Coup d'etat in your nation!

this is my first stab at an issue, constructive criticism would be appreciated
[original title was] Coup d'etat in @@NAME@@!
summary: During a state visit to a foreign nation, revolutionaries took advantage of your absence to seize government buildings, take workers hostage and proclaim a new regime.
validity: countries with elections
[option]"For far too long have we toiled under this corrupt so-called 'democracy' of the borgueoise pigs!" shouts revolutionary leader @@RANDOMNAME@@ at the top of his lungs, holding a knife to the throat of a terrified government worker. "Dissolve the government now!"
[effect]the national government has been dissolved and chaos reigns in the streets
[stats]crime increases dramatically, prisons are abolished, government spending falls across the board, size of government decreases drastically, taxes decrease, civil/political rights increase
[option]"The military is ready to storm the building and gun down these interlopers at once," says your Minister of Defense at an emergency meeting, standing up and pounding her fist on the table with a resounding *CRUNCH*. "We must demonstrate strength in the face of these enemies of democracy. A few hostages might get hurt in the scuffle..." Your Finance Minister interrupts: "...but we'll just cut taxes a bit and they'll forget about it, right?"
[effect]the military has quashed a recent coup attempt
[stats]defense spending increases, law & order spending increases, social welfare spending decreases, social equality spending decreases, taxes decrease slightly, economy improves, political apathy increases slightly
[option]Your Commissioner of Police, who also happens to be your brother, advises patience: "We can't just let them kill innocent people, which is exactly what they'll do if we attack them. The best idea is to surround them with troops and simply let them starve out. Maybe play loud music to bother them. Then we can use food and the 'off' switch as a bargaining chip. And impose martial law everywhere else while you're at it so nobody complains about the noise."
[effect]Parliament House has been occupied by cannibalistic revolutionaries for several weeks
[stats]political freedom and civil rights decrease, government size decreases, happiness decreases, crime decreases
[option]"Let's not let things escalate any more," advises media talking head @@RANDOMNAME@@. "Money can't buy love, but it can buy peace. If you paid several billion @@CURRENCY@@s to the hostage-takers, I'm sure you'd find them much more cooperative. Remember, it's better to spend money than spend lives."
[effect]bankrupt citizens routinely hold government workers hostage for ransom
[stats]crime increases, taxes increase, corruption increases

Me, too. I thought: "What the hell? Is some n00b trying to godmod the ousting of my government?"
Love the issue, btw.

i third that motion (notion?) coup on egg nog soup? weird but quite cool! :D :D :D
Because it reads the @@NAME@@ as yours when you llok at it, it happened to me too.
--Great issue by the way.

Right on. Good issue, I say.
Scared the crap out of me for a second, though. I thought someone had declared a war on me. :p :D

I'm pretty sure our names showed up in this thread because the author used the @@NAME@@ coding for our nation names. As (apparently) unintentional advertising it worked well because I normally could care less about issue construction, but I love this one. A little revolution beats the ever-loving tar out of beaverdam demolition or marital rights, at least it's fun!

Harrumph. Didn't work on me, I just like looking at new issues.
I like this one-wide range of choices, and quite comical as well.

I laughed my ass off when I saw the 'Coup d'etat in EuroSoviets' title and then realised it wasn't a godmodder or a psychotic ADN oligarch trying to overthrow my government *chuckles*
Prizes for those who spot the tautology.

Being mostly newbie, it scared the bejeezus out of me, too. It occurred to me there was some sort of code when I clicked the link that would put the viewer's nation name in there. But until I sussed that, I thought my semi-literate and rant-prone postings had pissed off too many people and they'd secretly convened to thrash me!
Dammit, I actually considered MODERATING MY OPINIONS for a few seconds! How frightening!

Well ya freaked me out! And BTW, I only glanced thru the first post... Never Ever Negotiate With Hostages! Painful as it is... mumbling to self... *damn... I've read too many books on this stuff*
Don't do that AGAIN!!! Sheesh! :P
Very weird...especially since i'm not on the II or any RP forums, i was wondering who'd want to RP with me. -.^
Fun issue, although number 4 feels pretty useless....aren't all the issues supposed to have an equal number of positive and negative effects?

and alot of people seem to have the same name as me... *sigh* I thought mine was original.... :(
Yeknomia
30-04-2005, 19:30
i think it is very original. However, I'm not sure you want to use the word "resounding" before crunch. Methinks resounding refers to a unanimus voice or something like that.
muy bien!

