I ask the mighty Mods for a Favor.

*Bows in humility*

Oh great mods. I've noticed (and so have several others) that the general attitude in... well General is getting a tad strained. the personal attacks, the claims of Flaming and flamebaiting, the trolling... the apparent and obvious rise of animosity between posters is getting... well noticeable.

I would like to ask for a boon. an experiment so to speak. an NSG Offical Word Game thread. something along the lines of what the Paradise Beach Club was, an offical thread that was an exception to the rule.

If left to only house serious debate/discussion threads, I feel it will polerize the posters to the point where the mentality will degrade to a "Either you're with us or not." A mentallity that would definately result in more bans, deats and DOS's being handed out. I want to establish a thread where people can have fun, excercise their mind, and forget perhaps (I hope) forget that the other poster argued against abortion in whatever thread and remind them that ultimately, we're all here to have some form of fun.

For evidence of the nitpicking and snipping that been going on, I hope you look at the recent rise of Mod Reports given on this page. Also the rise of suggestions to put people on "ignore". NSG needs a pressure release, and since spam isn't for everyone, I propose an Offical NSG word game thread.

if you want, I'll let you decide on the game. whether it be change a letter, rhyme, or whatever. I think that a non-serious, but thought provoking game thread might help remind everyone that we're all humans here and everything isn't just one side vs another.

I would like to discuss it further with you, to discuss any concerns you may have.

anxiously awaiting response...

You have the NS Pub (or whatever it's called). That will have to suffice. People being unable to control their actions is not sufficient reason to allow spam.

True, and not argued about being able to control oneself. but the NSG pub really isn't something for everyone. Something that also can be considered educational like a word game might help allieviate pressure for people who are not into rp spam.

Uhh...I think it's gonna take more than a word game to relieve the total ranting with-us-or-against-us attitude that seems to be permeating NSG lately.

More than usual, I mean.

More than usual, I mean.

I've actually found the month of June 2007 to be one of the lighter months in terms of moderator intervention in General. Looking back over this forum's thread history for the past month, there have been remarkably few threads that required any kind of careful decision making. Mostly it's been spam locks and thread moves, but very few of the long, drawn-out battles that often characterize these forums. In most cases, the rulings have been the easy ones - clear-cut and obvious.

As for the content in General, I think it mirrors US, British, and world opinion in percentages of people for or against any given issue. The fact that American and British social and political views are more polarized than usual has reflected itself in the forums. I'd call that normal behavior.

Honestly, I've noticed a distinct change. Originally, I thought it was just me, as several users I really liked have kinda moved on...but hearing that others agree and have the same perception as I do must mean something.

In the past, we had places for users to kinda...relax. Not just Paradise Beach or the NS pub (which, at most, I've posted in once or twice). We had threads that wern't necessarily meaningful, and were quite spammy at times (Choose Wisely, the "hottest NSguy/girl" threads), but were allowed. I got the chance to talk to some posters who I otherwise would only fight with. Sure, in the abortion thread, we were tearing each other to proverbial shreads, but in those threads, we were having a good time.

Now, maybe it is that generalites aren't making the same types of threads, maybe it is the "old guard" leaving and the "new guard" that just acts different, or maybe it is that the rules are enforced differently. What I do know is that I don't see an outpouring of general caring that lead to Sandy's memorial thread, or even the playfulness that allowed people to really get to know each other. We, as generalites, have moved farther apart from eachother. Hardly a thread can go by where we don't have a post that just reads "troll" or some sort of flame/flamebait, and, I would argue, much of this arises from the fact that we don't care about each other.

I'm not saying that we should allow general to become a spamfest. The NS pub/paradise beach clubs kinda suck tho, and, while those are permitted, are not something I want to waste my time with. I don't get to know people there because it is really mindless spam of people pretending to be drunk.

Really? Huh. Guess it's just me.

Actually, not really. a carefully crafted word game can help improve vocabularies while being fun.

and considering that this is an "international" forum, it can also include foreign words as well. ;)

I think I actually have an idea for a thread that can lighten the mood. UNO MOMENTO!

What about a sort of Nation States General Jeopardy? Or perhaps a similar type of "game show."

Basically it would have historical, political, philosophical, or theologically oriented questions, and we could perhaps maintain a sort of leaderboard at the OP.

I'm not sure if that counts as a word game, per se, but it's probably spam. But it would be a cool idea where we could discuss politics, history, etc, without gouging each others throats out.

Yeah, but then you'd have players objecting to the questions, objecting to the answers, objecting to the rules.....

Yeah, but then you'd have players objecting to the questions, objecting to the answers, objecting to the rules.....

And a discussion would start up about one of the answers to a question, or a question itself. And it would be NSG as usual until the discussion died down, at which point a new question would go up.

Well, perhaps to settle that we could elect a small board of deciders...or perhaps they can be chosen by the mods...who would make a fair selection of questions, set the rules, and what have you...and we must abide by these or else the mods will stop the game entirely.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing this...after all, that whole Mafia thing was forced to go to an offsite forum, and I'd hate to see this be another off-site forum thing, because it would mean only some NSGers would see it and even fewer would participate, and having it offsite would defeat the whole point.

I really like that too. Being able to sit down and get to know other people is always a nice refreshing change and escape from the war-zone next door. But the people who point out that if we try this it won't work because it won't be immune to the problems plaguing everything else are unfortunately right too.
