You should get rid of it immediately

# "Put to death? Is this really the type of person you want to listen to?" Says Thomas Barry. "Everyday I thank God that I'm an agnostic and don't need to believe this nonsense. Religion shouldn't have anything to do with our government. You should get rid of it immediately!"

Grammatically, what is the last sentence supposed to mean? Get rid of religion or government, or alternately getting rid of "religion having anything to do with our government".

That particular issue (I'm sure most of you know it) has no option that simply people to choose which is an unfortunate flaw.

What is "That particular issue has no option that simply people to choose which is an unfortunate flaw." supposed to mean? It makes far less sense than, "You should get rid of it immediately". I see your point; that sentence is a bit vague as to what should be gotten rid of, but it's not too hard to figure out that my good friend Thomas Barry means the government should purge any influence religion has over it.
