I think this qualifies as a homework help post.

I feel it's the sort of thing that should be left open, but obviously I'm not a mod...

I've decided to let it live. It doesn't appear to be conventional homework. It's homework, but it's not asking people to solve a problem, but it's rather gathering opinion. I'm putting this into the grey area.

The precedent against homework posts is very well established here. Not everyone here agrees with it, but it is among the rules set forth in this forum.

He could have concocted the survey and put up, saying he was doing it for shits and giggles. Even if he were secretly doing so for a homework assignment, if he doesn't explicitly say he is, that would probably be OK. A mod might consider it simply opening a topic for debate.

Putting up a survey and explicitly asking for help with a homework assignment is not kosher here. It probably will get locked.

In light of Kryozerkia's post that came in whilst I was typing mine:

I honestly think this ruling opens up a proverbial Pandora's Box. It can lead to "well, why is THIS homework thread OK whilst that homework thread got locked?" It arguably creates too many headaches for mods to interpret one type of homework thread compared to another.

For the record, so I don't look like an old fuddy duddy (even though I *am* one ), I'm not bothered by homework threads per se, but I fall into the camp of "a rule is a rule" in this case.

In my opinion, he's not asking for answers to any problems. I distinctly remember answering questions from a survey Reploid Productions put in General quite awhile back, granted before we had a homework rule probably.

If any reference to it being for a class and getting an A were removed, there probably wouldn't be any question. People create surveys for NS General pretty frequently, or at least ask them questions. Like Kryozerkia, I'd let it stay.

not a mod.

it's been allowed in the past. people make a 'quiz' on another site and ask others here to take that quiz.

It's not like other homework posts that ask for answers.
