Personally, don't you think being a mod would suck? All the people whining to you, having to patrol the forums for bad posts, not being able to play the game anymore because you have to police it...
Personally, that takes all the fun out of NS for me...

Because, I'm sure you'd rather put this thread here, and deal with more spam/trolling/flaming threads on a regular basis.
And then return here and remind yourself why you like being a mod.

All the people whining to you, having to patrol the forums for bad posts, not being able to play the game anymore because you have to police it...Being able to help people with problems... watching the game grow... knowing you're helping to make it a better place for the players... helping shape it's growth as it changes over time...
And I still play the game. Real life is far more restricting than modding when it comes to that.

I think we've been accused of every bias possible. We've been called neo-conservatives, ridiculiberals, nazis, commies, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, crazy pagans, white, black, red, various shades of pink and brown, anti-abortion, anti-life, seriously crazed-up fruit loops, pro-war, anti-war, anti-American, anti-Canadian, anti-European, anti-Australian, terrorist supporters...

In every game and forum that I am a member of, I highly appreciate the hard work, patience and knowledge of moderators. They often get abuse they certainly haven't earned, and people give them a hard time just for doing their (most often) voluntary service to the gaming community.

I consider the mods as similar to RL policemen. They have a difficult, and often thankless job, but they are still human. They eat, sleep, and burp, just like the rest of us.
And they definitely still play the game. I've seen at least two of them regularly in the UN, and see an occasional modly name in the RP forums.
And I second what Araraukar said. :)

I think of them more like bouncers. They want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to have a good time and that we get to do what the place was designed for, a good portion of what they do is done behind the scenes and in such a way that we don't notice it, they take all the crap when something goes down, but no one ever notices that they are the reason crap isn't ALWAYS going down, and when it finally comes to the point where patrons are just unwilling to be cooperative, those patrons find themselves on the sidewalk.
Yep, bouncers, I say. To the whole lot of 'em.
And that fruit loops line is the reason I now have a bowl of cereal. Must not read abuse hurled at the mods after travelling all night.

Don't worry. Me love mods.
I'm not suckin' up. Seriously. I've been in another unmoderated forum, took a leave, and when I returned, it was full of spam, trolls, and flaming. Hardly post there anymore. Them mods prevent NS Forum (or Fora?) from degenerating into that kind of mess. Thank God for mods.

It is? News to me. It'd be news to the raider community, the regional politics community, the General debate community, the General social spam community, the UN resolution-writing community, the NSwiki national history community, the ship design community, and quite a few others.
... Each of whom think their idea of the game is the only way the game should be played, and each of whom is wrong. I'm part of the mod community, which gets to write and enforce the rules of the game. I find that an entirely satisfactory mode of 'play'.

Mods rp all the time, just not all of them. Where have you been playing, boyo? Not only do they rp, I'm in alliances with them - active alliances that have been so for years now. And like Fris said, they're active all over the place in as far as I can tell, every aspect of the game - hence their being able to manage it as they do. Might want to do some research before you up and drop comments on things you don't seem to know much about. ;)

I see Fris & Hack in the UN forum all the time, as players. I've also seen some mods in the RP sections. I can't remember who, and I don't know how active they are there, since I'm not really active in Jolt's RP, but I lurk, and I know I've seen them there.

Do I like it? Ask me in a few months, when the blisters settle down.
So far it's a bit like driving. For years, you watch other people do it. Turn the key and go, right? And then you get to hop in, and you turn the key, and the car won't start. Because you didn't know about the accessories-only setting, or the clutch, or the gears, and why are the windscreen wipers flapping when I thought I was using the indicator?
I do like driving, though.
Since you've asked a question, I get to ask one back: When is your UN delegation gonna pay that months-overdue Strangers' Bar tab, eh?
EIDT: I forgot:

Do I enjoy it? It varies. Sometimes I have a warm fuzzy grow, as if I'd helped a kitten across the road. Sometimes I have a dark and malicious glee, much like a policeman must feel when he Defeats Evil. Sometimes I feel an impotent rage against the stupidity of Humanity, which I imagine Jesus feels all the time (or would, except He is too mellow). Sometimes all at once!
And what we didn't tell Ardchoille is that the masochism thingy is just so nobody feels left out on Leather Thursdays. This is why honesty is important, folks!

I like it well enough, but I have to take breaks. My last one was pretty long (and I thought it would be permanent at first) but I came back around like I always do.
I was modded in like April or May of 2003 (I was the first one), so the enormous majority of my time on NS has been spent as a moderator and as a result it's kind of hard for me to look at NS through a player's lens anymore. Some of the newer mods have an advantage over me in this area, since they know more about what it feels like to be a regular player here than I do.
It's really not that bad most of the time, but I'm always wary of people who have an apparent eagerness to be a moderator. It can definately be a lot of work, so anyone who would campaign for it is either power hungry or masochistic. Possibly both.
It can definately be a lot of work, so anyone who would campaign for it is either power hungry or masochistic. Possibly both.
I think that's why it's nice to say thank you once in a while. However, I would point out that there is the overwhelming advantage of being a part of making this the place it is. You've been here since the beginning. You've got to see it evolve thus far. You've gotten a say. You've gotten to help all of us have more fun and kept it thriving. That's gotta feel good.

I find gloves help until you build up some callouses. Though if we listen to DLN there is a mod pillow that Ard could use. Somehow the mod pillow of doom isn't quite as threatening though. Unless it's made of feathers. Cuz I'm really ticklish.
Personally, I think she should try a new approach. Something different from other mods. I know if I was all angry and flamey, I would definitely be encouraged to mend my ways by a back rub. Maybe a piece of candy. Some random flattery.
