Questions for television.

Hello. I just finished up a meeting with a couple of producers who are putting together a pilot television program dealing with the online world - in particular, online communities and online gaming. They were very interested in (among other things) Nationstates, and they're rather keen to have me chat with them on-camera about my experiences with NS (and other stuff). I'm happy to help, and I'll be dropping by their studios this weekend. That being said, I wanted to touch base here first, in order to make sure that this is okay to do, and maybe to get some answers to some questions I think I should be asking before flapping my tongue over the airwaves.

Is there anything specific I should mention about Nationstates (rules, policies, etc.)? Is there anything I should avoid discussing? Can I use specific names of posters or regions, or should I seek their permission to do so prior to the interview? I can't actually think of any other questions right now, so I suppose I'm off to an inauspicious start - Hell, I've probably gone and posted this to the wrong forum, too.

Oh well. I've gotta start someplace.

So what I'll do is check back here every now and again to see if there's been any responses. Oh, and just so we keep things on an even keel - I'd appreciate it if the responses to this thread emanate only from those involved with running and/or creating NS - Moderators/Developers/Max Barry himself.

Thanks in advance,

Dobbsy.

...Shall I take the lack of input as a green-light to say anything, then?

... I myself wouldn't mind answering some questions he may have. If he wanted to have some questions answered by other members of this Online community.

you know... post the questions here, weed out the spam and broadcast the serious answers...

The admins have been alerted to this thread; they're just kinda busy with real life right now.

Off the top of my head, I can't imagine that this would be a problem, or that there are any taboo topics. The one thing to keep in mind, and I can't stress this enough, you do not speak for NationStates, the NationStates staff, or Max Barry.

I'm not insinuating that you would do such a thing, but you'll want to be sure the producers are aware of this fact.

Oh, well yes - without question. I wouldn't presume to speak on behalf of the site or the staff or Max for that matter. First and foremost, I wanted to relate my own personal experiences on NS - and the sense of community I've felt since I've been here.

I appreciate your input, and I'll look forward to hearing from anyone else involved with the running of NS on this matter. My apologies if I seemed in any way impatient - I'm not, actually - I'm just feeling the slow-coming onset of butterflies in my stomach (as I'm going to be on-camera in just a few days' time).

I'll just keep checking back to this thread periodically, to see what the general overall concensus is. And thanks again, Hack.

I'm with Hack here, personally. I ain't real worried about what you say so long as it's obvious your opinions about the site aren't official.

Good luck conquering those butterflies. I hope the interview goes well for you.

Thanks, HR. I'm sure it'll go well - I just need to forget about the camera being there, is all. I've been giving it some thought, and I suppose what's always impressed me about NS is that, for the most part, you are what you write.

I wonder whether I should start a discussion thread on General to kick this around a bit in advance of the taping. You know, touch base with others and get their perspectives on NS as an online community. Anyway, for now I gotta get back o my day job.

Thanks again.

Well, the producers wrapped a few hours ago - threw me for a bit of a loop 'cause they decided to film here at my home rther than in the studio, but it all went very well. I made a point of stating that I wasn't connected to Nationstates in any capacity other than as a poster, and if I recall correctly, I believe I dodged a question by referring the curious to the Nationstates FAQ, so no problems there.

They also interviewed my fiancee about her involvement with City of Heroes and World of Warcraft. She took it pretty well, though I could tell it wore on her nerves, so tonight I ordered in pizza and put on some Doctor Who to try winding her down a bit.

But honestly, we talked seperately and together for about three hours, and I'm given to understand they'll probably use about seven minutes on-air, tops, so I have no idea what'll end up in the program - though I will get see a rough-cut that'll go to the network for review sometime next week, apparently.

Thanks for addressing this thread, Hack & HR.
