The Supreme Court Issue

02-12-2003, 15:46
Now, I'll have to admit about the Supreme Court being pretty important, but *why* is it so political. I could put anyone as the supreme court, but the choices that I was given were rather ludicrious. A 5-star General who's talking about weapons? If I remember correctly, the Supreme Court isn't about which group gets more rights or money, its about what laws are to be upholded in the country. I know, that with the president having to pick a supreme court justice, that tends to make it political, it still isn't as bad as that "issue" made it out to be.

Basically I'd like to say, could we either fix that "Issue" or just get rid of it entirely, since it doesn't make alot of sense.

I know nothing about any supreme court, but voting for a general means a militaristic aproach to matters, thus more funding for the military.
I rather vote for the Tomato 8)

um...i thought that but this should probably be in the "got issues" forum but on the subject i can't really see why you would want a general, reverand, gay activist or a green party person to be head of justice personally i would want a judge but there you go

It is political. Justices have always been very influential in the way our government is run. The gay guy, for instance, will vote to strike down laws and overturn decisions that infringe on the right to privacy while upholding laws and decisions that do the opposite. The general will do his thing for defense spending and possibly law enforcement as well. Also keep in mind that the Supreme Court has the power to clarify and interpret possibly vague laws in their decisions. The Second Amendment, for instance, and whether or not a fetus can be considered a person. This is why it's so political. Hell, the US would probably be a lot different than it is today (probably for the worse, in my opinion) if it hadn't been for the Supreme Court giving itself the right to say whether or not a law is constitutional like that.

okay, i'm not saying that the supreme court *isn't* political, i'm just saying that the way they are describing them isn't it. Justices don't have a part in funding and stuff like that. thats my point. :) thank you.
