I had the bright idea to use Warcraft 3 to form the map (and map updates, troop positions, etc) for an RP I'm planning. Would this fall within the realm of legal as far as other games rulings go?

We don't care what tools you use in RP, as long as it doesn't drift into 'image spam'. As long as your thread doesn't consist primarily of a listing of huge screencaps, one after another, describing your movements, I don't see a problem.
