New issue concept: Mad Cow Industry?

10-03-2004, 21:54
Thanks to a healthy economy, citizens of @@NAME@@ have become connoisseurs of fine beef, buying only the best cuts from their local butchers or major groceries. The beef industry has taken to selling lower-grade meats, which make up the vast majority of their product, at predatory prices in the poorer countries of @@REGION@@ to cut their losses.

Validity: Nations with regionally strong economies and/or Beef-Based Agriculture sectors

1) As you approach your office, noted anti-globalization activist @@RANDOMNAME@@ angrily waves a letter from the agricultural minister of your northern neighbor, screaming, "@@NAME@@'s free-trade ethics are destroying their beef sector! @@RANDOMNAME@@ says here that sales of middle-grade beef up there are off 75% thanks to imports they can't compete with -- and the rest of the region is in the same position! We owe it to the international community to force our beef products off the foreign market immediately."
[Effect]Homegrown beef is sold only within the borders of @@NAME@@
[Stats]Economy down, Beef-Based Agriculture down, Corruption Level down, Compassion up

2) An e-mail from @@RANDOMNAME@@, a major political donor and CEO of beef giant BoviGroup, counters, "We're not starving the people of @@REGION@@ here; we're feeding them in ways they could never afford otherwise. Besides, you have to realize, this nation has over 50 million @@CURRENCY@@ worth of Standard- or lower-grade carcasses in cold storage that we count on selling. Cutting off international sales could total Beef-Based Agriculture in @@NAME@@."
[Effect]Cheap hamburger from @@NAME@@ is available everywhere in the region
[Stats]Economy up, Beef-Based Agriculure up, Compassion down

3) "I want to know what we're doing raising cattle for food anyhow," notes office intern @@RANDOMNAME@@ while munching a celery stalk. "They're treated cruelly from birth to death, our factory-farming practices are an ecological travesty, and frankly, these animals present a risk of Mad Cow Disease to everyone who eats them. We need to stop selling beef, period: here, out there, or anywhere! Um... just my two cents' worth, sir," the staffer concludes, and gets back to work.
[Effect]Beef-raising is outlawed as the country moves toward veganism
[Stats]Beef-Based Agriculture eliminated, Trout Farming up, Compassion up, Environment up, Economic Freedoms down

4) Before you leave for your daily beef-based lunch, you get a visit from delegate @@RANDOMNAME@@, whose district is dominated by agricultural interests and low-income families. "I've been thinking about the beef question," the legislator says, sketchily placing an arm around your shoulders, "and it sems to me we can take care of it without hurting anyone. We need foodstuffs for our school lunches and soup kitchens; industry needs to sell perfectly edible meat. Wouldn't a few well-placed government contracts to get me -- I mean, us -- some surplus beef have a positive impact on everyone?"
[Effect]Welfare recipients are treated to a steady diet of low-quality beef dishes at taxpayer expense
[Stats]Commerce up, Welfare up, Tax Rate up, Corruption Level up

~bump~

Glad to hear it's getting good reactions... it's actually based on the US's own situation, where we (Yanks) send lots of dark-meat chicken into Mexico... probably other products too, but that's the one I know about.
