Misogynist thread

Far be it for me to try and pretend that General is not home to all sorts of social delinquents and loonies, but do we really need a thread whose purpose is to invent and defend situations where violence against women is considered morally justified?

Whether light-hearted or not (and some of the more disturbing comments made suggest the latter) this thread is trivialising rape and is totally insensitive and crude. I suggest it’s nothing more than an exercise in juvenile male stupidity at best and hateful fantasy at worst. This kind of disgusting misogyny might be common enough in the real world, but that doesn’t mean our moderators have to permit it on the forums.

Given that the rules state that the forums allow all opinions to be stated so long as they do not directly break the rules and the fact that this thread has been going for some time now tells me that this request will be denied.

Besides, it IS an interesting topic of discussion, regardless of one's personal opinions.

How interesting. You think that a thread asking if rape can be justified is inappropriate because it's based on inventing and defending situations of violence against women and only women? Is it ok in your book if it was about men though? The topic of the thread is only "is rape every justified" It says nothing about women, just rape in general. Do you think men don't get raped? Or do the men who get raped not concern you?

How very misandristic of you.

It's not misogynist, it's not misandrist and it's not even misanthropic. Rape happens, to all genders and to most species a human can subdue.

As to the thread itself, there's a detailed Max quote somewhere in which he points out that one nutty post, followed by 20 actual arguments that expose/explode the nuttiness, are what these forums are supposed to be about.

Not that the thread itself is nutty. It's a topic. Most times that someone has come up with a hypothetical situation in which rape might be morally justified, eventually someone else has come up with a "no, because ...". Sure, there's some adolescent silliness, because some silly adolescents post, but it's not a flamefest, it hasn't deteriorated into idiocy, and it's not trolling..

So quote some rule-breaking and we'll jump on the rule-breakers, but the thread, in and of itself, isn't.

IMHO, violence against women is only justified if:

1. they initiated a physical attack

and

2. avoiding or leaving aren't options.

This is my view on violence in any other context also.

<snip>argument referring to thread's content<snip>

Fine, but that argument belongs in General, in the thread. This is a discussion about the thread -- whether it's a legit topic or not.