30-04-2005, 19:37
Oooh...I like this! How do we play it out? (I am a new nation)
Miravesel
30-04-2005, 20:20
Option 4 is the one that sounds acceptable on the surface ("money is cheaper than people") but has unintended consequences (i.e. copycat crimes).
re: resounding, it doesn't really flow to say you bang your fist on the table with a crunch. It just sounds funny without 'resounding'. One expects a descriptor before a word like 'crunch'.

lol. I thought someone was RPing my nation out, when I saw the issue on the forums bit on the main page of the site. I was like, "Damn it!" Very good issue, and good tactic - if you meant it that way - to get people to view it!

No, not at all - don't mind the extra viewership either, though :D

30-04-2005, 20:35
I think that option 2's effect could be more dramatic or humorous, it seems a bit bland.
Dude, scared me too. IT said Coup d-etat in Huntaer first... Interesting idea though.

That scared the crap outta me! I thought someone was RPing with me and didn't inform me...
But, fortunately, it was just a issue.
Miravesel
30-04-2005, 20:39
well, I couldn't find a better effect because it pretty much means you recapture control and everything goes back to status quo ante because you responded so quickly, and I wasn't sure how to add a 'collateral damage' phrase without making it way too long. :mp5: :mp5: :sniper:
Miravesel
30-04-2005, 20:41
Aw shucks who changed the title? I hope they change it back if they actually use the issue, I think it sounds better the other way.
I gotta say, i was almost pissed (mostly excited though) when i saw some one wanted to take me on, kinda dissapointed when i got here though.
the issue kicks some ass though

What about another option that said you give these guys a bit of your nations land to start their own state, and the amount of land you give them is proportional to the amount of people who leave your nation to go and join them?
Otherwise all the issues end up with someone dying, or someone taking over the government. And it doesn't seem fair that a tiny but violent sector of society gets to take over the country. Let them negotiate a bit.
Miravesel
30-04-2005, 20:46
Can't do that because the population would change plus you would technically be creating a new nation. The first option is surrender, the second is counterattack, the third is slow siege, and the fourth is negotiation (kinda).
Salusasecondus will fix the macro problem soon. I've changed the title to stop people worrying.
Nice issue!
Heres a little story about if I sent in the army:
"The buliding was stormed by the 5th Korsai Regional Defence force, entering through all the ground entrances, gunning down any resistance with freshley issued MP5's. All of the hostages were shot before they could be rescued.
Thousands of unhappy people are rising up in open revolt, looting and raging.
This is the begining of the Korsai civil war."

In most hostage situations a majority of the hostages survive especially if the attacking force knows what they're doing (which they would have to considering you are storming your own offices)
Artoonia
30-04-2005, 21:59
I like the idea, but I think how it affects stats needs some work:
[stats]crime increases, size of government decreases drastically, anarchy breaks out
If you mean the government type "Anarchy", you need high levels of personal, political, and economic freedom to get that, and one issue cannot (or should not) be able to move just any government type to it.
[stats]defense spending increases, law & order spending increases, taxes decrease slightly, economy improves, political apathy increases significantly
It's quasi-impossible to increase defence and L&E spending whilst still cutting taxes. Doubly so to still get a boost to the economy. Something here has to change or be cut.
[stats]beef-based agriculture increases, political freedom and civil rights decrease, government size decreases, happiness decreases, crime decreases
[stats]crime increases, taxes increase, corruption increases
These two are internally consistent; I don't think they need changed, except that I'm not sure how trying to "stave them out" helps the BBA industry.
Miravesel
30-04-2005, 22:35
Added specifics to first option, added cuts in other departments to second option (shift in gov't priorities), removed Beef Based Agriculture from third (that was from an earlier draft that had the gov't giving them food but nothing else)

Does this need to be copied into the submission form on the issues page to be considered?
Light Keepers
01-05-2005, 22:08
Yes, you have to submit this before it can be considered. Click on the link for entering new issues on the left side of the NS page. (You will only get the link, though, if your nation is over 500 million in population. If you're not big enough, you'll just need to wait until then.)
This is a really good issue and I certainly hope the mods accept it. <hint, hint ;)> If it is accepted, I'm looking forward to receiving it.
Shoshoni

The gentle approach first. Negotiate and let their fire burn down. Cut off all utilities and food supply, then bargain for hostages. If not successful then you must take them by force. Terrorism cannot be allowed to start. If you need assistance the Shoshoni will be glad to send warrriors to help with this delima.
