Forums fall down, go boom... and rise from the ashes!

You may have noticed the forums down for a while... and now they're back. From what our colleagues at Jolt tell us, it was an internal DNS server outage, which they've resolved.

Now, I am the LEAST technically inclined person I know so... I'm probably the worst person here to ask "but what caused it" or "what does that mean". ;)

DNS is the domain name server.

The URL you see at the top is the domain name. It masks an IP address, which is the real address of this site on the web (82.133.85.11). The name makes it easier to access the site, since the IP address may be dynamic (it updates).

A DNS server resolves the IP address to the name. When there is an outage, the server is unable to resolve the name to the numerical address, and hence the site becomes unreachable until the issue is resolved.

Ah, danke!

Now I know slightly more than nothing about technology. :)
