not that I like the Phelps clan or anything.......but those comments are over the line.

Yeah...that's REALLY creepy. Like, in the extreme. As in, "you need counseling. NOW." creepy. I didn't even read the second one you linked to, the first one was creepy enough...

Okay, we can't talk about hell now.

Because hell is surely worse than being raped.

Smunk's been riding my ass ever since that first big discussion we had and she started questioning herself and whined and threatened to leave (putting me on people's "shitlist") because of it.

She's got a grudge, and an axe to grind.

because I didn't post this hours ago? right.

I should have left you alone. I didn't. If the mods ban me, so be it.

I was actually heading over here to report Szanth's comments. They are over the line IMO. I don't see how such inflammatory comments could lead to any rational debate.

Looks like that whole thread is a flame war now, and it seems to be spilling over into Moderation on this thread.

I do not see this ending well.

am I right in assuming after 10 hours of no response from the mods, that advocating rape and murder is now acceptable on NSG?

They're probably either A. Busy with that pesky real life thing of theirs. B. Discussing the matter in their super secret Mod Cave. Or C. A little of A. and a little of B.

You might be right in assuming they are either a) still discussing how to handle this particular case or b) haven't had the time to get to it. I swear, people, have some patience. Just because some of you don't seem to have a life and practically live online, going breathlessly from post to post, doesn't mean everyone else does the same.

And for the record, I agree - there shouldn't be a place for those sorts of comments on this site, in my opinion. Expressing your dislike of or disagreement with someone is one thing. Posting that sort of absolute drek is quite another.

EDIT: NERVUN - head, out. :P

Calm down, they haven't responded to ANYTHING on the moderation forums. And if it was, they'd tell us.

Yes, we do have lives outside of NS, like giving our students finals and grading. But onto the thread.

Szanth, for the comments already referenced, has been given a 2 day forum ban. Given your previous warnings, please try to think a little bit harder about the suitability of what you post sometimes.

Smunkeeville, laudable as it may be that you reported the posts, you also continued to post in response, and the language you used was overly personal/insulting towards Szanth at times. Therefore, you are receiving a 24 hour ban. Next time you find yourself believing comments are unacceptable, accept that reporting them here is the limit to what you should do.

If I may ask, what specific posts did Smunkee get banned for? I'm just asking so I can better understand where the line is so I never cross it.

got a question... not knowing their posting history (tho Estratide made mention of Szanth's warnings...) Shouldn't Smunkeeville have recieved an Offical Warning first? or is her posting history... er... just as bad...

I too am curious. the back-and-forth between Szanth and Smunkee seemed within the bounds of the rules. I've seen worse being handled to DK, RO, F&G, and others... yet nothing from the mods who participate within those threads. (yes, I know "if it's not reported, it's not acted upon.")

I love Smunkee, but she posted quite a few that were generally attacks, mild as they were.

It's a lot of attacks. She should have walked away. I suspect she recognizes that now.

seen worse in greater quantity... but shouldn't an Offical warning suffice?

also how does any of those fit the bill of "... overly personal/insulting towards Szanth at times" [from estratides post]. also considering Smunkee's posting history... has she been collecting Offical Warnings?

There is no specific escalation path such as unofficial warnings > Official Warnings > Short Bans > Long Bans > Permanbans > Deletions. It may look that way at times, but we can and do skip steps when we believe it warranted.

Twice today I deleted on first mention. Other times I might have scolded for similar offenses. It depends, as always, on the specific nature of the specific situation, and remains, as always, a judgment call.

Interesting.... however, Now I have a concern.

being that I was told awhile back that the mods look at the poster's history and it plays a part in their considerations... shouldn't some form of escalation of punishment be necessary. I realize there will be exceptions where a permaban or deat would be required instead of a warning or short ban.

I mean, (not knowing what's in each poster's history) this would be a permament mark on a poster's record (somethign else that was also mentioned to me.) Could I or smunkee, ask for another mod to review her posting to see if it warrented a ban or just an Offical Warning?

this is worrying to me since I know my tone does often take on the same tone that smunkee used and I've had such types of posts reflected upon me.

Well... that was an... unpleasant thread. Anyway, Eras was quite right in the level of punishment handed out. Smunkee knew that she was crossing the line and continued to do so. This wasn't an honest mistake or a matter of getting too wrapped up in things, it was hostility and personal attacks despite knowing the proper course of action (report and stay out of the thread).

Smunkee's ban is apparently still in effect, even though it says it's supposed to be lifted yesterday, can a mod unban her, or something?
