Massive font sizes in signatures

It's really starting to get out of hand and I'm having to turn sigs off because so many people have stupid crap in all caps in font size 50.

That's just out of two threads I've seen this morning. It's just post after post of huge fonts and it's incredibly obnoxious.

There was a thread on this already, that I can't find, but as far as I remember it was ruled that they were not illegal.

I would, however, also ask that the decision is reconsidered. There are a lot more than the ones Khadgar posted, and they are just as distracting as those over 8 lines.

And look what I found on my searches:

Kat in her pre-Moddy days. It made me smile for some reason. :)

So, then what's the problem?

It's a flagrant rules violation?

Signature Spam: Forum signatures give you space to include a few carefully selected links or quotes. Sigs are attached to every post, and must therefore conform to clutter-reducing rules. Maximum size should never exceed eight lines, including blank lines and quote lines. (A short quote takes up 5 lines - "quote", attribution line, two lines for the box, and one line for the quote). Large font sizes should be avoided and may be trimmed without warning. Posting forbidden links is not allowed. Jolt policy prohibits images in signatures as well, so don't try IMG tags.

He is still under the 8 lines limit, and the text isn't obnoxious. If he had 8 lines of that it would be actionable, but as is....

That would explain why I couldn't find the thread: Shazbotdom can't spell. :p

Well I can live with that. Does that mean I can do 8 lines of insanely huge text?

You're going to hate me but I actually like your new sig. At least the big and coloured part.

I'm considering going for 7 lines of huge text, just to get them to reconsider the ruling, however I think that'd be called mod baiting.

I was going to make a thread about the same thing but I figured it would be a waste of time. However, I will throw my weight behind Khadgar on this one because I don't want to have to turn off signatures because of a few thoughtless individuals who think huge fonts in their signatures makes them special. If anything it detracts from their post and makes me want to mock them for no good reason other than their signature is so damn huge I can't read their post.

Plus I can tell where I left off if I left a post by the last signature I saw; I never remember names.

ps - notice mine, nice TINY fonts. In fact, I'm surprised anyone even notices it at all. Isn't it nicer than those icky large ones?

And wrong. It specifically says

The point is that the huge sigs are still less than 8 lines in normal text size. Even two lines in a huge font would presumably go over that.

Like you, I still find them annoying, but I'm assuming we can take the Mods silence in this thread to mean that the first ruling stands.

May I suggest a more specific rule than "8 lines"?

Like, what is the measurement of 8 lines?

I'm assuming that 8 lines refers to eight lines of text in the default text size and font.

Yup.

As far as the rest is concerned...some folks will have annoying signatures, and other folks will copycat them. That's been the case for years.

We aren't going to remove the annoying signatures until we determine that they break the rules. So far we haven't.

And we still have the ignore list to use, as a sort of peer pressure. If you can't see someone's posts, you can't see their sig. If the obnoxious sig people are ignored, maybe they'll change 'em?

Possibly. Or they'll just cut back on their posting because they won't be having debates with others anymore and their signatures won't be showing so often in lot of threads anymore, which has the same effect.

Or you can just change your preferences so that you don't have to see any sigs. Isn't it annoying to read the same line over and over again? This argument can be used as a justification to ignore General entirely though:p
