NAME
Corporate Expansionism?

DESCRIPTION
The East Blefuscu @@MAJORINDUSTRY@@ Company, one of @@NATION@@’s most powerful corporate entities, has used its profits to raise a private army and conquer the native Blefuscuan government. VALIDITY
Only valid for nations who have Powerhouse or greater economy
Only valid for nations with significant private industry (the nine rankings on the libertarian-economic side of the map: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/Tindalos/nspoliticalmap.jpg)
Only valid for nations who have 500 million or greater population

OPTIONS
[option] Director @@RANDOMNAME@@ meets with you whenever the company can schedule you in. “Yes, @@NAME@@ has a wonderfully liberal market policy. My company has created its own trade monopoly that benefits our nation as a whole. The best advice I can give you is to laissez faire—pardon my French.”
[effect] the local @@MAJORINDUSTRY@@ industry has led a corporate coup against the government
[stats] increase in economy, decrease in civil rights, decrease in political freedoms, significant increase in private sector

[option] “This is unacceptible!” rants civil rights leader @@RANDOMNAME@@. “Clearly this ‘invisible hand’ has got to be chopped off. Blefuscu is a sovereign nation, and our government must intervene to give the Blefuscuan people their land and freedom back, with reparations made for the atrocities they’ve suffered!”
[effect] third-world countries start incidents with @@NATION@@ just to receive reparations
[stats] decrease in economy, slight increase in government control

[option] Minister of Abstract Patriotism @@RANDOMNAME@@ chimes in, "Yes, this is unacceptible! Unacceptible that our private sector has to show the rest of us how to get things done; it's embarrassing! Pass an act that grants our government political, military, and financial control over the Company's affairs in Blefuscu (including this little 'private army' of theirs) and incorporate Blefuscu into our @@TYPE@@. We'll get new lands, and it'll show those lousy corporations who's in charge around here."
[effect] businesses try to avoid much success for fear of being federalized
[stats] decrease in economy, decrease in civil rights, decrease in political freedoms, significant increase in government control, increase in Defense Budget, increase in Administration budget, decrease in apathy (increase in patriotism?)

[option]"Hey, let's not forget how much the private sector has given us," reminds Director @@RANDOMNAME@@ of the struggling Neighborhood @@MAJORINDUSTRY@@, Ltd. "The problem comes with monopolies, when a company gains absolute control over a market. Just do a little trustbusting and give companies like mine subsidies to raise our own private armies to conquer our own sovereign nations."
[effect]many of the nation's companies have officially declared war on each other
[stats]increase in subsidies, increase in private sector, (not sure what all else)

[option] "Now don't get me wrong," mutters Lilliputian immigrant @@RANDOMNAME@@, "I hate corporate capitalism, I hate overseas conflicts, and I hate civil repression. But you ask me, those dirty Blefescuans had it coming! They've been oppressing my people for generations, and it's high time we get some of ours back." Immigration Minister @@RANDOMNAME@@ agrees: "Hatred is a powerful tool. Once people hear that we savagely attack the ethnic or political enemies of our immigrants, they'll flock to our borders!"
[effect]third-world countries grant numerous concessions to get on @@NAME@@'s "good" list.
[stats]decrease in civil rights, increase in political freedoms, significant increase in rudeness/racism, decrease in apathy, increase in Defense Budget, increase in ethnic diversity (if available)

[option] A marching band blares "L'Internationale" as red banners wave proudly during the May Day parade. @@RANDOMNAME@@ screams into your ear to be heard, "We knew the capitalists would sell us the rope with which to hang them, but we didn't think they'd be stupid enough to just GIVE it to us! The proletariat has been trained and armed by those who exploited them, and they shall now seize the means of production! Forward, comrades! The revolution has finally come to @@NAME@@!"
[effect]corporate soldiers have led a Communist coup against their employers and the government
[stats] whatever dramatically changes a government to totalitarian Communism :-)

Is that "Order 99" a play on "Order 66" from Star Wars Ep. III: Revenge of the Sith?

Umm, isn't the whole issue from "Star Wars"? Trade Federation, anyone?

Well, the initial part of it is from a hyperized version of (clearly) the British East India Company. It's supposed to play with the idea of your private sector wielding a significant international force.

Of course the Trade Federation from Star Wars came to my mind as well. Perhaps the last option is too cheesy a reference... give me a little while and I'll edit it to something more real-life.

But are there any suggestions for other options? I'm thinking of having a racist Lilliputian chime in, if I can fit it...

Have an issue from the hard-line communist that points to this as a sign of how awful business has proven to be and outlaws private enterprise. Let's go with some extreme stuff. :p

I loved the Communism idea, Czardas; I hadn't even thought of that.

Anyway, I just did a major edit. Other than a few word choice changes:

-Took out the gratuitous Star Wars influence in Option 3;
-Made Option 4, a monopoly-breaking choice;
-Made Option 5, an immigrant-sponsored racism choice (which may or may not be acceptible on NationStates); and,
-Made Option 6, a Communist coup choice.

I've found myself clueless on some of the stats (as fun as they are to make), so I'll probably just take the mods' advice and leave them blank when I submit.

Any helpful advice in its current state? Any feelings that it's not worth the trouble of submission? Thanks again, everyone.

Might be nice to explain what Blefescue was. Otherwise, looks good.

Damn, I like, though it's hard to choose from either increasing the economy or the defence budget, I guess it all depends on how large the increases are.

Ah, that would be from Gulliver's Travels. Blefuscu was a nation of tiny people, the rivals of Lilliput (just as France was the rival of England). NationStates issues already occasionally refer to Lilliputians (tiny people) and Brobdingnagians (gigantic people) as ethnic groups.

Or, did you mean that the issue should explain this? Nah, I think it's more fun to just use the name. From what I've gathered, they're not actually tiny or giant people in NationStates, and this issue is not meant to describe them as other than human beings. It's just a name of a nation/people that doesn't exist in the real world, but it's still somewhat recognizable.

Though, you technically COULD read the issue as dealing with tiny people...

EDIT: I just realised you meant that the description doesn't call Blefuscu a nation. Good call; thanks!
