Traffic accidents all over @@NAME@@ caused by distracted drivers, many of whom are talking on cell phones, have led safety advocates to consider the outlaw of cell phones in cars.

The Debate

1. "Hang up and drive already!" cry out angry protesters who are addicted to bumper-sticker cliches. "The use of cell phones in cars is a danger and should be banned! Pull over to the side of the road and yak if it's that important!"
[effect]roadside motorists gabbing away on cell phones is a common sight
[stats]safety increases, civil rights decrease

2. "Cell phones are OK!" shout out another group of angry protesters on cell phones. "People on cell phones don't cause traffic accidents. People not paying attention do, and i can yak away and drive at the same time! If you ban cell phones, you have to ban eating in cars, listening to radios in cars...hell you have to ban talking in cars! What kind of society would it be if you couldn't...wait a sec...can you hear me now? Good...OK, where were we...oh yeah, don't ban cell phones in cars!"
[effect]distracted drivers on cell phones are the nation's number one road hazard
[stats]safety decreases, civil rights increase

3. "There's no need to pick either solution," insists @@RANDOMNAME@@, head of the @@NAME@@ Department of Transportation. "All we have to do is require the use of hands-free devices or require that another person in the car talks while the driver drives. It's no different from working a radio, really...why I put my hands-free device in my car just the other day in...three minutes, yeah, three minutes..."
[stats]frustrated cell-phone addicts have taken to carpooling because they can't figure out the hands-free device for their phones
[stats]safety increases, environment increases, civil rights decrease, economy decreases

Not valid for nations that have banned cars.

Good! :) But I think you can lose the third option.

I agree, lose Option 3.

And for the record, Handsfree Kits make no difference to your driving ability. Especially if you've got an Automatic Transmission, you don't NEED both hands to drive with, and talking on a cellphone is no harder than listening to the radio or talking to one of your passengers.

Even in a manual transmission vehicle, it's not hard to change gears and talk on a cellphone.
