Someone needs a reminder about basic forum etiquette...

OcceanDrive2 is participating in that classic sport known as quoting people, then editing what they said to change the meaning.

Case One, Non Aligned States

Case Two, Andaluciae

My old friend needs a reminder of the rules, nothing more. I doubt any real punishment is deserved on this case.

I'm confused... Are you reporting yourself?

No, Andaluciae is giving examples of the original posts, followed by OceanDrive2's versions of them, which he has edited -- possibly for brevity, but I agree, they do produce different meanings. I'll post in the thread to that effect. EDIT: Done. (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13217170&postcount=89)

No. he's reporting OceanDrive2. Who should probably know better than this.

Sure thing, I'll threaten him with a suspension of his account with my mod powers.

Oh wait.

What do you want us to do? PM a mod or something.

EDIT: Hahahaha, oh wow. I'm sorry, I misread this entirely and thought it was in 'General'.
Leaving post intact for laughs.

Endis, there was an outbreak of some obviously malicious post-altering a while back, and people who do it get jumped on with hob-nailed boots. That's why Andaluciae thought it worth mentioning here, before it got to that stage.

...yes...I'm aware of that. His post was quite clear. Your point?

OMG, classic soap opera -- I thought that you thought that he thought that they said that he said...

Endis, I took your post to mean (aside from its obviously joking intent) that you were wondering why Andaluciae was getting uptight about an apparently minor problem. So I explained that it wasn't all that minor, or rather, hadn't been in the past.

I was trying to be helpful by making things clear to a new poster, basing my assumption on your low post-count. Which, as I remind others frequently, doesn't mean a thing, and you could well be a veteran of many a General debate.

I am now going away to have a cup of tea and a biscuit. Happy trails, or something.

I have edited the post in question, using Andaluciae original word, without my clarification.. and wrote my clarification outside the quote tags (on my own post)
Not that I think it really makes a difference. (my point has not changed.)

But since a mod has been called into action...
I will align my posting.. with the mod concerns. (because its the right thing to do)

Thank you for both the just decision, Ardchoille. I would much rather not see those old problems resurrected.

Ardchoille, it looks to me like while the posts were indeed editted, they weren't actually changed so much as subject to text omission, a common practice on NSG.

I looked carefully and it seems that the post subject to actual change rather than simple text omission is that of NAS. It looks like one letter was added, and it was "I".

I realise there is a concern but if we're not allowed to omit text if a post in long in order to reply to a certain section, where does it leave us? I ask because this ruling was on just that if one does closely check Andaluciae's posts in question.

Kryozerkia, I think you may be looking at the revised versions that OceanDrive re-edited.

In the originals, Andaluciae made a reference to "common law systems around the world", and OD2's paraphrase of it in his reply post made it clear that he'd taken this to mean "law systems that are common around the world" rather than "Common Law systems (jursidictions)", which are a different kettle of lawyers, being largely in former British colonies. Thus, he'd changed the meaning by paraphrasing.

Non Aligned States referred to the criminal who calls a hit getting a shorter sentence than the criminal who performs it, but OD2's paraphrase had "the same sentence".

There was no evidence of his doing so maliciously, but, nonetheless, they were paraphrases that changed the meaning of the original posts. That's why I asked him not to do it, and that's why he edited them.

It's certainly necessary sometimes to omit some text; the UN forum, for one, would disappear down a word hole if posters had to read everything twice.

The point was that you can omit text for length or irrelevance, but you mustn't, in doing so, change the meaning of the original.
