Idea for a third, middle-ground option on organ donation...

I just got the "pay for organ donation" issue. There are two laws I can make: one will forbid paying for organs, and the other will require the government to give people money for donating organs. The first will put organ donation at an "all-time low" (I'm guessing) and the second will have college students selling their kidneys. I don't want either of those.

I have an idea for a middle-ground solution, which is that organ donation payments could be like life insurance - you can only get them posthumously. A person can sign up to have their organs sold for transplants and whatnot after they die in a car accident or something, and their families (or someone else of their choosing) will get the money. This way you don't have people selling their kidneys or corneas or what have you while they're still alive.

Does this make sense to you folks?

Yeah, that one got me. Thiefs would start ripping out kidneys instead of looking for jewels, or we would lose organ donations resulting in much death. As I made organ harvesting compulsory(post death) I think I will say no organ sales, except it seems like a valid way for the poor to get money. They shouldn't have to but... I might even  DISMISS THE ISSUE!

Oh, if organ harvesting can be made compulsory, then I'm going to keep dismissing the "pay for organs" one. I'm worried about black market trading in organs and such.

i made it compulsory to donate organs after death, then i made it illegal to sell organs, and now my my description says something like "organ donation is compulsory, voting is voluntary, and organ donation has hit an all time low"!

guess i should have dismissed the money for organs one, but given that everyone has to donate their organs when they die, can't see why there's a problem with not letting people sell them while dead or alive, or how organ donation could have hit an all time low!

guess nobody's dying in my country (except the ones who need organ transplants...?). very puzzling.

Maybe *voluntary* donations are at an all time low :-)

Going beyond the words and numbers... since the only organ you can part with during life is one of your kidneys (unless you don't mind being blind), and since substance abuse tends to be highest amongst the poor, I would say letting the poor sell their kidneys would have a BAD effect on public health... especially if gambling is legal. Since organ harvesting is compulsory in my nation, and since public health care is well funded, we regard the people's organs as belonging to the state once they are no longer part of a living body. And we ignore the "all time low" since in this case it only means that the patient has to wait until someone dies, but then, ALL viable organs are ours to disburse as needed.
