Because both closed threads were flamebait.
Not arguing, but can you explain how they are flamebait?

Methinks you need to bring your flamebait detector in to get fixed because it ain't workin' right no more.
Aside from the obvious move of labelling atheists as both militant and ignorant, I don't possibly see how it could be a flamebait. You opened a Pandora's Box and the done of the OP expects that atheists will sit back while the more religious and god-fearing types write negative comments about us.
No, the atheists are going to respond and the mod fire squad was simply preventing a forum fire by pre-emptively closing it before it got out of hand. Frankly, that's a good thing because if it wasn't locked, there'd be people like me telling the god-fearing sort like you that your comments are unwarranted and then we'd have a break down of civility and someone's feelings would be hurt...

I suppose mein thread was closed for the same reason?
given this:
Because both closed threads were flamebait.
it would appear so.
not a mod.

Aside from the obvious move of labelling atheists as both militant and ignorant
I don't think the intent was to label ALL atheists as militant and ignorant; rather, the OP was designed to share encounters with those atheists who happen to be that way.
So, while it may have had the effect of providing a forum for flaming, I don't think it was necessarily flamebait itself.
That said, props to the mods for closing the thread just as the flames started to surface. It's a pity the real conversation had to be stopped short.
