If I were to host an NS Risk game would it be alright to do it in "General", or should it be elsewhere?

most likely it goes in II, be sure to TG as many generalites as possible to get more players. ;)

Isn't that what II is all about?

II is mainly about nations ICly interacting with each other whether it be in hostile or peaceful ways.

I don't know enough about it to answer, The Parkus Empire. Could you please expand on it a bit so those mods who are more in touch than I am can understand what you're asking?

Like, what've you got in mind? Playing it the way others play sport -- using an offsite calculator to find out what the action is, then RPing it here? Or are you talking about using the whole armies/countries caboodle onsite? Can it be done using NS nations? Or are you just calling for interested players, or what?

(If these are the sort of questions only an idiot could possibly ask, don't bother mentioning that, I'll take it as read.:p)

Bear in mind that NS and Jolt are both trying to keep players and aren't likely to welcome competition.

You know, there are plenty of good free risk websites. e.g.:
Modedit 2:conquerclub (www.conquerclub.com) and denizengames (www.denizengames.com). See final post.
Both great sites. There is more than just the origional Risk map, too. By free, I mean you can play up to four games at a time. If you want to play any more at a time or real time games or such, then you have to pay money. But, I suppose if people want to tie in their RPing to a game of Risk...

Just something to consider.

Uh ... if what you're asking is, "May I use Max Barry's website to direct people to a website that competes with his?", I do know the answer, and the answer is NO.

I think he's asking if he can just make a thread or something called "RISK" and play it like the board game in that thread...

But that's just me.

should it be elsewhere?

The Risk Forums (http://www.usda.gov/oce/risk_assessment/forums.htm).

Seriously, there's not really a place for non-NS board games here. If you want to develop and play a NS variant, that might work. It's still iffy, though.

No problem. Basically I have this in mind: every participant sets up a Risk board at home. I am the non-participating host (in other words I roll the dice, and deal the territory cards). Players detail their moves via posts. I then take the proper actions for invasions and such, and give them the results.

Very much like "play by e-mail". I just thought it would be fun to have it done on NS.

So it wouldn't really have RP'ing in it (maybe sometime in the future, but for now just play) and it wouldn't use any foreign sites; just NS and the players' boards.

No, no, of course not.

<snip> If you want to develop and play a NS variant, that might work. It's still iffy, though.

What Fris said. Here's why I'd see it as iffy: if you put it in General, it's open to comment from all and sounds like the sort of thing that'd end up generating complaints about spam or being likely to attract trolls. In either of the RP forums, it might manage to sink into the oceans of material, and if you closed it to all but participants you'd be safe from idiocy, but it wouldn't be RPing, so any complaint against it on that ground would have to be upheld. And it's obviously not something for any of the practical-queries forums.

People have RPd playing a few moves of backgammon and chess in the Strangers' Bar, but I don't think anyone ever played a game right through. Other people tend to RP interruptions.

Seems to me that if you don't want to RP it, you'd be better off hosting it on a new free offsite, or maybe an existing regional one, if members agreed.

Speaking from personal experience with the Generalite Mafia, it might be better to move it off line and get the interested parties who are already on board to sig it, and spread the word.

We went from a meager 10 members in May to something like 70 registered members (though many are now inactive), so its not as if your site would die from inactivity.

C'est la vie. Thanks for the warning, I'll try to find a regional board to post it upon.

Though I have to point out that what Deus does not mention is that our website stays alive more due to the social conversation than the Mafia games.

The social conversation which is focused on why the mods suck.

Um, pretend I didn't say that out loud.

This social conversation is getting anti-social. Let's stop.

Before I close the thread, TPE, I was being over-cautious editing Legumbria's links before. They were

conquerclub (www.conquerclub.com) and

denizengames (www.denizengames.com).
