Question re US primary threads...

Are all discussions of the US primaries going to be sentenced to be Borgishly assimilated into that nasty humongous Obama, Obama, Obama thread where any new discussion will be run over by the 5 or 6 posters who are keeping it going?

I do not like the current trend that suggest this is the case...

I suppose it goes something along the lines of that there only really need be one thread on the primaries and that others are given a decent merging instead of being locked or deleted. But I could be wrong.

Can I have a mod opinion here?

"Mega-threads", in my experience here, tend to be 5-6 posters bickering over a long dead topic from thye first page and nothing more, and thus unopen to new posts.

This is a mean thing to do to a Trekkie, Diastallia -- I don' wanna be the Borg!:(

However, since I'm the one who's been doing the assimilating, I'd better come clean: resistance IS (currently) futile.

The mega-thread is an ad hoc reaction to a General menu that was getting cluttered with threads that to outsiders are just -- gah! More US election stuff to scroll past!

The basis, so far, has been:

1. If it was election-related and short, it's been merged to the mega-thread.
2. If it was election-related and already long when noticed, it's been locked.

It's currently my intention to go on this way until the two major parties have their candidates, then lock the mega-thread.

Hack's already said that the mods will set something up when necessary, so this is just an interim solution to cutting the clutter.

If you're interested enough, you'll plough into the mega-thread daily and it won't be just the usual suspects posting.

It's not set in stone, but give it a go and come back if it's not working.

Err... was that directed to me, or is there a poster with a similar name? :p

Yeah? Too late. ;)

Well dang. I hate mega-threads.

Sorry, but no thanks. :(
Anywho, I was thinking earlier today that there's not really much of anything more to be said on the topic here and avoiding that mess will help keep me out of trouble here, so it's cool.

In all honesty the 'usual suspects' thing doesn't get better by having 8 different threads on the same subject. It just means that your '5 or 6' regular posters are spread out over 7-8 threads having the same argument, polluting up the front page. New topics can be introduced and they have the same life expentency a new thread would, except now instead of a weak topic being hijacked back into the same argument those '5 or 6' are having, only now in separate threads. There are plenty of tools you can use to skip over the same back and forth, and for FSMs sake new takes on the subject are more than welcome as a distraction from the stalemated back and forth, the vanity of it being 'your own thread' is unnecessary.

Can you really argue that when the threads were separate they were really separate discussion and not just several rings in the same circus?
