Chickens = Graduated Tax. What?

I approved a bill to ignore the vegetarians of my nation and permit my citicens to eat cruelly treated chicken. Somehow, this decision got translated into this:
"The average income tax rate is 15%, but much higher for the wealthy."
Out of nowhere.
Also, I got a mesage about how Animal Liberationists are regularly jailed, which I guess sort of makes sense, but is still sort of a far stretch from "These nuts have got to be stopped," demands concerned consumer @@RANDOMNAME@@. "They need to face the fact people want snack packs, no matter how many innocent chickens must be sacrificed. Besides, chickens would do the same to us if they had the chance."
I chose the most liberal (in the proper sense, not in the current, absurd sense) policy available to me, and yet I still come out looking like a socialist. Is the only way to retain liberty for my people to dismiss all issues that I recieve? That's not very fun.

The "animal liberationists are regularly jailed" response makes sense; if the people involved in this particular issue are going to violate other people's property, then what do they expect? However, I too don't understand the drop in Civil Rights that occurs when this option is selected. How is protecting people's property violating civil rights? I suppose that such a position can be argued, but there isn't anything in the choice that seems to suggest such an arguement.
I think what the drop in Civil Rights is supposed to suggest is that the government is rounding up animal liberationists and jailing them simply for their beliefs, instead of only prosecuting those who have commited a crime. Again, I don't think the option suggests such a policy.

Also, my citizenry went from hard nosed and intelligent to just hard nosed. Doesn't protein affect brain development and critical thinking faculties positively? I always though that was the main reason why nearly all cults start out vegetarian.
Or perhaps my nation uses chickens as educators.

Maybe the intelligence became less conspicuous because people got more hard nosed.

It's odd that you got that statement. That language usually appears if option 2 for Issue 18, Citizens Struggle Under Unfair Tax Burden is selected. Did you make such a choice in the recent past? I've never experienced a tax increase when jailing PETA types. Did you notice an increase in the size of the government as well?

I'd been striving for Capitalizm (having since reached it) so if I did get that issue I would surely have opted for less taxes if anything.

Does anyone have any chickens?
