Stepping Over the Line

The following post, in my opinion, crossed the line.

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12910250&postcount=13

In general, this part: "So, you have...failed at life. You may now end your life. Doing so will only benefit the world as needed resources shall no longer be wasted. Have a great day." It is very malicious and hurtful. I agree that my observation may have been provocative, but nothing to warrant such a hateful response.

Edit: also, if you feel that the connection I drew between less education and more liberalism was spurious, this post demonstrates similar logic, only without any semblance of proof and an ad hominem jab thrown in.

"Less education traditionally equates to conservatism amadán."

Probably worth adding your own post here, F&G, since it's what sparked the unpleasantness.

No proof provided, just a snide jab at liberalism.

EDIT: Looking again, it's also an off-topic jab.

Well, I wouldn't say no proof. Assuming that education impacts political views and knowing that those who receive a better education tend to be more conservative (from the data provided), the conclusion is logical and not without basis.

From the data provided, which is… no data?
Maybe Seangoli's comment was over the line, but we both know you were deliberately trying to provoke almost everyone on the thread. If you can't handle a little insult, then don't bait people into giving them.

I don't really mind it if people call me an idiot or a troll; people have done so amply and I haven't reported it to moderation. Even Chesser Scotia's signature is fine with me. But Seangoli's comment crossed the line. I hope that this forum does not condone the attitude of wishing that other posters were dead.

FaG, to be quite honest, you have a point. One good thing about this forum is that we can get torn into idiots like yourself as freely as we wish, simply because you can get equally torn into idiots like me. That's what a forum is for. Wishing someone was dead, as understandable as I am sure it could be in some situations, does seem a bit needless.
The other points do stand however, you revel in offending people and "challenging" their belief structure in ways that a great many people would regard as unacceptable. That is allowed to continue in the spirit of debate and free speech. Which is fine. However, please understand why when you come to the moderators complaining about unfair treatment, people find it very difficult to take you seriously.
This is in no way an antagonistic post, I am making the point seriously.

Oh come now.

I don't actually wish you were dead. It was sarcasm. Albeit extreme sarcasm, but sarcasm no less.

However, the mods will ultimately decide this, one way or the other, and I shall more than gladly agree with any decision they make.

Is it just me, or does it seem like FAG's original post (here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=12910221#post12910221)) is a little more on the flamebait side than usual, as it seems to be calling out more directly that all liberals are uneducated rather directly, other than when he simply implies it.

I tried not to make this post too General-y, hope that cuts it.

I'll deal with this in a little bit. And I'll also deal with the people who don't know the difference between General and Moderation. I'm sick of the bleed over.

The following post, in my opinion, crossed the line.I'll get to your original complaint once I'm done with this thread.

Probably worth adding your own post here, F&G, since it's what sparked the unpleasantness. As I often do on complaints such as this, I reviewed the whole thread. FreedomAndGlory's post was indeed hostile towards the liberal viewpoint, but no more hostile than many liberal posters are towards the conservative viewpoint. And while FreedomAndGlory frequently trolls, that is not prima facie evidence that every post he makes is trolling or attempted trolling.

Again, just because a person has an opposing viewpoint, it doesn't mean that person is trolling.

No proof provided, just a snide jab at liberalism. The original post asked: "Now why do you suppose that is?" This was not a request for research papers, but a request for opinions. FreedomAndGlory gave his opinion. He may have drifted slightly from the original intent, but if we started cracking down on topic drift, General would be a very desolate place, full of locked threads with two posts.

Maybe Seangoli's comment was over the line, but we both know you were deliberately trying to provoke almost everyone on the thread. If you can't handle a little insult, then don't bait people into giving them."He needed killin'" may be a legal defense in Texas, but it doesn't fly here.

However, please understand why when you come to the moderators complaining about unfair treatment, people find it very difficult to take you seriously.Luckily, we're actually willing to treat serious complaints seriously.

I don't actually wish you were dead. It was sarcasm. Albeit extreme sarcasm, but sarcasm no less."You're a fucking idiot who should be shot! :p"

Much like a colon and the letter 'p' don't make my comment acceptable, claiming "sarcasm" (especially in a tone-of-voiceless medium) doesn't make your post acceptable.

Now then. The results of this.

New Tacoma: 3 Day Forumban: Flaming in Moderation.

Chesser Scotia: 1 Day Forumban: Moderation is not General.

FreedomAndGlory: 1 Day Forumban: Moderation is not General.

Seangoli: 1 Week Forumban: Extreme flaming. This was very close to a death threat, which carries an instant-delete punishment. Do not do this again, sarcasm or no.

I'm sick of people treating this forum like it's the General forum, especially in cases like this. Knock it off.

is this going to be a new ruling and addition to the OSRS? just curious.

It's always been a stupid idea to bring petty arguments into General. I'd say it would get filed under common sense.

is this going to be a new ruling and addition to the OSRS? just curious.A new ruling? What's new about "don't bring General arguments into Moderation"?

It's spam, and it was handled as such. I'm sick of people being unable to control themselves, so the hope is that handing out short forumbans will get people to knock it off.

ok... sorry, I thought it was new since this is the first time I've heard of bans being handed out for.. Generalizing in the Mod forum. ;)

I believe it is the first time it's happened. Still, since it's spam, it's well within our existing SOP to issue forumbans.
