Holidays Holding Back the Economy?

Because of multiple religions with their varying holidays, a slew of consumer holidays, ang generous sick policies and paid vacation policies, many employers often find themselves short-staffed while employees take extended breaks from work.

Validity: Not valid for nations classified as "devout" or "hard-working."

The Debate

1. "This is killing us!" cries out @@RANDOMNAME@@, CEO of @@NAME@@'s biggest @@MAJORINDUSTRY@@ business. "What we need is restrictions on how much time off people can take. People abuse our generous policies, and now we're stuck with lousy production! We need to stop making businesses observe all these religious holidays and give them only time off for major state holidays, like your birthday."
[effect]religious minorotes are up in arms over being forced to work on their holidays
[stats]civil rights decrease, economy increases, happiness decreases

2. "Are you kidding? Limiting time off?" shouts @@RANDOMNAME@@ of the @@NAME@@ Workers Federation. "We work hard to carry the economy of the nation, and if we want to take the day off for whatever reason, like a religious holiday, then we should have that right! That's no reason to fire workers; after all, we work when we're on the job, don't we?"
[effect]businesses are constantly short-staffed due to employees' extended vacations
[stats]economy decreases, civil rights increase, cynicism increases

3. "Clearly people don't work hard enough here," chimes in @@RANDOMNAME@@, your Secretary of the Treasury. "A poor economy's a poor reflection on all of us, and if people work more, that goes up. And people should have the right to take holidays off if they need to, but businesses should have the right to limit the number of holidays they can take off per year. They get the standard national holidays plus whatever their employer allows and no more; either that or employers can make them work weekends and stuff to make up their excess holidays. Whatever works for the companies."
[effect]religious minorities often work one weekend after another to make up for taking holidays off
[stats]economy increases, happiness decreases

4. "Holidays are for the weak, O Great Leader," says a strange woman in sunglasses, a hat and a trench coat. "These people are here to serve you; you are not here to serve them. It's sad you have forgotten that. Your economy would go way up if you worked all your citizens every day of the year for 12 hours. The weak and incompetent die off, the living make a subsistence wage, the kids start working when they're young and able, and the economy goes way up. It's a win for everyone."
[effect]citizens spend half their lives working and the other half sleeping unless they have government connections
[stats]civil rights decrease, rich-poor gap increases, economy increases

Stats could probably use some fine-tuning.

I like it, but I think you could probably lose the third option. :)

I will probably alter the third option once I get a good idea for doing so...

I actually like the third option ... it is what is happening in California. I'm a state employee and they are considering cutting one of our holidays without any pay increase in order to "get more work out of state workers".

Now as to if that is realistic or not ... that is another matter.

But I like the idea that we can steer some economic improvements at the expense of popularity through our issues.

hmm.. I say leave it up to the businesses to decide. If I want to restrict my workers holiday then fine and if they don't like it quit or don't sign up to work in the first place. NOt governments place but for business and individuals to deal with. I'd like a issue like this one but one where government would not interefere at all and tax would go down maybe economy go up as a result :)

another choice: Government stays out of the issue: taxes go down, economy goes up or stays same perhaps, people are just as happy as before as I said I want the busineses and people to individually decide the business doesn't have to let people off for christmas if they don't want to etc.

guess it doesn;t matter to my nation we're a devout and hardworking nation 8) :D
