I'd like to ask why the First date etiquette (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?threadid=572866) thread was closed:confused:

Perhaps because it got too long? If thats the case, make another one.

It's half the size of the dutch thread...somewhere it's laid out how long a thread has to be to get closed, and I'm certain we're not near it yet. Nor am I about to restart a thread if it was closed for another reason, and risk antagonising the mods.

Two threads on the closing of the 'First Date Etiquette' thread. Wow.

Because it was spam in excelsis, bloggy and had long since wandered away from the topic.

Which could be said of plenty of threads, that just happened to be one I finally noticed.

It was just a lull in the sex talk. It would have gotten back on topic again. It was not spam, it was sexy goodness.

So don't do it in the streets and frighten the horses.

I would love to stay and bandy quips on this topic, but, alas, it's my lunch-hour. Pray leave your visiting-cards in the silver salver at the door.

I'm guessing the note I left there is file-13, huh?

The topic is sex...apart from a very few pages out of the couple of hundred that are there, we stayed pretty much on topic. I'd say for an NSG thread of ANY size, that extremely low level of off-topic posting is pretty rare.

In terms of the 'blogginess' of it...the topic itself lends itself to anecdotes...in the main we're not debating 'factual' issues, we're discussing issues related to attitudes, social conditioning, personal comfort levels etc. With that sort of very opinion-based focus, it's bound to be more personal and 'bloggy' in nature than if we were pulling in sources and studies. Nonetheless, the sharing involved remains on-topic.

Whatever spam there is in that thread, perhaps best defined as off-topic, chatty posting, seems to me to also exist at a fairly low ratio to on-topic posts. Questions are posed, people respond, and a certain amount of responses to the responses are posted. I think it's important to note that sex is still a topic that is, in the main, a difficult subject for most people to talk about openly. The sort of joking, friendly banter going on in that thread helps ensure that the topic doesn't become too uncomfortable. I think that's essential to keeping such a topic open, accessible, and welcoming.

I'd like to note that this is one of the few topics of this size that has not become acrimonious on any level, despite the fact that we in fact are discussing some fairly controversial subjects. Posters who sometimes are unable to interact in any positive way have been able to do so in this thread.

This thread can come across as simply light-hearted fluff, but I don't think that's a fair characterisation. We've discussed gender roles, sexual 'conditioning, taboos and the social underpinnings of those taboos, healthy and unhealthy relationships, and so on. With all that being said, I hope that the decision to close the thread will be reconsidered.

I second Sin's explanation of why this thread should not have been closed.

For 270 or so pages, the thread has remained good-natured and friendly, which is quite a feat on this forum. The meanest comments on it are obviously jokes.

I don't really think it's bloggy at all. It's a discussion between various posters about their opinions and experiences with issues relating to sexuality. It's stayed basically the same in format from very early on, with occasional lulls in the conversation with some idle chit-chat.

I'd say it's NSG's best thread right now, and the best one in a long time, too.

On-topic? I had to go back five pages before I found a topic (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14283621&postcount=4146) -- any topic -- being offered (and it apparently disappeared into the chocolate mousse).

Another vaguely discussable idea shows up around post 4069, but doesn't actually get discussed much.

I note that Neesika was bored earlier on by two pages of exchanges.

I'm fascinated to learn who's a dainty fluffy-bunny type.

But the purpose of General is not to provide a forum for Generalites' sex fantasies.

Nor is it my purpose in life to weed 4215 posts on 281 pages (by my settings).

If there's still a subject you've left undiscussed, start another thread. And stick to it.

I shall sit back and enjoy my Sekrit Knowledge. There have to be some advantages to being a mod.

Like I said, some advantages.

And now I'm closing this one, too.
