US Election sticky

As someone who wanted the sticky, I'm going to hold my hands up and say I think I got it wrong. I don't think it's working, as it's preventing proper discussion about one of the biggest news stories of today. Take me as an example - if there were separate threads I'd probably stick my head in them every now and again, but, as it is, I've barely said a word on the topic.

Perhaps we could try opening the floodgates again, with the strict caveat that new threads that simply repeat what another one is already talking about will be locked? I know that this will mean more work for you, but new news is the fuel that NSG runs on, and we're currently making it harder to come by than oil. [/Crappy analogy]

Sounds good to me. That way the thing doesn't become a horrible mish-mash and insult fight accessible only to people who've been arguing for 30 pages solid.

i agree.

having the one sticky that is clogged up with private fights between personalities keeps new people from jumping into it and leaves new topics surrounded by a sea of crap posts.

news items that would be a magnet for debate are not posted at all or are lost in the mega thread--look at how there are no more posts about the jibjab campaigning video since it was stuffed into the mega thread.

i know we wanted to strike a balance so that the US elections wouldnt take over the whole forum but there is no balance here. you may as well make a rule that we cant talk about the elections.

One more vote in support of the idea of allowing separate threads on the US election.

Like others, I have not contributed to the US election sticky, mostly due to my interest being limited to some particular aspects (not being a US citizen and all) .

If the subjects were separated I would be more inclined to enter the debates.

I haven't been this isolated from US politics since I joined NSG.

I thought I'd like it.

I don't.

I agree - there's enough stifling of debate on NSG as it is. Remove the sticky and allow multiple different threads on the election.

I'm agreeing. I think the sticky-ness served a purpose earlier. I know a months ago (ish) I had stuff to talk about that was near enough on topic, certainly not worth an entirely new thread, but there was some conflict about whether I was hijacking the sticky. In the primary rush, it made sense to stay sticky... now it just makes an uncomfortable balance between logjammed fast-days, and is-it-hijack-y slow news days.

One of the few threads I participate in - I agree with everyone else here too.

Ok. I've destickied the sticky so that you can start fresh.

Now don't go TOO crazy, friends.

Dang me, Kat, can't I have any fun? Without the thought of The Thread to get me out of bed in the morning, what am I gonna do with myself?

At least let a few folk go nuts so I can look forward to a bit of troll-banning to keep me awake. Mwahahaaaah!

So, anyway, I've renamed the thread US Election Miscellaneous. I'll keep on pruning it when it gets too long. Check out the first post if you want a link to where all the previous vitally important prunings have gone.

No worries, Ard -- it looks like people are sticking to that monstrosity despite the pleas for new threads, so far.

Wait, look, there (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=560823) on the horizon ... and there (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=560812) ... you have built it, and they will come!

how are you mods going to keep your reputation as arbitrary power mongers if you keep bowing to the will of the people like this?

Like this: You're banned. For a-a-a-ges. I'll sort out the time and think up a reason later. :)

See? Easy.

We're not necessarily adversarial, you know.

I mean...

WHAT'S ALL THIS THEN!?!
