Away, ye Biker Gangs!

Argh, somehow, for one reason or another, my nation turned into an anarchy. As it stands now, it is superb-powerhouse-world benchmark. The thing is, I don't want it to be anarchy. Is there anyone out there who can help turn it into superb-thriving-superb...or anything that would turn it back into a civil rights lovefest? Argh....

Just fund more gov't programs - you can certainly afford it, and it would help with that crime rate, too.

If you have high UN rankings, you're usually a biker gang. Or so it seems.

Hey, Anarchy is quite an achievement! It means you're at the high end of the scale in all three scales: Personal Freedom, Economic Freedom, and Political Freedom. Sounds pretty good to me...

I know. But, I want a government, not biker gangs. I'd say it's a bit...pushing it. Of course, I like the rankings. I don't like the category. Max Barry has some weird politics...US has a powerhouse economy, doesn't it? Political freedoms are great, so are civil rights...we're not ruled by biker gangs :P

I wonder how biker gangs translate into high rankings

The USA is medium civil (or lower than Europe, anyway), high economic, medium or high political (I'd say medium, after September 11). Which makes us, I believe, Capitalist Paradise or Corporate Bordello, not Anarchy.

The Issue

The National Poetry Society of The Zoogie People is demanding government-funded programs to promote the arts, especially poetry.
The Debate

1. "We need government help to promote culture." says Fleur Licorish, chairperson of the National Poetry Society of The Zoogie People. "Poetry is the soul of our nation, the very pulse of humanity! We will ultimately be judged according to our contribution to artistic enlightenment. In other words, please provide funding for our humble mission to bring the beauty of poetry to the masses!"
[Accept]

2. "Artists and poets should support themselves, like everyone else," replies Zeke Christmas, spokesperson for the Capitalism Now Party. "The suffering taxpayers should be given a break. In fact, we should abolish all government subsidies for special interest groups."
[Accept]

3. "Poets--who needs them?!" scoffs Jack Jones, Chairperson Emeritus of the Troglodyte Coalition. "These long-haired troublemakers should all be lined up against the wall and shot! That would be far more entertaining than reading some dumb poems!"
[Accept]

The Government Positio

Should I fund this?

Pay no attention to the "biker gangs". NS will give your nation this description automatically if you have enough freedom (anarchy), even if your crime rate is zero (and it will call a free nation an anarchy even if that nation also has an "enormous" government).

Also, there's more to being Anarchy than just what the three indicators say. I've had a nation at Excessive/All Consuming/Widely Abused, but was a Corporate Bordello.

In other words, you can pull back on some freedoms without killing your stats. It's just much harder.

Also, Rational Self Interest is correct. Every single Anarchy has the line about biker gangs, just like every since Capitalist Paradise (for instance) has: "population of [...] are either ruled by a small, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which."

Alright. My main problem is that crime went from 'relatively low' to 'a problem' simply because I allowed corporations to donate to politicians. In other words, becoming an anarchy increased my crime rate tremendously.

Becoming an Anarchy didn't increase your crime rate. What increased your crime rate was a larger gap between the rich and poor among The Zoogie People, which was caused by letting corporations have more control of your government. When you took that option, your taxes went down, and probably your tax description changed from something like "much higher for the wealthy" to a "flat income tax".

That isn't even really anarchy. Real anarchism is just as much opposed to capitalism as it is to government.

No, quite the opposite. A democrat. I was just desperate to get my economy up for spending on NS - I made a rather large order on a storefront, wouldn't look good if my economy plummeted.

But I'm happy at thriving economy. NS is different from RL politics for me.

So I was happy and decided to not do any more issues, because I'm in the perfect world, and then UCPL was passed, my economy goes up to Powerhouse, and I'm an anarchy again :( And i'm doing issues to desperately lower something :P

According to Distributed Thought's table, the only difference between an anarchy and a civil rights lovefest is the economic component. Trash your economy enough and you'll go back even if your civil rights and political freedoms remain high.

As for the poet's issue, all opt. 1 does is increase your taxes. You can lower economy by chosing pro-union options on the issues, funding government programs, and admitting refugees.

Nothing, except raise all three categories. Okay, I've increased military spending and put the police force on a recruiting drive. The first one is pending; the second did nothing but lower crime. Oh well. 'Tis a slow process. I don't want to trash my economy; just want to keep it at Thriving so I'm not an anarchy.
