I made the mistake of enabling sigs for a short while, and well this is what I saw within less than five minutes of casual forum browsing. I count more than 8 lines in each of those huge sigs, and what seems to be a common culprit for huge and obtrusive sigs (even those that don't go above 8 lines) are quote boxes.

I really don't see why they're still allowed in sigs. Even when they don't push the sig above the 8 lines rule, they always make the sig much, much bigger and more obtrusive than a non-quote box quote does and when a poster posts several times in a thread, they riddle the thread with boxes, making it virtually unreadable. Example:

Random quote
Compared with:

Random user: Random linked quote. (http://www.linktorandompost.com)

Or even with the more tasteful and considerate smaller text:

Random user: Random linked quote. (http://www.linktorandompost.com)

So, well, even if the mods still feel that quote boxes, useless and unnecessarily space-demanding as they are, are still OK, this will hopefully make people realise that it really is douchy to use them anyway when compared to a quote without a box, and ironically contraproductive since it pushes people to having to turn sigs off to be able to read the forums.

Hey! I got mentioned! I love it when that happens!

Option 1: turn off sigs.
Option 2: Limit is 9 lines, not 8, I believe.
Option 3: Make a bigger sig bigger than other people's so you look cooler than them. Bigger sigs means you're cool.

Ok, so the second one isn't really an option. It's optiony, I think. Optional? Optionally?

1) is an option. 2) is incorrect - the limit is 8 lines. 3) is juvenile and idiotic.

The limit is neither optional nor option-y, it is pretty much mandatory. Signatures trimmed where applicable.

Please remember that a single quote box occupies five lines of space.

1. Point for me!
2. Duly noted. Could have sworn it said 9 somewhere...
3. I believe that is the point.

Also, I meant that what I said was optiony. It was like an option, but not really an option in that it was mandatory.

I've turned sigs off long ago, but I agree that this is very annoying. They're part of the information in a post, and people frequently say "About your signature" or "See below" - so turning them off has drawbacks. I'd like to turn them on, but only if some people didn't abuse them.

If it were up to debate, I'd in fact vote for a limit of 6 lines rather than 8, or banning quote boxes entirely.
