So someone mentioned chess in a thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=572391) and I went off on an offtopic tangent. Would it be too much to separate the chess posts off into a new topic?

Yes, it would be too much. NationStates is not a chess tournament.
If you can start a thread that would be a reasonable, actual, debatable topic that is connected with those posts, then you can come back here with a link to it and I will merge the posts involved.
But I will not be midwife to a thread that would begin thus:
