Flamebaiting

KOL has been fairly regularly flamebaiting lately and was warned of it in regards to Fass in the thread about European portions.

He continues to bait and this time he got Neesika to bite. It's a bit tiresome.

Checking back, a lot of KoL's posts are strongly worded, but within the line. However, the post you quote is beyond it. Warned (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13500166&postcount=80).

I saw your response and I agree. Thank you.

I'm going to revive this thread even though it's a seperate instance. I've seen KoL doing this a lot. I know it's a lot to look through, but he tends to rest on namecalling and direct attacks rather than debate. Sometimes it's people not on this site, so he gets away with it, but calling CH a wormy troll is too much.

As you've said he tends to skate the line. But considering how often he also crosses it, shouldn't he be encouraged to steer well clear of the line?

Lengthily addressed (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13514909&postcount=1615). Obligatory plea attached.

Thanks. And thanks for deleting my double post. My connection went down just as I was posting, so I didn't see it till this morning.

I agree with everything you said save one thing. It's pretty standard debate to show a similar TYPE of argument in order to demonstrate why someone is making an incorrect statement about the nature of examining an argument. He's not comparing CH's statements to statements about pancakes, but to statements about the future that can obviously be examined, in order to demonstrate that future statements are not above reproach as CH has claimed. CH in claiming this is trying to avoid debating. What CTOAN is doing is the opposite. He's showing why it's open for debate and why CH is expected to support his claims with reasons. It should be encouraged.

If, for my sins, I were cast back to the unfortunate stage of my life in which I had to adjudicate high-school debates, I would willingly give Ctoan points for the way he employs this and other well-known tactics so adroitly.

However, what I was trying to do with those quotes was highlight why I feel that you are both using ICBMs against another poster when you could simply employ a pin.

I am concerned that perceptions of such pursuit being commonplace may make the atmosphere of the thread hostile to opposing ideas. I don't want new posters discouraged from entering the topic.

Alright, I'll give you that. I've got a bit of a habit of not knowing when I'm bullying a bit. It's not surprising to me that I wouldn't notice it in CTOAN.

In fairness, I have defended CH several times in the thread and so has CTOAN so we don't totally suck. We regard this much more lightly than I think it appears, as does CH. We've known CH a long time and vice versa. I doubt anyone will get upset. HOWEVER, I can see how it might appear, so I'll try to more cognizant. I can't promise about CTOAN, though. He's kind of a penis. (Will a smiley make that less of a flame? :D )

I would hope that I have at least a small reputation of taking my knuckle-raps when they're deserved, and I will agree that the 'shoving the fingers in your ears until you touch brain' pushed the line (I wasn't implying that he was 'touched' but expressing frustration at his willingness to avoid any sort of honest debate).

The two quotes, though, I don't neccisarly feel that bad about. While satirical Pancake Rain Tuesday (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13513942&postcount=1579), as Jocabia pointed out, was demonstrating a flaw in reasoning-and in order to do that I had to use a ridiculous situation (and, at the time I really wanted some pancakes), and he had characterized us as chasing him around posting research willy nilly. The tone of the debate on both sides has had a sarcastic bent to it, he's uses a kind of 'neener neener' approach and I've used a bit of a satirical bent. I honestly feel that I was addressing his argument not him. I don't think I was inciting him to flame me.

Regardless, I'm not going to stomp my foot and insist I'm right in some sort of pointless display, and I use any time you pop in there as a reminder to keep a check on things. I'm not so married to being 'right' here that I want a forced vacation, I just wanted to defend myself on this for a second.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm totally taking those points and using them for cash and prizes. I'm getting the washer and dryer and the tickets to Aruba.

Orright, your reputations remain as unsullied as the robes of the High Priestess of Ardrigh (whose backstory I'll have to invent). Let's try a rewrite:

(hypothetical) New Poster: The park looks fun but I don't wanna play there because the big kids yell and push each other alla time!

Me: They're okay when you get to know them. You guys, keep it down to a dull roar, willyer? An' give CH there a chance to get his breath back. Play nicer, m'kay?

(cue fadeout)

(And you don't get the washer and the dryer and the tickets. You get House points toward the Mrs Councillor Mildred Flannigan Memorial Cup for Upper School Debating. So ner.)
