The youth of of @@NAME@@ are being corrupted by a nee form of language called "1337." This new language has come about because of the internet, and involves the butchering of the national language. Very interesting. Though, the Neo Kyushan people would never ban 1337. It is considered one of our secondary languages.

The schools of Mega-Opilis teach 733T (the correct, read original spelling) as an important part of their english classes,

It is considered socially unacceptable to submit bussiness forms that are not in 733T

There's one right option. Put in some negative side effects to option two.

Option 2:
"7h3r3 15 n07h1n6 wr0n6 w17h 1337 5p34k, 17'5 ju57 0ur w4y 0f 3xpr3551n6 0ur53|v35, 4nd 54v1n6 71m3," says student @@RANDOMNAME@@. "B4nn1n6 1337 5p34k fr0m @@NAME@@ w0u|d b3 f45c157."

is

"There is nothing wrong with 'leet' speak, it's just our way of expressing ourselves and saving time," says student. "Banning 'leet' speak from @@NAME@@ would be fascist."

EDIT: And I'll agree the issue isn't really.... er, good enough to be coded, no offense.

Well, the second option needs some (negative) additions... Actually, I would generally add a few more things, e.g. the IT sector might be boosted by option 2, killed in option one, on the other hand, say, agriculture or automobile manufacturing are boosted in option one, killed in option 2... Summarily mentioning all industries as being effected is a bad idea (well, in most cases <.<).

(And as a minor point, in this case, I would say it is civil rights, not political freedoms).

Which reminds me, I submitted a comparable issue ~ end of August...

Listen up you old people, the rule is if your older then 35 733T is incomprehensible

but in general, you take ASCII symbols that look like letter, say "3 = E"

sometime more then one symbol may be used in the construction of a single letter "\/\/ = W"

getting it yet?

Listen, you young whippersnappers. The rule is, incomprehensible speech in whatever form is just dumb. Age doesn't mean you don't understand it, it just means you're smart enough not to waste time producing or deciding it. BTW, I'm an old fart and UWF is a young whippersnapper (best guess). Age ain't nuthin' but a number, and 1337 ain't nothin' but silliness.

For what it's worth, I don't like the issue. It isn't that big a deal, nation-wise. Not worth coding.

It isn't that big a deal, nation-wise.

It might be, actually; some nations have a department of culture whose job it is to make sure the language and culture don't get 'corrupted'-- France banning email and replacing it with "courriel", for instance.

Then again, only in a nation with an extreme sense of nationalism/national identity, and if 733t started showing up on schoolwork, even in the exaggerated world of NationStates.

This really isn't a very good issue because no-one really uses 1337 to speak. Its fun though. That I can agree on. If this was made into an issue than this would be interesting.

It's a good idea, but not really worth making an Issue out of... most Nations have already instituted either Freedom of Language Laws or Linguistic Purity Laws in RP anyway, so this issue would most likely end up getting dismissed by the majority of Nations...

How about outlawing 1337 in a non ironic sense as a third option? pwnd!

Along the lines of

"they are just n00bs" says @@randomname@, an It professional, "1337 might be good when you are fragging on Quake, but in a non humourous sense its just embarassing. I say we allow it in humour, but not otherwise." "We could slip a campaign against it into everyone's favourate TV programs, never mind that it practically amounts to brainwashing."

"everyone's favourate soaps now feature scenes of characters being humiliated for non ironic use of 1337", Political freedoms fall, education rises, intellegence rises,

Not sure on the effects beyond the political freedom bit though...

I do use 1337, though normally not on this site. I recall only one thread, and it was a thread about 1337. Other than that, I don't use it on the forumns appart from R0xX0r5!!!1 in out of character just fooling around. That's about it.
