On The Top 20 "Nicest" Nations?

08-03-2004, 18:35
Perhaps I'm just strange myself, but I caught the UN list of Pacific Nations in order of what were thought to be the "nicest" to the "least nice," but I found it odd that the 19th nicest nation was The United Socialist States Of Ommony.

Why do I think this is odd? The nation's motto is the answer to that question:

"A conservative government is an organized hypocrisy"

Call me crazy, but founding the ideals of an entire population based on the open insult of large groups of people doesn't seem like something that should qualify a nation to be considered the 19th nicest of the hundreds under the same category to me. Regardless of anyone's opinion of conservatives, the fact remains that the 19th "Nicest" nation in its listing in NationStates has a blunt insult for a motto.

Maybe I'm just new, and a nation's friendliness is determined by other factors, but if that's the case, what is the value (or reliability, for that matter) of a system that identifies such a nation as one of the top 20 nicest, friendliest of them?

My concern isn't really about political issues here, either. Don't go calling me a racist right wing nut for this post; I'd have risen the same question about someone whose motto was something equally insulting of liberals, environmentalists, smokers, or whatnot. My issue isn't the politics here, it's the accurate judgement of a nation's good nature, that's all.

The 'niceness' of your nation is judged on what you decide in issues. It doesn't take any notice of your customiseable fields.

The discrepency (there are so many possible discrepencies in NS) is because the nation's motto, name, title, and just about anything the player has direct control of, aren't factored into the rankings at all. The rankings are automated, and based on behind-the-scenes variables. The variables are, in turn, determined by your choices on the issues and the questions you answered when you joined.

I said it better :P

Maybe, but I know exactly what I'm talking about.

And regardless of how well either of you point out that it's impossible to judge a nation's niceness based on their mottos by way of automated systems, it still means that the 19th nicest nation categorizes a very large group of people as an organized hypocracy. =P

Besides, how do certain issues get judged by way of niceness? If I allow the death penalty in my nation rather than try to rehabilitate murderers, am I "nice"? Or should I be judged as being mean to the innocents of my country? Methinks there's a bit of bias going on, whichever way ya look at it. I never thought it was very nice to let serial killers go. I'd rather be nice to the innocents of my country, not the killers.

Any option which will make your citizens nicer to each other will raise your niceness. There's usually an explanation beneath where it says UN report.

Not in the MI rankings of course.

I hate the MI rakings. So dreadfully boring, pointless, and biased towards capitalist countries. :P

you're a right wing nut

you're a right wing nut

Well, that was short, insulting (because I'm not a republican), and pretty uninformed. Mind telling me why I'm a nut? Or a far right wing one for that matter? It's not even that you called me a right wing nut that bothers me so much as the fact that you're basically trying to insult me, and you won't even take the time to tell me what you think I'm doing wrong (most likely because my logic would kick your ass no matter what you say).

So keep posting your one-breath insults and minor comments. They're not useful, not informative, and not important. And now you've just wasted some more of my time by making me respond to you so I can get some peace of mind.

Go away, or at least write a real message, with real subject matter.

I do believe that RomulanStar was joking, and called you a right wing nut specifically because you said not to do that in your original post. If you had any sense of humor whatsoever you would not have reacted so strongly to this. I think you should just lighten up and learn to take a joke.

Being a maddox fan, I know my subtle humor when I see it. If he wanted me to take that as a joke, he could have always quoted me asking not to be insulted. The only signs of a joke there were the ones your interpretation came up with. How do you expect me to be able to interpret the intentions of a 5 word sentence?

I didn't react so strongly because I have no sense of humor. I reacted so strongly because I'm accustomed to putting up with people who no sense of humor. It's like hearing the phone ring and expecting it to be a telemarketer before picking it up. Of course there's a chance that you could be wrong, but why gamble on the less likely outcome?

I'm sorry, The SoBe, but I have to agree, you don't have much of a sense of humor. The whole point of this game is political wackiness carried to extremes. It's an advertisement for a book, Jennifer Government.

Yeah. The rankings are not meant to be helpful to players in any manner; they're just meant to add a little competition to the game. The meanings of the rankings are actually quite hollow.

So I have to think everything under the sun is funny in order to have a "sense of humor"? I admit I felt pretty dumb when the initial ironic joke was first pointed out to me, but the added insult to my personality made me reconsider apologizing for going off on a tangent.

Seriously, normally I would have just responded with an "Oops, my bad, I'm an idiot." but being told I had no sense of humor whatsoever put me on a defensive. Trust me people, I'm quite good enough at making an idiot out of myself, I don't need any outsite help.

Quit looking at everything in one dimension, people. Anybody who has a sense of humor is allowed to be serious once in a while.

I made a mistake, made a moron out of myself, and would have been happy enough to accept that if nobody felt like they had to insult me to make me realize it. Now have I quenched your thirst for security at the expense of other people's mistakes?
