Why does Parliament set their own salaries?

[validity] must be a democracy

[description] Under @@NAME@@’s constitution, Parliament may set their own salary. Unfortunately, this led to a recent vote in which members unanimously tripled their pay. Watchdog groups have spoken out against this.

[option] “This is ridiculous!” shouts @@RANDOMNAME@@, leader of a protest group. “I say that Parliament can’t decide their own salaries! Let the voters set them! Of course, we would make sure that Parliament’s salaries were at least minimum wage. Oh, and hope that they don’t take illegal bribes.”
[effect] members of Parliament are often seen living in cardboard boxes
[stats] political freedoms up, corruption up, taxes down

[option] “I couldn’t agree less,” says @@RANDOMNAME@@, a member of Parliament. “Sure, some people might think that having eight cars and three secretaries is excessive, but I’m doing our country a valuable service. Where would you be without Parliament? And, really, if people don’t like my salary, then elect someone else. Obviously, I need to set my own salary.”
[effect] Parliament’s salaries are ten times what they were last week
[stats] political freedoms down, corruption up, taxes up, administration up

[option] “Well, it seems to me that as long as we have a Parliament, it’ll soak up money,” whispers @@RANDOMNAME@@, your cousin, in your ear. “We’re not stupid; we know what to do. Trust me, just abolish Parliament, make me your finance minister, your brother your minister of defense, that sort of thing. The government would be way more efficient that way.
[effect] Parliament has been abolished in favor of a single ruling family
[stats] political freedoms down, government size down, taxes down, no longer a democracy

My second issue. It could probably use a little work. Does anyone know a better word for "Member of Parliament?"

No, but I don't understand the "GDP per Capita" thing. It doesn't make sense...

I'll change it to "minimum wage"

I think it should be Members of Parliment, anything else would be too system specific... like refering to Senators or Congressmen... that is US specific where as nations such as UK, Aus and any other democratic nation has different names for such but they are all "Parliments" no matter what else they call them.

Well in previous issues the title 'Senator' has been mentioned.

I liked the issue, very original well done. :)

"Legislators", perhaps?

Senator is a more used term.

I'm with St Edmund; "legislators" is a broad term covering MPs, Senators, Reps, etc. And good issue, too!

I don't understand why the second option begins with, "I couldn’t agree less", because it seems like he is agreeing with Option 1. However, Option 1 says that voters should set the parliament's salary and Option 2 says that Parliament should set their salary, or that the citizens should vote in new legislators. http://ymwproductions.11.forumer.com/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif
