post 'Requesting tanks,' but try to narrow it down a little so that us poor arms dealers don't have to post our entire sales catalogue at you.

Question:
Can a future level country go to war with a present day country if the future troops use the same weapons as the modern ones (No lasers vs. assault rifles, just AR's vs. AR's)?

Since we see a lot of questions about declaring war, trading, allying, etc... I thought I might make an FAQ for anyone new to the forum to read. Enjoy.

I've read this threads and I've gotten a general idea of how the game plays out, but I still have a few minor questions...such as how exactly do you start out? Do I just say I have "x" amount of dollars or what? And where do I go from there? Help please! :?
I'm sure this is a stupid question to all of you..but how do I check my status and all that sort of stuff? How do I tell the size of my Nation and Military and how much money I have??? I'm still confused and I've read pretty much all these helping threads.

10. Let C be the curve in R3 defined by the parametric equations:
x(t) = cos(et)
y(t) = sin(et)
z(t) = et
For t in [0,2]. What is the length of C?
Square root of 2(e^2-1)
But would the length of C vary if the plane being discussed is Euclidean, Spherical, or Cylindrical? Or are we just dealing in the 2-D plane?
Also, can GMming nations reasonably RP within a context (for instance, a futuristic TV show)?

Its a line in a 3D space whose co-ordinates are arranged with the above equations, the position on the x axis is determined by f(x) and so on. I can't tell if the e is supposed to be a constant or the exponential function though...Sorry
The parametric equation is an element of first year university calculus. I haven't got round to solving curved parametrics yet.
Note: I only just passed the first year so I am no expert:)

Ok, so I have a nation, I have been adressing issues... I'm joining the UN and I am working on starting a/moving to a new region.... what else do I do? How do I know what my miliatry status is and if my ppl are happy etc? Do I just make it up and RolePlay or do new nations automatically start with a certain amout of weapons/troops etc and you just go on from there?
Thanks!

Happy RP-ing!
like everyone else, i just started recently, and am so happy that there is something to help noobs (newbies?) like me. thank you, wp, you are my hero. i have a few questions, however:
1. i am very new to online games in general, not even to mention role playing. i'm reading all these posts and seeing words like "noobs" , "omfg", "sticky", "tag", and "bump" and am very confused. could you perhaps post something like a glossary so us extreme babies can tell whats going on? i'm also unfamiliar with regular internet expressions, with the exeption of "btw" and "omg". help me!
2. for the moment, how do i play the game without all these pros figuring out i have no clue what's going on?
3. is poor spelling and grammar of posters any indication of their
intelligence?
4. how effective are the "emoticons"? i'll use one, then you can answer.
if you could answer these things for me, i'd be most appreciative. :D

Ooh look, it's the friendly little tag-monkey, come to slap a big TAG on the thread. This could come in handy...
How can I change what my nation is producing?
Thanks
if i read the first post right then this is gonna be a stupid question and it might have been asked in the other 11 pages that i didn’t read but I gotta get this straight
i can only be attacked if i let people attack me?
is that right?
i cannot be forcefully invaded? i cannot just invade a neighbor? i can just ignore all invites to war and live in peace
then what are the benefits to war? (in the game i mean i'm not looking for a debate)

um i have a question how do I get the crime to stop in my nation? I like the statistics of it but i want to change the crime.
I like to role play and i use to play Ultima Online which i loved, but i could see what i was doing and if i am understanding this right, you mainly have to use your imagination. I really like this game but not good at using my imagination for things like this. Pretending im going to war with someone is just silly to me, when you cant really do anything but talk. I guess my question is, is there something i can do to make it seem more real for me :?
