Why do the issues always seem to turn out badly?

Hi all,

I'm quite new to NS but it seems like whatever I choose for my issue of the day it results in the most negative possible outcome turning up on my front page! For example, choosing more free speech doesn't come back as "there is a free interchange of ideas in society" but "Roxleys' children are widely regarded as the most foul-mouthed in the region"! Is this meant to be realistic, in that the worst possible scenario happens more often than not (or at least that someone will always be there to put a negative spin on anything the government does) - is it just a deeply cynical game? Or is it just to keep you thinking about the potential consequences of any action? It's getting so I'm afraid to take a stand on any issues, curse my innate spinelessness and doormat-like nature. Does it get easier as you go along?

It's sort of funny but it's frustrating too, because I make choices with good intentions, thinking they'll be the best thing to do, and it always seems to come back and bite me in the derriere! I certainly wouldn't want to be in charge of a real country, that's for sure...

Hi all,

Or is it just to keep you thinking about the potential consequences of any action?

Yep.

I certainly wouldn't want to be in charge of a real country, that's for sure...

You are wise for one so young. :)

I just started as well, and I don't think they are negative, just a tad annoying. But there's always a simple solution ( :sniper: ). Hehe.

Today's issue: alternative power sources...I'm thinking a nuclear meltdown is probably in my future!

I know what you mean! I just started here a couple days ago and my country didn't start out as well as I liked but I figured that would change when I started making choices. But it seemed to get worse! I think what it is though is that it starts comming together once you play it more. I don't know though, that's just what I'm hoping!

I just started here as well...i don't know that i would call the issues negative, but i would say they make me think about things from different angles.

At first, you're overjoyed to get a new issue for your budding NationState. After reading the problem and your sparse options, you're plagued with debate as to what is the right course of action. Once a decision is reached, and enforced, your NationState responds with the most negative statement possible.

I think it makes you doubt your choices, next time. Also, it helps to parallel the real world by making every option not the right one, just the better one from one person's point of view. Plus, I think they're hilarious sometimes!

"The government has become increasingly militant, pharmacies close down as medicinal drugs are sold freely by the government, all guns must be registered, and prime commercial land is being swamped with archaeological teams."

Definitely not what I was going for, but funny none the less!

Yeah. It's like the only answers are the ultra-extreme.

I mean, when Diving Hawks started attacking people, I was like "Woah!"

So I okayed it for people to shoot a Diving Hawk if they were under attack. Next thing I know, Diving Hawks are being brought down by privately-owned surface-to-bird missile batteries and getting shot for looking at someone funny.

I would really like to find the person responsible for putting the most negative spin on everything and pull one of these: :sniper:

I meant the newspaper reporter who puts the worst spin on the headlines.

They're not all like that, the first ones mainly are though. Don't forget that it's just showing you the worst possible scenario there because that's what people and the media tend to focus on. What it doesn't say is 'your children are beaten at school for bad language or whatever the alternative worst possible scenario would be.

I think the reporters work for the UN. Executing UN officials is never a good idea...

But maybe I can arrange for some 'extremeist militant seperatists' to shoot them, and then we launch a manhunt that will be great at catching crooks and other enemies of the state, but damnit, we just can't find those extremeist militant seperatists..... Maybe if we had some more funding....

I'm a newbie here myself and what I have to say about the issues so far is this: everytime I read a new issue, I instantly formulate a course of action in my head. Then I read the three possible stances on the issue and not one of them comes even close to what I would actually do. (I'll say this though, at least the game gives you three major choices, while the American political system tries to force you to choose between two).
Anyway, I chalk it up to this: this is a FREE game offered to you. The programming that would be involved for it to be more complex would require more programmers who want to be paid.
Just play the best you can. I don't think this simulation comes even close to reality, but hey, It's kind of fun.

That is the point - no matter how 'good' a decision, the world media (remember you can only shoot the local journalists) is going to put the worst possible spin on the decision, so always getting negative feedback is actually believable.

Well most issues are negative aren't they? Well at best they are neutral, but the issues you get depend on the structure of your nation and randomly determined other factors. I have not yet have the issue about young children and I think that is because of my compulsory military service. Never know, could be completely wrong.
