Dodgy user name.

The very first time I saw it, I found "Dumfook" a pretty dodgy name.

A look at Dumfook's posting career so far makes it pretty obvious it's not a Urdu word for butter or any such ...

Obviously it doesn't offend me personally, I guess it comes down to the rationale for avoiding expletives in user names, thread titles etc. "Fook" probably wouldn't trigger net filters in schools, but it's pretty obvious even to a kid what it means.

Oh, and I googled the word, too ...

OK, since no one is interested in that ... how about Fudk ... a huge, socially progressive nation whose motto is "fudk you" ...?

Am I being a bit whiney here? Am I perhaps being a bit swayed by aesthetics? Is this never going to be an issue unless the posters in question start a thread? Never an issue at all?

Did you try reading the "read before posting" sticky in this forum?

Yes. No. No. No.

You're reaching to try and find something offensive. You'll pull a muscle that way.

Sir. You succeeded in getting my nation Dumfook deleted...I don't know how I broke the rules and I don't understand what I've done wrong, but the mods deleted my beloved nation anyway.
I don't see how you come to the conclusion that my name means something offensive after looking at my "posting career".

To the Mods:
I suspect Nobel Hobos means something quite offensive, even a child can see what he *really* mean. And just try saying it out loud (quietly though, you don't want anyone to hear you say *that* word, do you?) and notice how strange your mouth feels when you say it!

Sincerely,

John T. Dumfook. esq.

Can I have my nation "Dumfook" back? I don't know why it was deleted, but I'd like it back please.

Hmm?

Could it be your choice of name?

Your new choice is probably not going to help your cause.

Very witty. Don't spam moderation.

My questions were quite sincere. I've wred the stickies (yes, perhaps I should have posted in Getting Help, if that's what you meant Crazy Girl) and I understand that actual swear-words are not permitted in user-names because the user names can appear on the front page.

I'm curious, if a mod would like to tell us, whether the main concern about swear-words being easily visible is

Kids using NS in school can see the words, it gets back to the parents
The words trouble school porn-filters, making having NS too much hassle

... or something else.

And mr. Dumfook, if Fookmoo really is Dumfook: if your nation was deleted for having a foul name, tough. You may be entitled to an explanation from a mod, or not, and that's entirely up to the mods.

I mentioned that I'd looked at your short posting history. I invite others to do so too, and then decide whether it's a coincidence your name sounds like something else.

"Fook" isn't a swear-word. It's the "dum" which makes it sound like one. So you'll probably be fine as Fookmoo.

This wasn't personal, I swear. I didn't bring this up because I hate you or your posts so far. I'm entirely indifferent to both.

Hmmm... so it would sound something like "dumb folk". I don't see how this is offensive. :p Especially when you consider the "L" has a silent element in the word.

You still haven't told me how my "short posting history" indicates that my name is something dirty. Please provide examples.
Perhaps this "filth" which you seem so obsessed with is entirely in your head.

I still think Nobel Hobos is very dirty (so dirty in fact, that I won't repeat the actual meaning here). And a look at your posting history seems to verify that claim.
I'm not pointing this out because I hate you or your posts so far. It is more due to the fact that I'm in horrified to see such a suggestive name on display, and being a whining anal-retentive person by nature, I felt compelled say something.

Sincerely,

John T. Dumfook. esq.

Ps: One does not wred posts.

If the game mods tell you that the name is offensive, then thats how it goes.

"fook" is slang for another word that is against site rules. Just give it up already and make a nation name that isn't offensive.

Noone told me that it was...And my nation got deleted without any explanation.

Yeah, we told you. Ignorance of site rules is not, and never has been, and excuse.

What can't I post?

Any content that is:

* obscene
* illegal
* threatening
* malicious
* defamatory
* spam

This applies to your nation's name, motto, and other customizable fields, any messages you write, images you post, or any other content you upload or link to NationStates. If you do, your nation will be deleted.

...And my nation got deleted without any explanation.
Since nation names can't be changed (for technical reasons I won't go into here), there seems little point in an explanation or request that you change it. Per the FAQ, which reflects the Terms and Conditions you agreed to when you created your nation (remember that checkbox? Go back and look), we don't need to notify you in any case.

The decision stands ... and I'm still undecided on your current nation. If we decide it also breaks site rules, it'll disappear just as suddenly.
