I've been getting the plague of the hybrid issue enough that I'm sick of it, and as such, I typically dismiss the issue because my nation has better things to worry about. So, rather than dismissing it, I decided to have fun with it today. My national animal is normally the weasel. But, today I changed it briefly to see what the issue would look like.

As you can see, the game just took my national animal and made a hideous hybrid! Imagine, dog breeding with dog! A dog-like dog... who'd've thunk it? :D
