The Environment

23-11-2003, 03:16
Why is my environment described as a "barren, inhospitable wasteland" when I haven't even chosen any issues to do something like that? Also, can I choose options that can change my nation into an "environmentally stunning" nation, and if so, which ones?

well, it depends on the questionare you took when you started your nation (don't ask me which affected the enviroment). anyway, when you get the uranium mining issue, you can choose to leave it alone and that might help the enviroment. also, if you act anti-big business on your issues, it will probably strengthen the enviroment

Doesn't that mess up the economy though?

Everything in NationStates is a tradeoff. If you want a pristine environment, you'd better give up your hopes to be the world leader in mining and woodchipping.

Choices, choices....

Not necessarily, but you've got to be clever at it. I had an "Imploded" economy for a long time before I realized how to protect the environment and improve the economy. I'll probably never have "Frightening", but I'm content with "Good".

It's all about moderation (no, not you game/forum mods...). My secret is to always allow some uranium mining, and subsidize the hell out of my economy. It's kept me as a frightening economied Anarchy, with plenty of lush forests. Though I do rank #14 in North America when it comes to most subsidized industry... Oh well.

The Uranium mining issue is an environmental giveaway. Unless your economy is in the toilet, take option 2 (Don't allow any mining). It will hurt your economy a little and help your environment a lot.

I don't know what so many people are complaining about, look at me, I have good economy and environment, the environmentally stunning descriptor still comes up for my nation. :)

and if it weren't for all those stupid UN Environmental resolutions that kept dropping my economy back every time I get to thriving or powerhouse, I probably would have an even better economy by now if my nation hadn't been a part of the UN.

and before anyone asks, no, those UN environmental resolutions did not help that much in keeping my environment up there, because I had always picked sensible resolutions to issues and didn't go infringing on my environment even knowing I had some cushion to fall back on if I needed it. I just didn't completely waste my economy for it, that's all. :P

Actually, selecting the save the rainforests option in the Uranium Mining issue also increases your economy because you get eco-tourism. I've been subsidizing autos (based on a tip-off I saw on this forum)to boost my economy with the result that I'm environmentally stunning with a frightening economy.
