Why, when a nation is deleted, is there not an 'invalid link' page as opposed to being directed to my own nation because IT FREAKS ME OUT!

Because the default, if you're logged in, is to redirect you to the nation you're logged in as. If you're not logged in, it directs you to the main page. And of course if it can't find the nation it resets to the default.
That, or it's there to remind you of the inevitable cold hand of mortality, and that you should ring your mother more often. :D
