Slanderous Sleaze Slams Society

Only yesterday, a pirate radio station was found, broadcasting mainly slanderous and fictional propaganda against your Government. What do you do:

1 "This is outrageous!" says your top Advisor, @@RANDOMNAME@@. "How can you run a country when citizens are sitting in their own illegal broadcasting stations, telling the world about how you '...like to test your new weapons on beggars on the street...' and '...spend all your time playing on online games, instead of leading your country...'. People will believe anything they hear these days, there is only one solution: Ban all non-Government radio. And do the same with TVs, too."

2 "You can't be serious? Ban all the TV and radio stations? That's blatant censorship, and goes against free speech and civil rights!" says '@@COUNTRYNAME@@ for the People' leader @@RANDOMNAME@@. "No, you must allow them to broadcast. Maybe, though, you can slip them a few hundred thousand @@CURRENCY@@s in a suitcase when no-one is looking, or accidentally build a new athletics stadium on top of their station if you can afford it, to keep yourself free from criticism. That way, everyone is happy."

3 "Well, there's no denying it, this radio station is bad news for you, but you can't ban free radio. Still, this is a pirate station, so it can't be seen to be free from the law." Says @@RANDOMNAME@@, a member of the 'We Love the @@COUNTRYNAME@@ leadership' fan club of yours. "No, what you need to do is just have the lot of them arrested for operating a pirate radio. Keep telling the population that they are free to do what they want, as long as they follow the law. That's the simple answer.

4 "I'll tell you what," says top 'The Government Sucks' pirate radio DJ @@RANDOMNAME@@, "we'll give you half of our profits from membership and such, if in return you allow us to broadcast legit, or at least make no attempts to do anything against us. Makes you real rich, ya see, and it would be a travesty for you, letting this little money-spinner slip your grasp, wouldn't it? Your call, mate, but I advise you think about my offer."

As I see it, option 1 reduces political and civil freedoms, option 2 increases both, and option 3 keeps everything level, or maybe reduces civil rights slightly at most. Option 4 would naturally raise the economy, plus political freedoms, but I put it in last because perhaps it should be left out, leaving the top 3 options. Any thoughts? Particularly a name would be helpful....

BUMP - any opinions whatsoever? Even "good" or "needs work" would do for me....

First one ever. I'm hoping to come up with a few others tho...

I like it, except maybe for the last one. It sounds.....under the table. While I think its a good option, I'm not too happy how it would raise all three catagories. It's like praising someone for a bribe. It's pretty much paying the government for letting them get special privlages as well as freedom of speech, which in my opinion should be given anyways. While it should raise the economy, don't you think it should lower something like civil rights or political freedoms as it gives the privledged more power while the normal man less rights. Just my humble opinion.

Otherwise, great work and I hope you do create more issues!

Spose you have a point there, I'll modify it in the morning...

I actually like option 4. It gives the people with a less moral tendency the option to truly express themselves. God knows that not all of government is on the up and up,, and with some of the role playing characters that we have on NationStates, I think it gives them a fair option to continue in their role. You know the type,, nasty dictator,, or even like me.. corporate bordello types.. anything to build business and raise the economy... Plus, it could provide a way to decrease taxes on the fair market as an added benefit!!!

I agree it should say, but should they be rewarded in all three catagories for their evilness? It should raise economy, but don't evil leaders usually have less political freedoms? If so, than why should the 4th option raise it?

Because by accepting the bribe in option 4, you are allowing citizens to voice their political opinions freely, without even having to buy a legitimate frequency for their (pirate) station....

As promised...

1 "This is outrageous!" says your top Advisor, @@RANDOMNAME@@. "How can you run a country when citizens are sitting in their own illegal broadcasting stations, telling the world about how you '...like to test your new weapons on beggars on the street...' and '...spend all your time playing on NationStates, instead of leading your country...'. People will believe anything they hear these days, there is only one solution: Ban all non-Government radio. And do the same with TVs, too."

option 1 reduces political and civil freedoms

Self reference to NationStates should probably changed to "online games".

Stats: citizens are outraged as government thugs destroy all televisions and radios in the nation.

Effects: Poli and Civil rights down, happiness down, youth crime up, apathy up, retail sector down (no ads, donchaknow), industry in general down, health up (no more couch potatoes), publishing up, censorship up, population intelligence down.

2 "You can't be serious? Ban all the TV and radio stations? That's blatant censorship, and goes against free speech and civil rights!" says '@@COUNTRYNAME@@ for the People' leader @@RANDOMNAME@@. "No, you must allow them to broadcast. Maybe, though, you can slip them a few 100,000@@CURRENCY@@s in a suitcase when no-one is looking, or accidentally build a new athletics stadium on top of their station if you can afford it, to keep yourself free from criticism. That way, everyone is happy."

option 2 increases both

"100,000" should be spelled out as "a few hundred thousand".

Stats: television and news broadcasts are increasingly pro-government

Effects: Civil/Poli freedoms unchanged (as you're just bribing them), apathy up, corruption up.

3 "Well, there's no denying it, this radio station is bad news for you, but you can't ban free radio. Still, this is a pirate station, so it can't be seen to be free from the law." option 3 keeps everything level, or maybe reduces civil rights slightly at most

Looks okay.

Stats: police crackdowns on illegal radio stations have increased in frequency

Effects: crime down, police up, happiness down, personal freedoms down a bit

4 "I'll tell you what," says top 'The Government Sucks' pirate radio DJ @@RANDOMNAME@@, "we'll give you half of our profits from membership and adverts and such, if in return you allow us to broadcast legit, or at least make no attempts to do anything against us. Hrm. Pirate radio stations don't usually have advertisments...

Done. Thanks. I thought after the NS birthday thing it would be alright, but you are a mod and I am not.... :)

Stats: citizens are outraged as government thugs destroy all televisions and radios in the nation.

Cool :D

Effects: Poli and Civil rights down, happiness down, youth crime up, apathy up, retail sector down (no ads, donchaknow), industry in general down, health up (no more couch potatoes), publishing up, censorship up, population intelligence down.

Yup. Sounds about right to me.

"100,000" should be spelled out as "a few hundred thousand".

Also done.

Stats: television and news broadcasts are increasingly pro-government.

Cool. :D

Effects: Civil/Poli freedoms unchanged (as you're just bribing them), apathy up, corruption up.

Yup. Also sounds good.

Stats: police crackdowns on illegal radio stations have increased in frequency.

Cool once again :D

Effects: crime down, police up, happiness down, personal freedoms down a bit.

Once more, sounds right.

Umm....very true.....Also edited....

Thanks Hack! :D :D

So what do you think? Any chance of it being submitted to the players?

Hack, you kinda got the [stats] and [effects] thing the wrong way 'round. Stats are things like 'economy decreases' and such.

Effects are the little sentences in your nation's spotlight.

Just one thing I'd change: Effects: citizens are outraged as government thugs destroy all televisions and radios in the nation.

I'd cut out 'in the nation.' Seems kinda clumsy, but that's just my humble opinion.
