Question with Issues

Hello.

I'm wondering about something, and I hope that someone can help me out.

If an issue says that certain laws are to be abolished, what would that give me? More Political Freedoms, less Political Freedoms? More Civil Rights, less?

Probably more 'Civil Freedoms', but I'd have to know exactly which issue it is before being more confident about that...

Well there are quite a couple of issues that have an option to abolish laws, and I was completely in doubt of what would that give me. The issue in question has been deleted, but I have something close to it that I'm questioning:

"Give Us Money!" Quoth the Poet

2. "Artists and poets should support themselves, like everyone else," replies Bianca Longbottom, spokesperson for the Capitalism Now Party. "The suffering taxpayers should be given a break. In fact, we should abolish all government subsidies for special interest groups."

Lower taxes, definitely; I don't think it affects any Freedoms...

Yeah, I thought about that.

I'll re-post whenever that issue comes back, or anyone similary.

Too Low On Laws, Say Citizens

The Issue
Various opinions have been brought to your attention over what your closest advisors are referring to as the 'anarchy situation'.

The Debate

Returning fire, both figuratively and literally, is Buy Dredd, biker gang leader and anarchist: "That there's anyone claiming to be a government is ludicrous. People should be allowed to determine their own fate and survival without fear of breaking these inhibiting laws! All government officials should be removed at once if this country is ever to become well and truly 'equal'!"
[vote issue nr 2]

What exactly does this do?

Increase civil freedoms and increase political freedoms. Decrease law&order.

Does anyone remember an issue that increases your Civil Rights while not decreasing your Economy or Political Freedoms?

And 2nd.. anyone knows a nation that has all the civil rights & economy & political freedoms at maximum?

I know of at least one: Socius (http://www.nationstates.net/socius). One of my puppets used to, but its political freedoms have slipped to Widely Abused.

It would be good to have some kind of secret police that could forecast the possible outcomes of the various decisions.
What I miss mostly from the issues is the oportunity to introduce new taxes. For example this "need for speed" issue. Why can't I just dismiss speed limits and start some tax proportional to the car's power/weight ratio's square? I want to tax the speeding before it happens not fine it after it happened. After speeding the speeder might not be alive and then how do I get my money?
The emphasis is on the TAX part, I dont care if there are speed limits or not, I play for taxes. Chances are there is a solution that would rise the tax, but it is not obvious which one it is.

I see...

However, I think that I'm getting the issue thingy afterall.
For example, on the following issue:

Arms Industry Demands Respect

The Issue
Representatives of R2Cruiter's arms manufacturing industry have expressed outrage over the lack of public and private support for their sector.

The Debate
Interviewed by the industry's trade journal 'Our Weapons, Your Victory', the CEO of R2Cruiter Arms Inc, Abraham Mistletoe, said: "It is shameful the way we have been treated over the last few years! Shameful! Our workers, and I tell you we have a great many of them, can barely get to work thanks to disruption by protestors and all that hippie nonsense. And as for this dangerous talk of 'Ethical Trade Practices', I say we need full government recognition of our vital contribution to the economy - relaxation of trade barriers, gun laws, and a crackdown on all these long-haired weirdos who try to shut us down!"

"We have a right to protest against this evil business!" screams Jazz Longbottom through a megaphone. "The arms manufacturing industry is a stain on our nation's character and must be removed. How can we make money from the production of these evil weapons; how can we stand by and profit from the blood spilled by these abominations? The government must take a stand and outlaw the whole sector!"

Your Minister of Trade advises taking a middle ground: "We can't ban arms sales without harming the quality of our military and police departments, not to mention the economy. These hippies do have a point though - guns are terrible things in the wrong hands. We should implement additional safety checks on the groups to which the weapons get sold. That way we don't lose too many sales, and the people are persuaded we are making a stand against nations who use the weapons for immoral ends. The arms industry get to sell their guns and the protesters get to protest. Everybody wins!"

What exactly will the first choice do? They say 'relaxation of trade barriers, gun laws, and a crackdown on all these long-haired weirdos who try to shut us down!'

Does the element of surprise not feature in your enjoyment of the game? You don't need to check the effects of every issue you receive before you decide on them. If you choose something that affects your nation in what you perceive as a negative way, then just wait for another issue to come round that will 'correct' it.

It is not that one does not want to vote on an issue because it'll ruin some stats, but rather (in my case) I do not understand what the issue talks about. Why would I vote randomly just to see what effects will it get?

You answered your own question there, to see what effects the choice will have.

My question was somewhat different.

If you played NS and you had to choose between 3 options written in chinese (you being a native american with no knowledge of chinese), you would pick one just to see its translation in english of what effects it gets once voted onto?

This is my problem. I do not understand what it talks about..

I thought it was fairly self-explanatory. The arms industry in your nation is complaining that the public do not support it. They want trade barriers lifted to make it easier for them to sell guns etc. to other countries, gun laws eased, to make it easier for people to carry guns and therefore buy them, and 'a crackdown on the long haired weirdos' - or to make it illegal for people to protest against the arms industry.

I have an issue on launching a space program which I am for. There are two options I am having trouble deciding over:
"Don't tell me space colonies wouldn't be cool," says excited fifth-grade teacher May Longbottom, still wearing big Spock ears from his last convention. "Think of how they would galvanize the national population! And there would also be some kind of scientific benefit, probably."

"The project certainly is feasible, but very expensive," says Album Sanguis Space Agency Head Hack Wu. "We could make it less of a burden on the taxpayers if we sought funding from private industry -- advertisements on the side of our rockets, selling contracts to the Arms Manufacturing industry, that kind of thing."

I am leaning for the second one but i am concerned about the Arms Manufacturing part of it... can anyone shead some light on this part?

First option will definately rise your taxes.
Second I think will boost your economy. About arms manufactoring, probably it will go up in the list of industries best developed in your nation.

Hello again!

Can someone explain to me what is the difference between Civil Rights and Political Freedoms?

How can I distinguish between Political Freedoms and Civil Rights in an issue?

Civil rights = your ability to go about your daily life without the government or anyone else stopping you. Obviously, this doesn't stretch to rape or murder, but you get the idea.

Political freedoms = how much say you have in the political process of your country, ie. your right to vote, protest, etc.

To distinguish the two, think of what the issue actually is about, then try and pigeonhole it in one of those two definitions.
